I liked season 1 of the anime on Netflix which inspired me to read through all of Kengan Ashura. This was during 2020 and jump started my journey through reading manga as a young adult. I can’t recommend this series enough for anyone who likes martial arts.

I like the point you made about how Spartan combat would end up looking like the MCU's portrayal of Captain America. Basically everything he does in Winter Soldier is the epitome of how to best weaponize a superhuman condition. The way he'll just adapt his running momentum towards striking makes every hit look like it would send a man flying... which they do. Cap is an underrated character, honestly.

There is a large strain of deconstructionist samurai manga. Many folks in Japan see the Meiji restoration as the successful revolt from cruel samurai overlords. Most of us in the US don't have this historical context of Japanese class consciousness.

Hmmm. I get the feeling that, if it was given time to cook properly this might've become the next Ippo, while that legendary series has a gentle pace that makes me feel it wouldn't work these days. Had no idea it was the same author as the Sumo manga though, I had only glanced at that other one and thought it felt familar.

The use of such an overtly lethal terrain feature makes me wonder just how closely this family martial art embodies the traditional Japanese philosophy of self-defense. Maybe I’m reading too deeply into this and it’s just meant to be a “badass MC moment”. Although the Kawada’s work on Hinomaruzumou was pretty deliberate with its choice of moveset employed for any given character moment. Example: a sumo wrestler with a growth spurt still knows how to expertly utilize the low stance meant to counter larger opponents
