      I don't have a shop, but I would end up doing the same if I did. We only had one cat at a time, so it was always "the cat." Our other pets were that way too. It's "the little horse" or "the black chicken." Though our beef cows got named. Go figure.

    I am certainly not a blacksmith, would never claim to be such a craftsman either. I have been aware of something that is a common necessity with all walks of careers and jobs. Hands. What an absolute blessing our hands are and will become. I see his old tools in his shop, hands made those. I see his cookware, hands constructed them. I often find myself in the kitchen after work making dinner with my wife. My hands have a shade of saw dust on them while hers are neatly done and clean. Her hands have cultivated our gardens and given hair cuts to our son and daughter. My daughters hands have created wonderful art work that she shares with family and friends. Our younger son’s hands have stirred up mischievous encounters that are expected of a four year old. For all that can be said about hands, I am, forever gracious. The roughness of their skin, the imperfections and the strength that I ask of them everyday is demanding. I hold my family with them, smash them with a hammer occasionally but they’re still there ready for whatever I need next. Seems weird to speak about hands in such a manner, but man, what a wonderful extension they are.

      A properly seasoned cast iron or carbon steel skillet is every bit as "non-stick" as a teflon coated pan, and the seasoning is hard enough that you can use metal utensils on it. Best of all, if you do manage to ruin seasoning, it can be fixed. Once you scratch the coating on a teflon pan, you can either live with the scratch or throw it away; there's no fixing it.

    Power hacksaws are great, if you break a tooth you can still use the blade, just offset the workpiece a bit and carry on, also the blades are a lot cheaper than bandsaw blades. They are slower than bandsaws and tend to wander across the floor if you operate them at high speeds. You can still find them used for reasonable prices.

      Living in a much colder area than EC fire places are more work than they are worth IMHO. Buying wood was almost the same price or more as heating oil for my jet furnace. Then I was spending 10 min a day walking to the pile and splitting took half a day. Cutting it myself was way more expensive by the time I paid truck fuel and the lost day and permit. My insurance also freaked out when they found out about a fireplace that could have gas around.

    This is the best way I have found to check your steaks.
    Hold your hand palm up open and relaxed and, with your other hand, feel the pad between your thumb and your wrist, that firmness is a rare steak. Now touch your thumb and index finger together, that's medium rare. Medium is thumb and middle finger, and I think you can see the pattern from here.

      @davec.3198 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stagecoachfarmforge Just to be clear..I wasn't knocking you at all.
      Look into cellular manufacturing. Set up each area to do something specific. Like when you are making a spatula. Set up an area made to just make the handle and then one for the flat part. Set up a jig for the flat part and a vise that does just that. You'll find that walking around your shop from end to end to get this and then get that, doesn't add anything to your product, it just makes you work harder for it. Movement will waste your time, make you work harder and provide no more value to your customer. Of course, time not spent walking around or setting up tools, means you can make more product.
      Just some thoughts from a guy that got paid well to make factories better.

      Well E.C. loves a good multi tool. I kinda thought that it was fitting for him.

    Thats beautiful cook wear. I could see you and Si making some forks, knifes and plates to complement the setup.

    Roy from Christ centered iron works also makes skillets and cookware, maybe they could colab, Roy also selling the blanks for the cookware. And to check the doneness of a steak, two ways, by how soft it is when you move it, or by cutting a slit in the middle and looking at the center

    Thanks guys -- got a real kick out of that flying press, as I used an acme-threaded press for many years in a different trade. Even though it was maybe only 20% the size of this one, that press was a beast!

    That sure is one sharp leatherman to be able to cut steak like that. Id like to learn how to get mine that sharp one day. Awesome video as always! Ive always been really fond of carpentry and blacksmithing and you have a great way of telling it like it is. I now do plumbing and gasfitting and ive always been a little quirky so i see shades of phil in myself. Awesome series. Im glued to it

    Join your thumb and index finger and with then touching and press the fleshy bottom part of where your thumb meets your palm. Thats around a rare steak feel. And as you move your thumb to the next finger this spot on your palm should have less and less softness. The less softness the more done your steak. Personally think the first cut of that steak looked right on. 👍🏻
