  • A beautiful lump of Barra horsepower deserves a respectful engine bay and Woody's Crown wagon is looking a bit abused. Today on The Skid Factory we're painting the engine bay and finalising the last few time consuming jobs so that we can power up the Haltech Nexus R3 and hit kit for a first start!
    All of the internal parts used on this engine are available via Goleby's Parts.

    Hi Al and Woody,
    If you can find an AN safety bolt with the rating you require for the flex plate, you can safety wire the bolts just like an Aircraft would have for the propeller. Bolts at your strength range exist, and all that’s left is learning to safety wire.
    Love the channel, thanks for the great content.

    I love Toyota Crowns. I owned 3 when I was in my mid 20s in the early 2000s. I loved the 1970s models....mainly for their look. I had a '76 and 2 '78 models. First real work i ever did on a car was fully recondition the 6 cyl Toyota donk in the '78 crown. Amazing vehicle. So comfortable....sooooo well made. It had extras that I didn't see become common in other cars until the early 2000s. I just loved the lines as well. They were a beautiful car and still are.
    I was told that you could drop a 6 cyl from a Ford or Holden in it without too much drama....that was a bit beyond my abilities at the time (I only had a Haines manual for a Cressida, that had the same engine as the Crowns....no TH-cam back then to help me out lol). If I could find another 78 model crown in half decent condition, id buy it in one second flat. I've driven other luxury cars from the same era and the Crown was simply better in every respect. I miss them big time...so this warms my cold dead heart 😁

    Nordlock washers will stop any bolt from coming undone. i'm surprised more people don't use them. they're costly but bulletproof.

    • @williamernst7865
      @williamernst7865 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it takes 1.5 the tightened torque for them to come loose. I remember when I worked on oil rig equipment, bolts installed with notes was the only ones not requiring safety wire.

    Great to see that you finally started to utilize turbo speed sensor - they make a big change in how you tune the engine

  • @gordowg1wg145
    @gordowg1wg145 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, as a rule of thumb, the engine cranks off the battery, but the car runs off the alternator, so taking the power for the vehicle from the latter is a sound move - especially as the alt' battery/starter cable is usually a heavy gauge, anyway, on modern vehicles because of the high alt' current potential.
    I also agree about the over-use of the word "billet", when "machined" is often a better term.

      Or use Nord-Lock washers?

    • @haydnpaull5447
      @haydnpaull5447 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not just the bolts loosening that's the problem. The heads shear off them too. I'm the first guy to recommend Nordlock washers in the correct application eg exhaust manifolds, turbine housing to manifold, turbo oil drain. But a flex plate , I think a Nordlock may increase the likelihood of shearing compared to a retainer.

  • @jania4398

    Could you use aerospace bolts on that flex plate? Torque them and use the lockwire to lock them to each other. Little overkill, but on this case maybe necessary if it's recurring problem on those barras.
