    I had a friend who was born in 1889. (I was a young boy in the early 1970s). His brother was catching for Ohio State or at Ohio State and a pitcher threw so hard, it hit the batter in the chest and killed him instantly. That pitcher never played another game of baseball again.

    Carl Mays wasn't really the issue, the issue was the ball. They would often use the same ball much of the game. Foul balls would be thrown back on the field and used. The balls got scuffed up and dirty and became hard to see and this incident changed a few rules including using several balls in a game. Now they use dozens in a game

  • @annettemalaski1967

    The main point you ENTIRELY MISSED was the fact that spit balls and other doctoring of the baseballs was still legal! Pitchers used chew juice, dirt and spit to give them an edge! The balls in play were often very dark and stained. They were very hard to to see.
    After Chapman's death, the spit ball and other alterations were made illegal. Umpires were directed to check the condition of the balls frequently and remove any suspect ball. It helped bring on the development of helments.

    I well remember when Mays died -- on his death bed he swore that he did not mean to hit Chapman. From what I have read over the years, commentators agreed that it was just a bad pitch. Not an intentional hit to the head.

Never has been, never will be. I think his stumbling actually makes his videos unique. Shows that hes human and it's not the same scripted bullshit over n over. Totally understandable you like it a certain way, but it's his videos. He can do them however he wants.

      The op wasn’t trying to hurt the guys feelings but your advice is the opposite of advice. What’s wrong with getting something right? Take advice from a guy who uses n instead of adding the two extra letters to spell the word correctly

    i honestly don't think Chapman would have made the HOF, he was well liked, but he was not a Hall of Fame caliber player. average hitter with little power and his RBI's were pretty non existent. The player that took his place, Joe Sewell was a dear friend of mine. He did make the HOF, He is pictured in the 1921 Team photo that you displayed, he is 2nd row, last player on the right. I'm glad no one took any photo's of Chappy laying on the field

      Chapman did not die on the field. He was still alive when they rushed him to the hospital. His last words: "Tell Mays I'm okay."
      There is a video of Carl Yastrzemski hitting a home run off Tom Seaver in the 1975 All-Star Game. He wasn't wearing a helmet. The last player allowed to bat without a helmet was Red Sox catcher Bob Montgomery, in 1979.

    • @larsfinlay7325
      @larsfinlay7325 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      he got grandfathered in and was allowed to choose to bat with or without a helmet. even if the odds of getting fatally beaned in the head were remote batting without a helmet was a foolish risk for him to take and it didn't add a single inch to his pecker. the old timers love the machismo act, which is what it is, an act. if Cash had gotten nailed in the head it would have killed him just like it'd kill you or me. we are all human and fragile.
