I just bought the DELL XPS 15 9550 (shipped: 2016-04-02). It came in perfect condition. I didn't have any of the issues mentioned in some of the youtube videos and in some of the internet discussion forums. SPEC: Quad Core i7-6700HQ, FHD, 84WHr, 16gig ram, pcie-512 SSD. I use the laptop for software development. Easily last most of a day's work roughly 6.5 to 8 hours depending on what I do. I did not have to reinstall Windows 10. I simply updated all the drivers and Windows Updates. I'm tempted to buy an external battery pack because I usually work 10-12 hours a day. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase.
After 2-3 weeks of usage, I returned the DELL XPS 15 9550 and got a full refund. Despite my best efforts, I could not get used to the cheap keyboard. It's really an awful awful keyboard. As a software developer that needs to type a lot, this laptop is really bad. As such, I bought the Thinkpad X1 Yoga. I've been using the Thinkpad X1 Yoga for 2 months, 60 hours / week. The overall usage experience is much better. The display is slightly less good than the DELL XPS 15 9550 but the keyboard experience is top notch. I have decided to keep the Thinkpad X1 Yoga for good.
MrSoloDev Hallo, Im now looking for this purchase too. So, could you pls tell me your experience of use on this laptop? Im a dentist, my main purpose of using laptop is reading CT conebeam files, which is heavy. Im not sure or confusing that this laptop can lunch well the files.
I just bought one of these in 2022... for $230. How depreciation flies! Thanks to all the cutting edge (for 2015) features that Dell crammed in there, it can be kitted out quite nicely! I gave it 64 GB of DDR4-2666 RAM, a 2 TB NVMe drive that runs at over 3500 MB/s read & write, and a RTX 2070 (eGPU via Thunderbolt 3). The main downside is the Sky Lake CPU. Luckily it hasn't been a bottleneck yet, though.
I've never liked anyone's reviews as much as yours. I like the way you lay out everything about the product, and I like you. Your voice does really well and you speak clearly. :D Sub!
Hi Dave, I was shopping for a laptop for my wife and I was reading some reviews in you tube. Besides this specific review on Dell XPS 15, I like to praise your style and amount of important information you passed on. Keep up this good job. You have a unique way to present product. Continue the good job, you have a bright future. Ishtiaque (from Canada, Montreal).

Brenden Pragasam I really like the razer blade, but the image quality on this 4k panel and the super thin bezels make the xps a very different product offering
This is what I was waiting for since the XPS 13 with the Infinity Display. I loved the idea of the XPS 13, but I wanted more power to make it more useful for proper work. The bigger screen in a more compact form factor is awesome as well. But in the end it's hella expensive here in Australia lol. Great review as always. And that stuff at the end is always impressive :)
@@castle_novelist Late reply, but I’ve had mine for about 5 years now. Biggest downside for me was the battery. I’ve had it replaced by Dell for free once since I got swelling issues and my trackpad was bulging, then it was fine. However, the battery started getting worse after the replacement and I get around 30 mins of battery life when my laptop is on standby, which is bad. Overall, I think there are better options now that are around the same current price point. In hindsight, I wish I would’ve just stuck with a MacBook Pro

The XPS keyboard in my opinion is really nice to use. Yes it has short key travel but that's really not a problem. I personally was expecting the keyboard to be really small being the size of a 14" laptop, with the keys being really close together but they're not. The keyboard is a joy to use and the back-lit keyboard looks stunning! Along side the carbon fibre palm rest, the aluminium shell, the 4K infinity edge screen and the tapered 11-17mm thickness of the laptop. This laptop is sleek and stylish, which in my opinion, you don't find in gamer laptops. I have also not had any driver problems and everything seems to be working as it should. I think when the XPS was first released there were a couple of issues but as far as I am aware, Dell has rectified these problems.

Hi Dave. I bought my 9550 based mostly on your review and I want to say thanks for providing such an honest review. I upgraded the ssd during the build to avoid the slower speed and was not disappointed that the battery does not last as long as I want - partly because I knew what I buying. I have purchased about 10 laptops and this one is the best laptop I have ever owned - including a ridiculous ROG machine I bought last year. So thank you for your review!

I wouldn't get these laptop with the 2160p panel, since it's way too much resolution for a GTX 960M. It's a GPU that can handle 1080p gaming relatively well, but even at 1440p you start getting choppy gameplay, and at 2160p you're talking about 5-15 FPS on the most demanding games. Plus, do you really need 2160p content on a 15" screen? Isn't that a bit overkill? So if you want this laptop, get the 1080p version. Save money, get a longer lasting battery and get a GPU that's appropriate for your native resolution.
Laurent Beardsell Productivity doesn't require you to have a 4K screen. This is a multimedia/gaming laptop. If people want just productivity, they wouldn't get a laptop with a dedicated GPU. Especially not one that can do 1080p gaming.
Bilal Khalid I've played on the GTX 960m before and it was just fine on 1080p. Whether you want to call it a "gaming laptop" or not, I don't give a shit. And you can take your "pity" and shove it up your ass.
+Yuki Kazuto I have a 7559. For $800, it's a nice laptop, but it's certainly not a premium machine like the XPS 15. The XPS 15 is lighter, has a better display, it's not all plastic and is machined alluminum, and if you opt to lose the hard drive the battery is utterly massive.
+Androxean I just ordered the XPS 15 with an i5 Quad Core, 8GB ram, HD display (not 4k), 32gb SSD for windows and 1TB HDD, all for $1100 with a $100 dell coupon code I used.

This is the first vid I've ever watched from you. I'd subbed because of the quality and the breakdown of your vid. I hope the rest have a similar format...
I just returned mine. First I had a cluster of dead pixels on the 4k display so there was a bright star whenever the screen was dark. The sound was absolutely horrible - literally that bad to warrant that wording. A few others noted the same on Reddit.. I had problems with the trackpad - scrolling in anything other than webpages wasn't happening and there was always a delay to scrolling (even though I turned off the 'delay' option), single finger taps failed to register a bunch. Before all that, I had a bunch of problems with my Dell direct order and Dell support was a disaster so I just cancelled it there and had to order it through Microsoft. And amongst those hardware issues, I rediscovered what a pain in the butt it is to maintain Windows - 20 different individual driver installs, need antivirus, separate windows update, frequent system crashes resulting in reinstalls. ...I'll just pay $800 more that I originally didn't want to spend for the 2016 Macbook Pro when it releases - it's worth it to avoid dealing with faulty hardware, Dell and Windows!
Great Video. Was planning to buy this laptop but was not sure. You mentioned the good and bad aspects of the laptop and I love the fact that you open the bottom part to show the details what's inside . I think I might buy it thanks to you. Keep up the good work. Cheers!!
+Jarl Ballin' Honestly, I wanted this over the MacBook Pro, but I really needed a laptop at the time and couldn't have waited for it. Even now, I'd switch over to it in a heartbeat if I could. I have many problems with my MacBook Pro than I did with my previous machine (Surface Pro 3). Actually, to rephrase that, I've had too much problems on the OS X side than I have on Windows, even on my MacBook Pro.
***** Believe what you want to believe. I could care less if you don't believe me. I was just putting my experience with my MacBook Pro. My iMac never had these issues so I'm just assuming I have a defective MacBook or something.
Awesome review Dave! Super informative! One question, is this model you reviewed still the most recent one currently? If yes, do you know when the next version is coming out and is it worth waiting for it?
Great review, all of your reviews are very good and I subscribed because I compare it to others for my overall decision on what to buy. But that subtle music in the back drives me insane.
Thumbs up for sure! Been waiting for a great well produced video like this for the XPS. I need to dump my old late 2009 iMac and this laptop had my eye. Most of my youtube videos are just under 12minutes and it takes all night to render. Hahaha! Good job dude!
Thank you Dave. Finally with your reviews about the XPS 15. I was comfortable buying this laptop. I’m a Mac lover but Mac could not take some specific software’s for editing. So had to go with Windows. Yes truly this is a better buy than a Mac. If you think it’s to expensive for a laptop to be. Thank you again.
Great review Dave! I went back and forth between this laptop and the Macbook Pro 15. Ordered the later but I think Dell has built the best 15 inch windows laptop out there.
Same reasons why I bought my Dell XPS 13. Way better buy than a Macbook Pro 13. Dell is the best next to Samsung in my honest opinion. Asus is good too.
Hey Dave! So there are a lot of sales going on with the XPS 15 right now (at least in Europe.. maybe a new model is coming?). The same configuration you have with a Full HD screen costs $220 less than with the 4k screen. Do you think it is worth it to get the 4k screen? +Dave Lee
I'm impressed by your reviews, fast, concise, but highlighting all the practical details and performance issues. Why would anyone be giving this a thumb's-down? It would be great to see some 3d app performance testing (e.g. Max/Maya/C4D) but
excellent, concise, practical, well presented review. I can't understand why anyone would give this a thumb's-down. I'd love to see some 3d apps tested (MAX, Maya, C4D) but understand if that's not your area of expertise. It would also be great to see a high-end XPS compared to the Precision 5010 on a price/performance basis. Keep up the good work

I've been waiting for someone to just saw flat out if this is a better option than the Macbook, it's about damn time. Haha. Thanks!
Does anyone know IF the new XPS 15 handle rendering programs? Specifically architectural programs.
Stephen Cortez Yes. It does
Although this has the 960M, it certainly should.
Im sure he will need more ram than the gpu. I use Autodesk and 16gb ram of this is better than 8gb. But the gpu also nice anyway.

Thanks for including that rust benchmark. Literally the first question i asked myself at the beginning of the vid
that ugly ass dell logo will ruin any good looking design
+daviddaaannggg It doesn't matter. Nothing matters.
+Alin Marginean lmao
+daviddaaannggg You can skin it up and cover that logo then put your favorite logo xD lol jk
+Alin Marginean Does matter matter?
+Alin Marginean Does it matter that matter matters?
Great Video. Was planning to buy this laptop but was not sure. You mentioned the good and bad aspects of the laptop and I love the fact that you open the bottom part to show the details what's inside . I think I might buy it thanks to you. Keep up the good work. Cheers!!
Macbook Pro killer my ass...
+Jarl Ballin' It all depends on the user if it is or not.
4NewHop3 I find that hard to believe buddy
***** Believe what you want to believe. I could care less if you don't believe me. I was just putting my experience with my MacBook Pro. My iMac never had these issues so I'm just assuming I have a defective MacBook or something.
4NewHop3 Please tell me more...
man, you're so chilled out. nice review btw :)
Great stuff Dave... I'm in awe with the Dell XPS books...so much hype! One day I'll get my hands on one.
Hey dave, thanks to you i bought a Dell XPS 15 and I absolutly love it, even the keyboard!!! THANKS SOOO MUCH!!
Dude, you deserve waaay more subscribers than you have, keep it up! Great vid!
I don't know, why do you get such low views..but your videos are really nice! Better than many others in the business..
Your reviews are on point every time. Really helped me decide to buy this rig. Subscribed, keep up the good work!
The review I was waiting for. Uncanny as always, man. Thumbs up!
Great video, Dave. The camera work, review and video quality is top notch. You're a better reviewer than MKBHD to be honest.
+Camphlobactor thanks for support! but i think marques makes some of the hottest videos around hah
So i can easely edit 1080p photography and 1080p travel videos with multible layers?
Very high production value, great video man. You've got a sub
I LIKE WATCHING YOUR VIDEO FOR 2 MAIN REASONS & THAT IS THE PRESENTATION & CONTENT. KEEP IT UP.
Thanks for another awesome review! Loved the macro cinematography.
Thumbs up for sure! Been waiting for a great well produced video like this for the XPS. I need to dump my old late 2009 iMac and this laptop had my eye. Most of my youtube videos are just under 12minutes and it takes all night to render. Hahaha! Good job dude!
Slick review Dave, the XPS 15 looks ridiculously good.
Thanks for a good review! I love the way you analyze everything with such simplicity :)
Great video bro. Excellent commentary on all the features and on your experience with it. Probably the best review you've done.
Thank you again.
i was waiting for that review thanks you :)
Hi Dave, just come and support you. Great review!
+Terry Yue thanks for watching! =)
great review, like木 the quick but informative summary at the end
Great review Dave! I went back and forth between this laptop and the Macbook Pro 15. Ordered the later but I think Dell has built the best 15 inch windows laptop out there.
You do some good work with your reviews! Really impressed.
Hey, really great video. Your voice is calming and clear. Awesome video
Nice review! That was a really great animation at the end!
Same reasons why I bought my Dell XPS 13. Way better buy than a Macbook Pro 13. Dell is the best next to Samsung in my honest opinion. Asus is good too.
Watched this three times. Always convinces me to buy it before college.
How useful do you find the touch screen? Also, does the glossy display bother you at all? I've always used matte displays.
Clean and straight forward review, subbed :)
still using my surface pro 3 and I love it
Bro you are killing these reviews. Like seriously. Really great stuff. You are the next MKBHD.
+Jared R Trahan Glad you enjoy the content!
You are going to grow big man, nice videos!
Your vids are getting really good, I have the xps 15 twin ordered the Precision 5500
your sketch animation thing at @7min looks great. nice touch
Love your reviews Dave! Keep them coming.
Impressive quality of the review. Great job.
Amazing review.
Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Awesome video man, I'm waiting to see you in some of Unbox Therapy videos! Canada unite!!
one of the best reviews i have found. thanks.
Hey Dave! So there are a lot of sales going on with the XPS 15 right now (at least in Europe.. maybe a new model is coming?). The same configuration you have with a Full HD screen costs $220 less than with the 4k screen. Do you think it is worth it to get the 4k screen? +Dave Lee
This unit just arrived on my desk, i7 etc and wow!
Hey Dave, great job with the review. I wanted to see if you had any issues with the speakers not coming back on after unplugging headphones.
Keep up the good work
What a quality video. Love your demonstrations.
Hey you are my favorite tech reviewer.
