      Same here; Friends and peers liked the rock music of the day, but I was more selective. Not every guitar riff could please me, beautiful singing could.
      The Carpenters were seen as 'music for our parents', but I liked it whenever it was on the radio. So I bought a double album with all their best songs for my parents as a gift. Listening to that album first myself, I discovered many songs that had not heard on the radio. I was hooked though could not share with friends.

      I'm a 70's gal and I was a very proud Carpenters fan..but then I wasn't cool either..loved her voice then..love her still.. I find it so sad when these young uns listen to this wonderful lady and are astounded at her talent that she isn't here to hear all the plaudits..she had such sad life..her mother prefered Richard..her husband married her for her money..the love of her life was a British music producer but her mother went bananas when she found out.. whilst she was starving herself to death..because some idiot journo called her fat..Richard was drugged up with qualudes her mother criticised her about everything..her dad wouldn't go against the mom.. poor Karen..my heart literally breaks for her..all of those emotions go into that magical voice.. 🇬🇧💞✝️🙏💔💔🎶

    She had such a lovely, calming voice. It was so sad that a jerk of a critic said she was getting "chubby" which she wasn't, but it made her terribly self-conscious and she developed Anorexia. She suffered for years and eventually died of a weakened heart-heart attack. Words matter. Loved your reaction!

      I watched autopsy: the last days of Karen, in addition of the "chubby" comment earlier in here career, there where family issues too. Although she had recieved treatment for her anorexia, such as it was back then, they found at autopsy she had used laxatives, epicac, and had been taking levothyroxine (used for hypothyroidism) to speed up her weight loss. The problem with thyroxine if not monitored and used at the correct therapeutic dose, it can cause untold damage to the heart. It is so very sad what she put herself through. She was a beautiful woman, with a soulful voice, that was smooth as silk. Such an amazing talent lost way to soon. If you haven't seen videos of her niece Mindi Karen Carpenter, shes got her aunts voice!

    Karen Carpenter had a voice like liquid gold, she had perfect pitch and in the recording studios she was known as "one take Karen" because she always got the song perfect on the first take, almost unheard of. She one of the best famale voices of all time and Elvis is arguably the best male voice.

    This song and this singer are a match made in musical heaven. She kills the song and there are several good versions of the great Leon Russell song. She OWNS it.

    • @wnsafford1854
      @wnsafford1854 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just to give credit where due, Leon co-wrote "Superstar." Writing credit on the original was just to Bonnie Bramlett & Leon Russell (released as a single, Dec. 1969 by Delaney & Bonnie & Friends). Delaney Bramlett later also gained writing credit & Rita Coolidge has since said she should have been credited too.

    • @staceyshaffer180

    • @wnsafford1854
      @wnsafford1854 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@staceyshaffer180 I don't think there's a recording of Leon singing it (it's really meant to be sung by a woman). He was with Delaney & Bonnie at the time of the 1969 original, so he likely played piano on that (with Bonnie singing lead, Eric Clapton on guitar & Rita Coolidge singing back-up). I know he played piano on the live version, where Rita sang lead (Joe Cocker's 1970 Mad Dogs & Englishmen album). Also, Bonnie sang it at Leon's funeral, though she was so broken up, that was really more "moving" than good.

    The Carpenters are a very big rabbit hole to go down. They were the top selling group of the 1970's. Karen's voice is considered to be one of the greatest of all times. She and her brother Richard were phenomenal musicians. Karen was a fantastic drummer besides having that voice. Richard was a fantastic keyboard player, composer and arranger who sang harmony with Karen. Karen's voice was always pitch perfect with a lower range whose tone could melt your heart and soul. You should check out some of their earlier videos of Karen singing and playing the drums. Rainy Days and Mondays is a great one to start with. Thanks for this reaction. Loved it !

    One word for the Carpenters: "QUALITY"!
    They were amazingly advanced in both vocal (Karen, of course) and her brother/virtuoso Richard in his music both playing and arranging. They made music soar in excellence! Always very satisfying. I'd suggest you start listening to their albums from the first to the last paying close attention to how each album develops. You won't be sorry to take the time. Greetings from across the pond. The voice. Been a fan for more years than I care to remember. Was fortunate to see Karen and Richard in concert in London. Never forget Richard`s arrangements. Had to change the lyric from to sleep with you to be with you to ensure the song got air time and to reflect the times. Where do I start with recommendations for other tracks to review? Goodbye to Love with the Tony Peluso guitar solo. RIP Tony. Other tracks. A Song for You. Great Richard arrangement and the Bob Messenger sax solo supporting Karen''s superlative vocal. Perhaps not so well known but This Masquerade. Karen''s timing and delivery on this track gets me every time. I appreciate that You Tube is a visual medium and I enjoy it and these discovery video's. However take into account that excerpts from TV shows are not the best audio and do not fully reflect the quality of the recorded songs which you should listen to. Also unfortunately because of Karen leaving us in 1983 TV studio audio equipment was nothing like it is today. Always listen to the 'record' many of which have been remastered. Kudos to you though for reviewing a great artist(s) that Richard and Karen were. Continue to rest in peace Karen and thanks for the music.

    The best voice ever in my opinion. RIP Karen Carpenter. Try Rainy Days and Mondays and also check out videos of her drumming....she was a great drummer!

    The Carpenters was my first concert when I was 12 and Karen Carpenter is one of the best ever female singers.

    Live, no auto tune. You had to be a real singer back then. Her death was a tragedy

    Gosh. I recognised it as soon as it started, but I had no idea it was called Superstar.
    I was an early teen when this hit. I couldn't bear listening to her after she left us.
    I guess Richard was behind this one too. Wonderful song, especially the recording.

    Great, great reaction. So many hits, and such a talent she was. I have a request, out of the countless special songs they did - it's titled Masquerade. It's been done by many artists, including Luther Vandross and George Benson but her version is my favorite. Please consider it. Love your reactions.

    • @stevetournay6103
      @stevetournay6103 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting that you cite This Masquerade in a comment on a video review of Superstar. Both songs were written by the great Leon Russell. A Song For You, another Russell song, was covered by Carpenters too. All three are superb.

      @jimwilsky2922 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevetournay6103 Yeah Steve, I think there's a pattern there huh! Russell was a songwriting genius in my humble opinion - and then add that absolute golden voice of Karen's, along with the arrangement and composer talents of her brother Richard...and well, you have magic.

    This does appear to be a true live vocal. Subtly different from the famous studio track that became a hit single (and was not only a first take but the first time Karen ever sang the song!).
    There's a kind of technical review channel called Wings Of Pegasus that has a segment comparing Karen's live and studio lead vocals. Few vocalists ever have sounded so flawless live. Plus Karen was a kickass drummer, too (Wings Of Pegasus has a segment about that as well)...
