      If you had ran trails before then, it would have been easier for you in Ironman or something related to Ironman and the Leadville

      Try and find a hotel with a gym at 1500-2000m and stay there for about 1-2 weeks and train before the race. This will help you so much with the elevation! This is what professional ski racers do and it really makes a huge difference. I live 700m above sea level and when i’m at sea level my pace is 30sec to a minute faster.

    Leadville is an awesome race! I won the race a few years ago and live at sea level, so it was very gratifying. While you can't control altitude and not everyone can go to altitude for an extended periods to acclimatized, you can train for the elevation gain and loss of the race. You need to get your body trained to climb (both by practicing your hiking and doing things like hill repeats) and descend. The good news is that the majority of Leadville is not technical terrain, but focus on building your climbing legs!

    Treadmill, stairs, parking garage, hill repeats, etc... You can control where you train. The terrain in Leadville is no joke. Don't focus on pace, work on getting vert. Best of luck.

      This is so true. I did a trail run in the white mountains of new Hampshire and the sheer elevation gain is what killed me. There were sections that were so steep I was slowed to a fast hike

      Over 2yrs sober. Completed my first triathlon last week. Goal is to do a half Ironman next spring. Running is better than drugs and alcohol ever was. I only wish I would have started sooner. Keep it up bro!!

    Prior to the race you should do 1 mile every hour for 30 hours to get your mind ready for what it will entail staying awake and running you’re a beast keep up the great work. GO ONE MORE!!!

    Good work man…you’re a brave man attempting to run a 100 miler ultra with just a few months of training. Trail Ultra running is a way different animal compared to Marathon running. Best of luck man.

    You HAVE to get elevation training in more than the technical training. I'm not saying you won't finish or at least get super far, but this one's going to rip you to shreds if you don't get elevation training in.

      @@jans3067 Elevation training is training for the gain in elevation you’ll experience when running in the mountains. The air at higher altitudes is colder, less dense, and contains smaller amounts of oxygen than the air at sea level, so it’s harder on your lungs and you’ll have to take more breaths to get enough oxygen. If you’re not acclimated to it it can be quite rough. Just the other day I went to the top of St. Mary Peak here in Montana which is at an altitude of about 9,350 feet. That last stretch of climbing was pretty hard and you can certainly tell the effects of the altitude and elevation gain.
      Technical is a term for terrain/trails that requires more attention to your footwork, foot placement, balance, controlling your speed, etc. because there will be rocks, roots, sticks, loose dirt, etc.

    I just got out a few years ago, coming out of the 173rd, was in for 10 years as an 11B and you have motivated me to get back into running.     Had my first ever ultra marathon 100 miler one month ago. Didn’t finish got through 60/100 miles. Was a personal record but I didn’t finish so I am not satisfied. I am 20 years old and will come back stronger than ever and hit that 100. Thanks Nick for what you do you are inspiration.

    So excited to see you take on trail running! I think it is so much more fun and interesting than road running. And even though it can be more physically demanding than running on the roads (because of elevation and technicality), I find it to be much easier on my knees and feet than the roads.     I am really interested to see he if finishes the race. I am actually a little surprised by how little he is running and how he seems to not be that concerned with the elevation. As I was watching the video, I was wondering if anyone else had the same thoughts and sure enough I see other similar comments in the comment section.
    BUT we all know Nick has a very strong mindset, plus his conditioning... I dont know, I think he's not quite prepared, but what the hell do I know- I am excited to see what he does and if he proves most of us wrong. But damn I hope he tweaks his training to include more serious vertical work. And I'm sure he'll bring back some good wisdom from the race to share with us =)

    Well said Nick. Everyday I ask myself, what do I choose to focus on. On things/people that are life giving or life sucking. You can’t control circumstances/people that surround you, but you can choose how to deal with them. There will always be negative people around.     There's an entire section in this video talking about consuming energy, where we choose whether you choose negative or positive energy, and all any of you can focus on is criticizing Nick and saying he's going to fail if he doesn't do X. Let the man continue with his plan, he's clearly accomplished a LOT of tasks that most will never, I'm sure he's not underestimating this challenge at hand

    My man is going to get roasted by the vert out there. There's a six mile loop near my house that ends up with 500 feet of gain, and the first time I did it my quads felt like they were being torn about by a meat shredder. Walked the last two miles. It's a whole different animal when you've trained to be a flat-track bully. Leadville reduces elites to amateurs. Not to mention the heat.

    You will learn so much about yourself.
    The night running is always a challenge after 10-12 hours and the sun goes down. Existing inside of the headlamp is pretty wild. The highs and lows are so intense. You will at some point want to quit, you will question yourself, don’t quit. Get that buckle

    Oof. I know people who train for this for months, even years, and still DNF. Love the drive for a challenge, but you can’t ignore the gravity of the race. Need more volume, elevation, and altitude training to even finish. I know you’ll go until they have to pull you off the course! Just don’t want you being disappointed! Excited to see what happens!

    You might want to check out hoka trail shoes since you wear higher drop/higher cushion shoes for road running. Will be less of an adjustment and the extra cushioning will help get you through 100 miles.

    Once you go trail...you never go back. Like Adam and plenty of other say below...get hills into the legs (loads of vert/hill repeats). Go slow to go long as well. Forget pace...go with heart rate if anything (i.e. 180 minus your age). Also practice power walking hills and settle on a method that works for you (i.e. hands on quads or hips). If allowed then use poles and practice with them. Go well Nick and make sure your nutrition/hydration is on point for 30 hours.

      Idk, if Nick runs in his Altras without doing any elevation training he is going to almost 100% drop out. Altras are good for shorter runs but Ultra Trail runs beat up your legs enough on shoes with cushion.

    Very cool about Leadville! You can simulate high altitude training with breath holds. I recommend the work of Patrick McKeown and his book The Oxygen Advantage.
    Working on strengthening my gluteus medius and minimus muscles really helped avoid groin pains during my first ultra and in future events. What caused some pain though were my feet. I had done a few marathons and was an avid hiker, but ultras with all the rocks, perhaps stairs, and generally rougher terrain, puts added strain on the feet. Your ice ball massage in the mornings is a good. Walking, running, and jumping rope barefeet a little but often has helped me too.

    Nick to help prep for your elevation do a progressive and regressive ladder track and bleacher run .
    Ours takes about 2 to 3 hours going from 400 meter to 3200 meter back down to 400 meter.
    For ever 100 meter is the amount of times around the bleachers 400 meter 4 circuits on bleachers of up and down all steps. That will give you plenty of elevation and all laps around track are 80 % of race pace.
    Great way to build your cardio and alternate between running and eventual power hiking.
    Beat of luck in Leadville.

    Leadville is for sure on my to do list. I picked up ultra running a couple years ago. It is mostly just a past time for me as I have never actually competed in a sanctioned ultra race. But the trails here in Germany are fantastic. Look forward to the upcoming videos Nick.

    You should check out the lamps you wear sort of like a Fanny pack. Gives a ton of light near your feet without having to keep your head down all the time

    Man after coming back to Austin from a 4 day hike near Leadville (that some people run in one day) it is a whole other beast. Make sure to go early to acclimate! You got it my guy.

    You can use a stair master or incline treadmill to hammer out some climbing. That’s what I did and it was a big help.
    Do make note, that descending will also take its toll on the quads. Don’t take downhills too fast or you will blow your legs out before 50 miles.

    I think you really need to focus on some vert workouts, treadmill at 15% power hiking. In the ultra game does not matter if you can run 900 pace for 10 miles if your spent. Learn to hike uphill, run flats and downhill. I don’t want to be negative but Nick seems slightly naive to the ultra game. I hope he reads these comments and takes them to heart.

      So true man, Nick if you see this, PLEASE FOCUS ON YOUR VERTICAL GAIN, otherwise you won't be able to "run" on that race, also 7 weeks is very little time span imo. U got the mind set Nick

    I was training for a 100km run with 4000m of elevation (13400ft). My 3 peak training weeks all had 4000m+ of elevation. The only thing I was missing out on was time on my feet, more runs that were 8+ hours and at night. Also figuring out nutrition is huge, you won't be eating gels the whole time. I was eating ham sandwiches, sushi, potatoes as well as gels/candy.

    Always an amazement to see the sweat soaked cap just drippin. I totally agree with surrounding yourself with positivity and engaging thoughts/content & people. I find it hard though to find those positive/motivated people. There are billions of people all around the world, yet so many us probably meet less than 1% of those billions.

    If you're really looking for a challenge do the full lake Georgetown loop starting from Tejas camp - it's about 27mi total and 2000 ft. of elevation gain. Probably the best single trail for long distance training in the greater Austin area!

    Weigh in tomorrow. Regardless of what the scales say I am just happy I have finally made a habit of getting after it everyday and I know that will continue. I am getting obsessed with reaching my weight goal but understand it will take time. P&L

    Go west just an hour and run in the hill country. We have huge hills here at Canyon Lake that will get you the adaptation to climbing and descending. And our heat and humidity is equal to 3-4K feet of elevation!
