Getting back into running after a lengthy surgical recovery (and some inertia/laziness) and it's so refreshing to watch a running video that isn't focused on speed and pace. This was so motivating and really makes me want to explore some local trails.
Fergus and Johnnie.. firstly apologies for the lack of comments. Your new series is simply brilliant and superbly filmed and edited. Equally, as always deeply inspiring. The trust and friendship between you two is obvious. A success in every sense. What Johnnie is doing this year is unbelievable. Good luck. Another lesson from this is nature and being outdoors. As I have said before nature and being outside in all weathers and all seasons is literally my life saver. Mental and physical health are in unison with outdoor life and activities. Thank You Both. Deeply appreciated.
Trail running and cross-country running is the only kind of running I actually enjoy. I used to live near a fitness trail that was a 1 mile loop through the woods with various exercise stations spread along the length. The trail itself had many ups and downs and there were tree roots throughout, but that's what made it so fun. It was almost a mini-game keeping my eye on the trail for tree roots. Sometimes I'd skip the exercise stations and just see how fast I could run the trail without tripping over a root 😄
So glad you made the point on pacing up the hills. I've taken to trail running recently. Yesterday did 10km in 1.5hrs in the Lomonds. I'm 122kg, but still felt bad that a full 30 mins of the climb was spent walking, and the pace seemed so slow compared to my road time.
Perfect timing. I went on my first ever trail run in Snowdonia yesterday. I’m normally a road runner, so it really humbled me and got me to stop thinking about pace and just soak up the views. I definitely want to incorporate more in the future!
I was there too, like you first time - it was insane lol. 42K road race probably equals to 21K of Trail Running; both in calories burned and overall effort.
I ran my first half marathon yesterday due to your videos! It was a trail half marathon in Cornwall %70 hills kicked my ass, only been running for 4 weeks now 💪
54m here, Ive only ever been an on and off road jogger over the years, this year I had built up to ~12km with a height gain of about 140m, I live in Dublin but I am about 30min drive from the Wicklow mountains so starting on part of the Wicklow Way, did my second one last Sat around 10K , with a height gain of around 450m , jogged and walked. Its a rush frankly, great fun , some killer inclines, running downhill is great, easier than walking downhill, or running downhill on concrete, so when at the half way point Ive done 3/4 of the work plus I arrive at the finish strong compared to a normal city run where the last couple of K are always tough. I see it as a real treat and privilege to be able to do this. Targeting 15km with about 600m incline and Ill be happy. Got a pair of poles to try next time to see if I can speed up the parts where jogging isnt feasible. Hoping for some great cardio gains!
The one thing I can say that was games changing for me in terms of endurance was the treadmill. It was boring, I was hard to run for more than 20 minutes. I kept at it, adding more time and more time, going a bit faster and farther on every run. Once I did my first race, it was SO much easier to run a half and full marathon. It was so much for enjoyable that I kept forgetting I was running. I actually had things to look at 😂. I was able to drop my 2:05 half down to a 1:33 in 6-months with a lower average heart rate, too. Next goal is a sub-3 marathon 💪🏻
2 points - 1: kudos to the cameraman for making it to the top of the hill before you guys did ;-) 2: come and run on Crete - the roads are just as varied at the trails. In the blink of an eye you can go from brand new seal to some huge potholes. The pavements have all sorts of obstacles in them, like trees, holes, rubbish bins, fallen fruit (slippery when stepped on) loose flagstones, cats that refuse to move, and more distractions than you can poke a stick at. Not to mention half of your running will be on the actual road (with the cars) because the footpath is un-navigable. Then you've got the roads that go past the beaches full of tourists in their bikinis..... Some sod has put a bunch of posts and stuff right in the middle of the path, so you take your life in your hands if you take your eyes off the path. And if you want trails - i live in the centre of Chania. There are some nice easy trails just 4kms from my house in one direction. Head in another direction for about 5kms and you have a huge hill to climb (4kms steep uphill) with sheep and goats and little old churches in the middle of nowhere, and fantastic views all the way up of the city, and then once you get to the top, fantastic views of the mountains - where there are even more trails. It's a happy place to be a runner. Best of luck for the jungle. I loved it out there ;-)
Seriously miss the Pentlands can’t wait to return if only for a few days in July, my prescription will be severely visits before moving around the town. Thankyou guys for sharing this special place to me. Best wishes
Trail running is great for training. However, if I am doing a race I prefer road running, I race better when there's a crowd and there's a festive atmosphere especially if I'm trying to go for a PR. There is something about "playing to a crowd" that does this for me (not that the crowd is there for YOU necessarily but people cheering and holding up signs and stuff at races does give me energy). Also road running is easier logistically to train for since I don't have to try to find a trail to run and can just start my run from my front door. That said I still prefer trail running for training.
My concern in trail running, and lack of doing so, has been ankle injuries, which I've now had 2 of. 1 of which was on trail bc a small ditch i didn't see. I find that I have to run so much slower to be safe and ultimately I am still at risk. But maybe I'm not doing enough mobility and conditioning work to prevent this. I'd love to hear your thoughts and the measures you take to safely run trails - conditioning, which shoes you use for trails vs road, do you generally run them slower (besides the inclines you mention that you often walk), etc... While I live in a bigger city, we technically have quite a few trail runs here in San Francisco that i could utilize (though I am perfectly happy running in Golden Gate Park which is beautiful and has a mixture of hills on paved paths). So it's definitely something I can start doing to mix up my runs On a side note, I've been so happy finding you, you're training videos, and your hybrid training lifestyle. I had been increasing my own hybrid training for a while (for Spartan races) but wasn't seeing a lot of information online for mixed training outside of observation race people, but was finding great success on my own (even with doubts and judgement from many athletes around me who like their one sport lane or who only lift). Finding you has been incredibly validating and useful in pushing myself to the next level of the mixed athletic performance that I currently am pursuing and valuing. Plus, you come as such a genuine and healthy guy who deserves a platform.
Nice video guys. I am heading to Edinburgh at the end of August from Vancouver Canada. I am looking forward to exploring the trails. What trail did you run in this video.
Agree with everything said in this video. Trails are a great way to get away from pace and metrics and just immerse yourself in the surroundings. I’m just starting to really get into trails after a decent amount of road running. Hopefully some big goals to work towards in 2024/25 👍💥
Massive trail convert since the Brighton Trail marathon last year 😁 I’d say 90% of training and events have been off road since! (Massive Metallica fan too - seeing them twice at Download this year 👏)
That's one my favourite running segments: Flotterstone to Turnhouse hill in the Pentlands. Pretty runnable as long as you're not lumbering out in a weighted vest 😂
You guys rock! I just started training here in mid-Missouri USA for my first trail run at the end of August. Small potatoes compared to what you are doing. I did enjoy your video however!
I definitely like trail running more for shorter runs. I find the variety really makes me focus and push harder. But if I'm gonna be running for longer than an hour, I like the consistency of a relatively level road or track. I enjoy the meditative quality of the repetition
I used to run consistently, and when I stopped....life all around got worse. I don't cope with things the same way. I still walk and lift weights, but I miss running and I need to get back to it.
I love trail, but don't go unprepared as sometimes you get to some very technical places...it is not like showing up at some random marathon, as at some point you might get lost in the forest, no signal, high slopes, heat and you really need strong ankles...It really depends where you are from, but never underestimate it...
Are you wearing the Tracker Decon FG2? Just got them today, and I was considering using them for trail running, but they feel a bit heavy for that. Will give it a go, but might stick with my Altra Lone Peaks for trails.
I love cycling off road, it's just so much better for all the simple reasons you mentioned, but also to get away from cars and to a place where only people and animals are. From watching videos like yours I've kinda wanted to start running, but I know it'd only be trail running and on places I walk the dog. The sound of off road is just nicer underfoot and under tyre.
Oi leave us crossfitters alone. Joking aside I have definitely awoken a hidden addiction to trail running after prepping and completing the clean fatigue Fan Dance......great content!
i've been wanting to get into trail running for ages and this video might just have been the extra motivation i needed! got my first half marathon on sunday then onto ultra marathon prep 🫡🫡cheers legends love your work!
i live in a very mountainous state in the US and I feel this was my wake up call to finally get after the trails

When Jonny says 'Yeah, I did that ' in reference to when Fergus pointed out the sun came out as he was speaking was low key comedy gold
5:20 literally a rainbow forming in the background as you're talking lol. Couldn't be more serendipitous

@@jmarinotripp240 probably 4 weeks of trail running
@Ferris Brown but this video only uploaded today.. maybe he got inspiration from his triathlon/ultra marathon video just like me

This is Flotterstone to Turnhouse hill in the Pentlands about 10 minutes from Edinburgh. Excellent trail/fell run route.

Personally, I mostly run on roads because I have no choice but my whole motivation lies in being fit for the trails.
Great video like always.
Love the video and the Thrudark gear!
such a great video, loved the walking and speaking very cool
The visual of Jonny casually talking and Fergus absolutely dying at 14:20 got me 🤣🤣
Great content, keep it up

I would add that trail running affords me the opportunity to practice tripping over roots.
impressive decor and impressive goals! Still rocking the Vivo on the trail runs?
I tried trail running a few times. It always turns into a trail walk back to the car.
Great video! Can I please ask what shoes you use for trail running? I have seen you in Altras and Vivos?
Trails are so much more forgiving on the body and that immersion in nature is so satisfying
are trails actually more gentle compared to roads?
@@io-rj6skvaried cadence, mostly softer terrain. Varied movement patterns would cause less stress on joints
I hate running outside, treadmill only guy 😂 I’ll head out some time this week, you’ve inspired me.
Pentlands are phenomenal for training and being 15 mins from Edinburgh (or less).
Big Johnny P 🙌🏼
Awesome video guys 💪Where did you get these weight vests from?
What’s the name of this park ?? Couldn’t quite make it out. Going to Edinburgh in May and I really want to check it out.

When he started taking the sun came out… when you started talking a rainbow came out😂😂😂. Awesome video as usual!
very inspirational for people like me
Awesome video lads! The weighted hill-rep race looked like a laugh 😅🤣
Lol, all my running is "weighted"! I just think it will make me stronger.
Does anyone have this route on Strava that they could share? Looks great.
Good luck Johnny what a guy👍👌
What fleece is Jonny wearing in the beginning? It looks so comfy that i want one too :D
The best Duo in the game 😎. Fergus….how “old” is Johnny ?
What shoes do you recommend for trail running? Just bought my first pair of vivos but the impact is pretty brutal, that just something to get used to?
How do you find doing big mileage in the vivo's?
The excuse to stop and walk is awesome in trail running.
Surely running in packs would have been more specific training for the jungle than weighted vests?
Why weighted vests?
Hope we get some coverage of Johnny's ultra adventures! The idea of 250km in humid bug infested jungle is absolutely horrid
5:30 there is literally a rainbow behind them
Do you live in Edinburgh?
The spice of my wife lolll
Lmao, I heard that line and scrolled to see your comment 1 second later when I came to check if I heard that correctly
