Red Blue’s story is such a refreshing take on sports shounen because all of the main characters we spend time with would be “heels” or antagonists if this were another another manga, and it really shows with the protagonist, Aoba. Aoba really is like an evil Deku from MHA. He’s nice, a bit awkward, and at times naïve, but he’s also vengeful, vindictive, and usually has some ruthlessly sardonic reply to all of his opponent’s life philosophies. In other words, the perfect heel. But there’s been foreshadowing that even the “shounen protagonist” characters have some sort of darkness within them as well, which really sells one of the ideas in the story that if someone wants to be good at MMA, there has to be something wrong about them. God I love this series and I wish the TL’s caught up with it sooner 😭
I don't think that it's something "wrong" per se, but most folks like us are either angry with some part of our life, or we get a real joy getting physical and testing ourselves. I mean, come on, it was mid to late 1800's when we stopped using swords. Combat that wasn't specialized in ranged weaponry only was very common. A little over 100 years is nowhere near enough time for a species that was just like any other animal that fought tooth and nail to live to get out of it. Hell, the people who have some sort of enjoyment of it think about it more often. How often do you think about your favorite game that you played just yesterday versus the ones you haven't played in years? Same concept, different topic.
"He's like a depressed version of Deku" You say, as if that wasn't Deku's entire character and reason for doing all his note taking in the first place.😂
Found it from this video, thanks! It's really fun seeing a sports/fighting manga where main character(s) have nuanced/realistic motivations, especially when it lends to humor like it does a lot in Red Blue. One of my favorite parts so far was Aoba's face lighting up when he hears his coach shit talking Kenshin after they see him on tv.

28 seconds of this video was all it took for me to pick this manga up. Read it up to the current chapter (35) and now I'm back here to finish the video. I was a big fan of Ippo back in the day, and I also read Holyland, but that's about it. Not much of a shounen guy in general either. But the idea of a weird side character clawing his way into the spotlight is pretty cool. And him being a grappler is pretty awesome. Seems like every shounen protagonist ever mostly punches because it's cool or whatever Also, love the salaryman. Probably my favorite character lol
This is... basically just a standard protagonist. Study fast, talented, draw people in effortlessly with his "unique" brand of charisma. Aint nothing background about him.

A quiet life? You know who else wants a quiet life? My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.

I love this manga and the message is completely true. MMA it's a sport where you go in there to completely dominate and destroy your opponent. No one who does that for a living or a hobby can be a sane person, not even those wonderboy types
So basically until now Aoba basically became like Paul Craig in his style. Primarily a grappler with relatively shitty striking. Wouldn't be surprised if he pulls out a hail-mary triangle choke in the dying seconds against Hazuru. Like how Craig choked out Ankalaev. Although I would like Aoba to develop into an elite grappler with really polished striking such as Oliveira, GSP, or Makhachev. As an MMA/UFC fan I really like this manga and hope to see more of it.
