    Not just her voice, but her phrasing is masterful. The melancholy and longing in her voice is amazing.

    Karen had a haunting voice. Many people have noticed it. Considered by many in the business to be the best female vocalist. Died young in her thirties.

      Haunting is synonymous with tormenting, distubing. A difficult word if expressed wrong. I know listeners meant the use as captivating or alluring.??? Ok, maybe haunting too!

    Karen Carpenter had an unrivalled and underrated voice! She sounded the same whether live or in the studio. This track could easily be a bond theme tune, very haunting like you stated bro

    • @ratdad48
      @ratdad48 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Underrated??? Now, Who are the ones that claimed her voice as just average? That would denote groups of critics and others.

    • @jackmorris7741
      @jackmorris7741 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ratdad48 Karen Carpenters, whilst having a stunningly beautiful voice, doesn’t have the strongest of vocals and isn’t a standout lead singer therefore often isn’t included in the conversation of “best female voice/vocalist” so I’d say by default she gets underrated.

      True, however I highly recommend that you would read up on Hal Blaine, a legendary studio musician - drummer that Richard hired to perform on several Carpenter hits. This man
      performed over 30,000+ sessions, 6,000 singles, 150 top ten hits of which 40 went to number #1. When Karen was doing the vocals on a song, it was usually Hal doing the drumming. Hal was a member of the "Wrecking Crew" a group of studio musicians that were the very best in the field of music, including Glen Campbell, Carol Kaye, Leon Russell,
      Tommy Tedesco, Joe Osborn, Ray Pohlman, Earl Palmer, and many more which were also members of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. They recorded Mamas & Papas, Sonny & Cher,
      Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Beach Boys, The Ronettes, Simon & Garfunkel, The Partridge Family, Johnny Rivers, Ike &Tina Turner, Davy Jones of the Monkees, Jan & Dean, the Righteous Bros., Paul McCartney, John Denver, Bread, Captain &Tenille, Carpenters, Eric Clapton, and also worked for the Major Studio Networks, TV theme shows, Commercials, Movies, & Documentaries.

      @Joel Jimenez most Carpenters' fans know the history with Hal and Karen. I'd suggest checking out all of the recordings of each of the Carpenters' albums. Every Carpenters fan knows Hal Blaine's input on their albums, but he did NOT play all of the songs on the albums, nor did he even play one of the songs on some of their albums. Karen did, including the first layer when it's just the voice, the bass and the drums. Karen plays ALL of the songs on the album, OFFERING/TICKET TO RIDE. She plays some of the songs on the CLOSE TO YOU album, including my personal favorite on that album, "Another Song". She also plays some of the songs on the CARPENTERS album and the A SONG FOR YOU album. I love Karen's playing on "This Masquerade" with that awesome jazz sound. For the album, NOW AND THEN, she plays the entire album, all of it, the whole album from beginning to end, including the first-takes with just the voice, bass and drums. Richard talks about this in some of his interviews but especially about her perfect timing and how he needed her to change something in the song, "Yesterday Once More". He had done something different to the song, even though it was considered already complete, but he had done a last minute change to the song. So she had to pick up where the original recording leaves off, instrumentally and blend in the newer version that Richard had just rewritten, and, according to Richard, she blended it in perfectly. Richard highly praises her (again) for her impeccable timing. Now, Richard would know and verifies through that interview that she played the whole freaking album. She also played most of the songs for the album HORIZON, including another of the biggest hits of their career, "Please, Mr. Postman". So, yeah, Hal was huge for the musical soundtrack of that time period, and he was a huge influence and great friend to Karen, but - but! - Karen Carpenter played some songs on most of their albums, and played ALL of the songs on some of their albums in their entirety, including some of the single-release versions of the songs that played on the radio. Hal didn't play the entire albums. He sometimes played for the single release of a particular song for the radio release, but not every time. She played a lot of their songs, especially in the early years before 1976 or so. She really loved and admired Hal, and he her. His influence was huge for her. And she definitely created a huge kit for herself due to Hal Blaine's kit. Her kit continued to grow from 1970 through 1974, mostly from Hal's influence. But to think that he played all of the percussion on their singles and albums is not accurate. It's a shame that ppl assume that. In the Carpenters' case, Karen was still very much playing on at least a few songs per album, and all of the songs on some of their albums throughout most of her career. Giving Karen the credit she's due here. Also Elvis's former drummer, Ronnie Tutt, joined them later in the studio for a later album or two. But Karen deserves the credit for all the songs she played on their albums, singles, and/or first-takes.

    No lip-synching to a backing track on this one. This is her live voice. No other female vocalist then or now even comes close to sounding this good. Even with the help of auto-tune. I really miss Karen Carpenter.

    Ever notice how listening to a lot of live performances by singers is disappointing because they're just one-take affairs with no sweetening in the studio or do-overs? Gee, sounded better on the record...know what I mean? Well, this is Karen, live, unlike your other two reactions (Rainy Days and Mondays & We've Only Just Begun), which were dubs. Live, Karen kills it. Right on-pitch and perfect. She doesn't hide behind production or excessive embellishment of the melody. She can sing it straight and it's perfect. Just beautiful.

    Please review her 1971 performance at 21yo A Place To Hideaway. She also performed other songs in this performance. Amazing, I promise. 7 Grammy nominations with 3 awards. Also, 1975 rock drummer on the year according to Playboy. Multiple gold/platinum albums. No auto-tune, twerking, screaming, stripping, piercings, just a voice that makes you listen. She was just as good live as in studio. Almost every song she recorded was in one take. Many artists thought she had an outstanding voice (including her friend Dionne Warwick). Alot of us believe she is the best female vocalist-ever. Never found love. Sick with anorexia nervosa for many years, but continued singing, putting out albums, and died at 32.

    Karen's voice was perfect. I've seen computer analysis of Karen singing this song live, verses the recorded version. They were both perfect. As the person who did the computer analysis said, "This is the most accurate duplication I've ever seen between the live performance and the recorded version I have ever seen of any singer." Also, John Bettas, who wrote 6 of the Carpenter Hits said, "I first heard Karen sing when she was 16 years old. She sounded then, like she sounded when she did Superstar. She blew my mind." RIP Karen.

As wonderful as this performance is (and it tracks the studio version pretty closely), the studio version is nothing short of legendary, if only for the fact that the lead vocal was the first take "work lead," with Karen reading the lyrics off a napkin. Her interpretation was so flawless that Richard chose to use it for the final recording.

    That's one of the things I miss most about 70s music, they were in no rush to convey the mood and message of a song. Emphasis on the mood. I remember when Madonna did Live to Tell and there was that quiet break in the song and everyone was so shocked but for me it was gratifying to see someone bring that pacing back, break the constrictions of pop music and take their sweet time🙂

And quite surprising seeing someone your age really enjoying Karen Carpenter’s music. Back in the 80’s I worked for several years, with Broadway director Joe Layton. Joe was very protective of Karen and they were very close friends. I got to spend Thanksgiving with Joe & Karen in 1982. Unfortunately she would pass just a few months later. It was very heartbreaking and still so sad all these years later. Means a lot seeing others still enjoying her music. Thank you!

    Sadly the haunting feeling that you get from this song is because Karen never really received her mother's love like she needed and crave and Richard always got and it seemed like every time she found a guy that she could fall in love with he would turn out to be bad news and she needed that unconditional love so bad it caused her early demise at 32 years old as she had over the years suffered from anorexia nervosa and done so much damage to her heart it finally I believe it was in February 83 maybe or 82 or something she died of cardiac arrest and her parents home.

She has plenty of live performances (she doesn't lip sync) including Blue Bayou, La Charreada (in Spanish), You're No Good for starters. I hope you fall in love with her. Subbed!

    The brass you hear is a French horn, I believe.

    Karen’s brother Richard was a master at arranging music and taking advantage of Karen’s expansive vocal talent . A perfect combination we may never see again .

    For comparison you should listen to the original, at that time titled "Groupie," by Delaney and Bonnie and Friends. Bonnie Bramlett sings a more raw version which is equally good.

    I find it hard too believe people are doing the Carpenters first reactions?? The world lost a great singer through anorexia. Such a shame. 😢😢😢😢😢😢

    I couldn't agree with you more on letting the instrumentals last a little longer to let the mood set in.
