  • Achievements and trophies are often rewarded to players for things they get up to in games. However, sometimes we make up our own goals. Here are the achievements that we made up for ourselves, and therefore mattered to no one else but us.

I remember a long time ago before achievements were even a thing, my brother and I spent hours and hours trying to beat the original Splinter Cell without alerting anyone to anything. If the guard went "What was that?" It was concidered a mission failure and we had to reload. We nearly made it all the way through the entire game, until the very last level. There was a guard guarding stairs or a hallway or something, and we just couldn't figure out how to get around him. We must have spent several hours watching and creeping, and starting over and over and over again. Finally we just bit the bullet and tossed a can to the other side of room followed by the inevitable "Who's there?". We managed to finish the rest of the game according to our rules, but the one guard still bugs me to this day.

I had an entire play through of Skyrim where I didn't loot ANYTHING from the containers in dungeons. I did however leave stuff in them. Because how does that gold wind up in all those chests in a random cave in a typical RPG? The way that it wound up inside them was ME. I was responsible for it. Some random, eccentric rich guy was responsible for ALL of it. I did the math and I forget the exact amount, but I deposited close to a hundred thousand gold in coin, gems, and random high value pieces of armor in various dungeons across the province of Skyrim

Not sure how much you'd class it as an 'achievement' exactly, but I used to play the Ezio based Assassin's Creed games in a style I like to call "Giving The Families Closure".
The idea was that the random town guards you frequently had to kill usually hadn't actually done anything to warrant you murder-killing them. They were basically just guys doing their jobs, making a living pretty much the only way they knew how. The worst they'd do was sound an alarm or attack me on account of all those people I done murder-killed.
Younger me decided that it was perfectly justifiable to murder-kill as many of them as I wanted (I was an assassin after all), but disposing of the bodies was a step too far. Hiding bodies was fine, as long as it was in places that one could reasonably expect them to be eventually found (in a haystack for example), but if a body was destroyed or placed somewhere it might never be found then the family of said murder-killed guard would never know for sure if they'd been killed on the job, or if they'd abandoned them, or if they'd comitted suicide or whatever. The guard may have gotten between me and my objective, but I had no quarrel with their family. Plus I figured that there might be some kind of payout for families of guards killed on the job (I probably just murder-killed their sole breadwinner after all).
For the most part, this just meant not throwing bodies into wells or rivers, but I also decided that leaving bodies on rooftops was taboo as well (how often do people find themselves of roofs after all??), so whenever I killed a guard on top of a building I'd always carry the body to the nearest populated street and hurl the body into the crowd. For their families sake.

    • @57thorns
      @57thorns 4 ปีที่แล้ว +74

Sounder so nice until the "hurl the body into the crowd" part. I am sure someone would notice a dead body on a roof, with all the carrion birds and/or a hapless chimney sweep might find them.

    • @DarklordKaiser
      @DarklordKaiser 4 ปีที่แล้ว +70

@@57thorns I think my reasoning at the time was it would be easier on their families to say their goodbyes if the body had undergone as little decomposition as possible.
So I made sure the body was discovered quickly. Discoveries don't come much quicker than having them thrown at one of those sodding musicians.

GTA: Vice City. One night, during a group play session at my friend Wayne's house, someone idly wondered if you flew a helicopter into a Pan and Spray would you actually trigger a repaint. With cries of "For Science!" we each took turns to attempt this tricky feat. We chose the one on the western island facing the water, so we would have a good fly-up with minimal interference. 45 minutes later, after many comedic failures, I squeezed the ungainly whirlybird into the garage, landed it, and sure enough the door closed and reopened with a newly painted helo. Fun fact about Blood Stone: I was a tester on that game and there's an achievement in the opening levels where you chase the bad guy around Greece (Athens specifically) and can sink a bunk of ships during the process. Originally, that achievement was called "Grecian Economy." Which was a banger of a dark joke, since we were working on the game in 2009 and the Grecian Economy basically went into super debt and collapsed in 2008, and what you were doing in the level was basically leaving Greece like the Greeks had left their economy - Trashed beyond all repair. Ha ha ha. However, it was also a really MEAN joke, so we had to have some discussions about how to read the room and not be too cruel to the Greeks and open everyone involved in development and production of the game into a PR nightmare and potential lawsuits from the much more strict EU (at least when it comes to libel) because someone wanted to get a bit too cheeky with the banter.

When I was playing Vanilla WoW, I really wanted a Nightsaber mount for my Human main. Buying the faction mounts for a different race required the Exalted reputation, which, with your own faction, was tough enough by level 40, but as a human, you started at Neutral with the Night Elves rather than Friendly like the rest of the Alliance, which was an extra huge undertaking of reputation gaining (like 10k or something just to get to friendly and quests would give 5 rep iirc). I think running my level 3 character to Stormwind to jump a boat, and then hightailing it to the NE starting zone was the most harrowing and strangely rewarding part, but that was a LOT of time spent in Stonetalon and Desolace. I was garbage at PvP, which was the fastest way to build rep, so it was just questing and killing loads of demons and centaurs. Worth it? I don't know, but every now and then riding on it rather than the free warhorse Pallys get just made me smile.

Something the Prophets keep saying continously, but that small sentence ended with us, dragging every friggin corpse on the whole map into the Elevator at the end of the level, while muttering cultish rubbish like, "Come, the great journey awaits" or "noone left behing." or "The great journey begins now"
Just imagine the Marines watching in Terror, as we punched every covenant soldier we just killed through the level. And then my cousin killed the marines and let them join the covies in the elevator with the words: "The great Journey doesn't discriminate. It is the Salvation to all."

I think my favorite achievement was in Fallout 2, when I removed my wife's brain. It was not easy.
You can acquire this wife via a shotgun wedding. She will then join your party, kind of. She will follow you, but never fights or carries anything. She will go where you tell her to, until you get something like 5 hexes away, and then she will sprint back to your side. She was marginally better than the Pariah Dog.
Eventually, you can find a military complex where they make robo-brains that you might have seen in later Fallouts as well. I saw the opportunity for a "Wasteland Divorce" as nobody calls it. The tricky part was: I had to get her into a room, and activate the removal process from outside. So I had to get her as far into the room as possible, run out as fast as I could with enough time to turn and use lock picking on the door (because back in those days it could be used for both unlocking AND locking).
It was not a simple task, but then, there I had it, my wife's brain, ready to be put into a terrible murder bot. Hmm. I wonder if she would bear a grudge? Maaaaybe I'll just hang on to this.

I replayed the Starcraft 1 campaign pretty frequently, and my favorite self-imposed challenge was to finish the human campaign producing only marines for units. If a level started with non-marine units, I could use them, but once they died that was it. It's a lot of fun and actually pretty challenging in later levels. In particular, the last level requires that you destroy an ion cannon that is on its own island with a ton of missile turrets and other units. Basically you have to take over the rest of the map using marines, the AI will slowly move the units off the island to reinforce the rest of the map. Then you have to make a ton of barracks and float them to the island, taking missile shots the whole way. whichever ones dont get shot down start producing marines and you win. It's really a fun way to play.

To raise the gold I used my skinning skill to farm all the low skins and sell them on AH or, if they didn’t sell, I vendored them. Yes I leveled up sooo many times farming skinning (the least profitable until max level), that I went from 30-37 and 55-60 just from hunting mobs and skinning them. My personal achievement in any MMO with a player based economy... "Be the 1%"
To figure out a scheme and earn enough gold by the time I reach max level that I out wealth most players in the game/guild.
To complete the achievement, I do have to poll sample size of players to find out how much "gold/credits/dollars" they have before I am please I succeeded. Bonus Achievement points if I can buy something insanely rich in front of someone. (Succeeded in WoW, APB, Everquest, City of Heroes, Star Trek Online)
I lose the achievement, if I get banned from the game during the process. (I failed in Guild Wars, Ultima Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, LOTRO)
Best was in World of Warcraft... by the time I hit L40 in Original Classic, I had enough gold to buy every mount in game (13000 gold), the average guildies had 100-250g and no one on the server had an epic mount yet. (Wasn't first to get an epic mount though, I was leveling too slow cause I spent too much time on Auction House). Did have a long conversation with a Game Master cause my auction house trading was getting reported, alot! So I did have to curb it back... by creating more AH Alts to diffuse the blame :P
Worst was Guild Wars... they banned me for having too much gold, unbanned me so they could spy on me to find out how I earned it, but I didn't fall for it, so they banned me again. Got myself unbanned, they took all my gold and gear, and then promised to return "an average amount - which was tiny" and pardon me for my previous behaviour if I told them what I did. Told them what I did... they patched it out... then they banned me later for something else :P

I started a new game and I spent weeks carefully proceeding through the game without picking up any extra heart containers and without getting killed by any bosses. I was so determined. I too spent way too many hours fishing, but when it was all said and done, I had some kick ass robes, a crap load of gold from selling fish and items gained while fishing, and a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Jane! The feels! Ok, storytime, growing up when the WoW achievements came out there was a meta-achievement for fishing requiring all of the hardest achievements of the fishing professions. The hardest of all being to win the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza. A once a week, on a Sunday lunchtime, server-wide event to catch rare fish the fastest and hand them in. Not first to catch, but first to race across the area and get to the NPC at the top of the zone and hand them in.
I got all the other achievements, but problem. I grew up in a very religious family, so had to go to church around the same time as the event. For 2 years, I missed the event, occasionally rushing home and finding that it had just finished.
Then one day, it happened. We were all ill. This was it. My one chance to get the competition and the meta-achievement!!
I braced, knees weak, palms sweaty, vomit held in by lack of spaghetti. I raced to the area, caught fish, nearly with the required amount, when the server-wide announcement “Another player has caught all the fish!” I was heartbroken, but then I caught the last fish and raced across the area. I saw the other player. THE FOOL had autorun on and was caught on a texture. I sprinted past him, made it to the NPC. My name went up in the /1 chat. Achievements popped one after the other and my God I have never felt more alive!!!
That was 14 years ago and in truth, I know I never will. I peaked and it’s all downhill from here.

Love this video! I have never done actual achievements as a thing before, and I'm nothing more than average at most games, but I really got a bug with the Yiga clan hideout in BOTW. I wasn't that far into the game, but I was DETERMINED to wipe them OUT. Anyone who has done that area knows that just fighting them is ridiculous unless you're a god mode player, which I am not. So I stealth killed. Ice sword, lightning sword, ice sword, lightning sword. It took me hours, since you get fully reset if they catch you. In the end, I did it... I killed them all. At the end of it, there was an eerie silence in the hideout. I went back there multiple times over the game... despite the fact the clan kept sending assassins after me, there was never anyone in the hideout again.

Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire.: Using the spell "Thermonuclear Blast" to take out the final boss. Normally this is a joke spell. You use it, you destroy the world. Even if you use the spell normally in the final fight, you also kill your party.
However, something about the message you get when you do this made me think it could go differently. And it can. If you time everything perfectly, you can weaken the dragon with the pillars, AND tell each party member what your plan is and whichever love interest you rescued from Hades will teleport everyone but yu away from the battle, THEN you can cast the spell and only take out yourself and the dragon.
I still have a screencap from pulling this off. There's no reason to do this. None at all, but I'm still glad I pulled off the timing.
    The death message:
"The Dragon of Doom would destroy your new home,
And Kill all the people who called you a friend.
So you Blasted the Dragon at the cost of your life,
With all Valor, you faced your vvictorious end.

Skyrim is one of my put on some music and relax games and one day I decided to make a normal realistic person. Not an adventurer or vampire, werewolf, mage, or anything like that. Just some dude in Skyrim. He chopped wood during the day and played at the inn in Solitude at night (I used a mod to make him a bard). He then joined the Bard College and then the Army to fight in the Civil War. After that he came home, eventually made enough to buy a house, got married, adopted, retired and still plays nights at the inn. Just a normal dude. He is my favorite character I've ever played as in Skyrim.

There was this light squad tactics game on the Wii called "Battalion Wars 2", which is tangentially related to the "Advanced Wars" series. In it you commanded a small squad of infantry, armored vehicles, planes, and ships, all of which have their own strengths and weaknesses and could only attack certain other units. Pretty standard RTS stuff, however the game's main gimmick was that you took direct control of one of your units at all times and could switch control to any of your units on the fly, turning the game into a hybrid RTS and 3rd person shooter/arcade flight sim/world of tanks/world of warships thing. Usually, this meant that the player would take direct command of whatever unit was the most combat effective for the current skirmish to protect their more vulnerable units, since player controlled units took less damage, dealt more damage, and your AI controlled teammates were bleh.
What I did, instead, was something I liked to call "Rambo mode". Any time a level spawned the "machinegun veteran" unit (one of the only units that could effectively attack infantry, vehicles, sea , and air targets, though he wasn't the best at any of those roles) I would take control of the machinegun veteran, command the rest of my army to wait at the starting area, and proceeded to try and beat the entire level on my own just to show them how a real man does it. And also because I had way too much free time as a 12 year old boy.

My favorite fake achievements are in the original Legend of Zelda. First, I tried to skip the brown sword at the beginning of the game, and start with the white sword. It only takes a couple extra heart containers, so no big deal.
Then I decided to skip the brown and the white swords, and only get the Master Sword. Quite a bit more challenging, but ultimately doable.
Then I just decided "Fudge it, no swords. Get to Ganon without a sword." And I did that one.
The best part is you need a sword to defeat Ganon, so you can't actually win. But just completing the journey feels like a win.
Then I did it on the second quest. That was the true win.

You know how when you complete Metal Gear Solid AND watch to the end of the credits without skipping them, you get either the infinite ammo bandana or the stealth suit, depending on which ending you choose? And then you can replay the game with this new gear?
Well it turns out that if you complete the game a second time, and choose the other ending, then you can ALSO unlock the other item, and do a 3rd run of the game with both, now pretty OP and with a full knowledge of how to defeat every boss, solve every puzzle, where every guard goes, etc etc.
BUT there's another item you can unlock. Complete the game 3 times, and on your 4th playthrough Snake's character skin is switched so that instead of his sneaking suit he's wearing a tuxedo like James Bond. The tuxedo confers no additional powers at all, it just looks cool. So yeah, I completed the game as the suavest version of Solid Snake, knowing every inch of the thing backwards & entirely untroubled by even the toughest battles.
And the best part is that I didn't even own a PS1 - it was my mate's PS1 & I was only doing it because he dared me to complete MGS in the tux, not realising how much I was gonna really cut into his FFVII time in order to murder everyone in Shadow Moses 4 times over. Should've been studying for my degree, but no regrets at all.

A little added challenge was not having the pack mule perky that enabled me to run while over encumbered and not having the aquaboy perk that gave me resistance against rads and water breathing. It really just consumed more time than anything, but it helped me feel more immersed with the inconvenience of the apocalyptic wasteland.

The WoW story reminded me of... shudder... the Stranglethorn Vale fishing tournament, held weekly. It was a cool enough thing to do prior to achievements actually coming out, but after they came out, it got more competitive because achievement hunters wanted to knock off their one-chance-a-week achievement.
I was an achievement hunter when they first came out (was one of the highest few on the server - Dath'Remar IIRC - along with a guildmate who was also very high, and some alliance competitiors), and one particular... Sunday I think it was on? Anyway, I got my last fish. Was running to the NPC to turn it in. And like 5 seconds out from the NPC... someone else turned it in first. BAH! Not only that, but that player (a fellow raider, albeit in a more casual guild) actually stopped playing WoW less than a week later. 🙃

Back when I played RuneScape, Runecrafting used to be my lowest skill. Then, they released the Runespan, which I found incredibly fun at the time and also catapulted me upwards in levels, to the point where I decided that Runecrafting would be my first max-level skill. As I closed in on that mythical 99 Runecrafting, I started passing the time by "leveling backwards", counting the time to the next level by saying "oh, this is enough to get from level 1 to level 60, now it's enough to go from 1 to 59, now to 58", and so on, because boy it's a slog, and I got it in my head to "close the loop" by hitting 99 Runecrafting by crafting air runes at the air shrine, because those are the first runes you make. And that's what I did.
