I think that doubling up on the plywood can only help. Just don't forget to seal all of the end grain on the plywood before tabbing it in ... bilge water will wick into plywood really fast, so a good penetrating epoxy coat is essential followed by generous coats of bilge paint to perfect the seal. Best way to template is cheap pieces of disposable wood glued together with a hot glue gun (many you tube videos on this) ... you just cut up various lengths and work you way along gluing each piece to the last across the boat -- then trace the outline on the plywood and make slight adjustments to the final product once in place. You guys are killing it!! Keep up the good work!!

Marina noted that they are ‘innocent’ and I think I agree BUT they are not daunted. She and Stuart think about problems then have a go and are making progress. I like the minimum cost approach an dumpster diving which will also help them achieve their goals. Their greatest asset is the ‘can do’ approach and positive attitude. Keep up the good work team!

For the plywood, suggest that you treat this material with penetratingly epoxy to resist rot and increase the strength.

Buy a sheet of door skin. Rip it into 2" strips. Get a hot melt glue gun. Cut the strips to fit across the beam in two or three places, depending on the depth of the bilge. Make sure the ends are pointed and the points contact the bilge where you need them to. Cut strips with pointed ends to glue vertically with the points touching the curve of the bilge. Lay the template on the plywood and mark the points. String a batten along the points. Mark a line along the batten. Cut your template. Perfect fit every time. As to color, I like a semi-gloss white with the natural wood trim varnished. The contrast is nice and with the natural wood and white it provides a warm, nautical environment.
That seems to be the standard.
Great tip on the door panels, I'll see what's in the shed before buying more wood.

Template: we use the spline and cardboard method. Great job. thought grey looked OK and the double plywood stringer should be extra strong. Stew, your a marvel with the sander.

Cracking on well guys… how about using strips of door skin ply or stir sticks and glue gun to make your templates around complex curves 🤷♂️ ? You’ll get there 👍🏻

Ribs go across the hull, stringers are longitudinal forms that are laid in line with the keel.
That piece you put in is a rib.

For me I like to have light and bright.
For the white wash use much (!) more paint thinner. Apply with a cloth. Layer after layer until you are satisfied. Go for it 😀 💪💪

I used to paint houses for a living and I always found that just applying a solid finish is easier in the end than any kind of faux finish. The result is also generally more durable, from a practical and taste point of view. Maybe you could just match the off-white that you already have in the boat? Or pick a nice warm white and eventually refinish all the white. You two are doing so well! Hope the weather warms up soon!
Also is you like the graininess of wood make the last strokes with a wide brush to leave long brush strokes in the finish coat. I’ve done it on paneling and like the look. Leave the wood finish on the trim if you want.
Hi. Re making bulkheads and fitting have a look at the Duracell project. He’s very good with glass bulkheads and epoxy. To do the bulkhead templates use a hot glue gun and battens to get the shape from a reference piece. Keep going!

When I have installed interior bulkheads I made templates from strips of thin (3mm), cheap plywood. You cut the strips maybe 4 cm wide and hot glue them together to make up the required shape. Adjust the length of the strips to get a decent fit. Final detailed adjustment is done by sanding the edges of the strips. Once you figure it out the method is very quick and easy. One sheet of the cheap plywood will make quite a few templates since you can break up a template after you use it and reuse the strips.
One point of nomenclature. Stringers go for and aft and floors go athwartships - across the boat. What you put in is a floor that the cabin sole will sit on. Classic boat terminology often doesn't make sense. For example, in your v-berth (forward cabin) the wood strips on the inside of the hull are called Ceiling and what is called ceiling in a house or apartment is called "overhead".
As far as the paint goes, I like what is called Herreshoff style interior which is white/light painted bulkheads with varnished wood trim. That really brightens up the interior.
Mr. Dunn's coment here is right on the money in every respect. For videographic examples of using thin strips and hot glue to make templates, you might check out Aladino's work on Sailing Magic Carpet channel. Aladino is a professional boatwright who is in the midst of a major refit on a Cape George 36. For glassing in floors and stringers also see the Expedition Evans channels early episodes.
I appreciate Mr. Dunn's use of the proper nautical terminology. Another name for the forward cabin is the forecastle (fo'c's'l).
I agree with Mr. Dunn on the paint, as well. If you want to brighten up down below but retain some of the varnished wood finish, the Herreshoff style is the best way to go. Paint the plywood bulkheads but keep the solid wood trim a natural finish.
You two are so scrappy I have the utmost admiration for you. Keep plugging away at this hard work despite the fact that you barely have a pot to piss in. Much respect to your humility and stalwartness.
I love Stu's optimistic approach to everything.

hi guys, Stringers and ribs, really what you are fitting are ribs, the Stringers run fore and aft and act a bit like floor joists in a house. To make the templates, you need a glue gun so you can stick pieces of cardboard together, that way you know you have the exact contours of the boat. 😊

You should replace one stringer at a time for the boat doesn’t loose his shape, even if you thing won’t bend its receiving upper forces from outside stands. Good luck and it will be very useful to watch Math on how to vacuum bag epoxy parts on the sailboat on the channel Duracell project.😊

Hi . For your parterns use soft paper on the old structures before you smashed them 😊 . Trace with Pencil, fold, eventualy cut. Animo y suerte !

Others may have suggested this but here goes anyway:
You can use a cheap pencil compass/ protractor and scribe the edge onto the cardboard with a bit more control than your ruler and felt pen.
Or, make a templet with door skin pieces 1/16" thick, or stiff cardboard and hot glue connected each piece to the next following the bottom contour .
Seal the wood with epoxy prior to joining them esp. the bottom side

I like those gloves! Sorry I don't have any better suggestions for making templates. I think I would have done pretty much what you were doing. Sometimes you can use the old parts you are removing as a template, but that is not always possible. Your new stringer looks pretty solid and should be very strong. Cheers and keep up the good work.

Coat all the surfaces with epoxy to seal the wood then glue together with epoxy. then fiberglass all the stringers to make a solid base. and do this with bulkheads to make a strong and stable boat. you can use this system to do all your cabinets so they are protected from moisture. and you can either paint or stain the epoxy what ever way you desire
A layer of epoxy is a must.

You two are an inspiration to us all. You work well together and I love the can do attitude. My humble NZ opinions. Hi-gloss walls will brighten the spaces and be easier to wipe clean. Cardboard templates always worked for me. Check that the cradle pads do not distort the hull inwards when the old frames are cut out. Once the new frames are glued in, Thats the shape of the hull. When glueing in the new frames, brush all the edges with unthickened resin to seal them before the thick glue is applied. Plywood will wick up water very quickly especially in the bilge area.

Fab work, as always, you two. I see a lot of people are not too fond of your whitewash finish, but it's YOUR boat, and if YOU like it, that's all that matters, honestly. The transverse (athwartships) "stringers" you are replacing are caller "floors". Stringers run fore-and-aft. Good idea to double up the thickness of the floors, they will add strength to Seabird. If you don't already, look at Sampson Boat Co's TH-cam channel, they often make templates and you might get ideas from their work restoring an old wooden yacht. You're doing well, good luck and best wishes always!

Use paint sticks and a hot glue gun, I've done so many templates this way, works perfect and fast. ..
Don’t worry too much in getting an exact fit on the shape of your replacement floor. Small gaps filled with epoxy is more than good enough. Some would say that a small gap is better as it prevents hard spots and potentially places that would delaminate in the future.

Hi, we had the same probleem in our sailingboat. It was all pretty dark wood in the cabin. We decided to paint part of it a kind of vanIlla kind of white. The result was amazing. The cabin became a lot lighter and brighter and we never regretted the decision to paint. We did a solid color, because we had so many different colours of wood. And now it is just the nice wood and the painted wood.

I would apply some resin on Your "stringers'" playwood before installing.
Just soak it using paint brush, to make it waterproof all around.
Its a bilge, so water will be there at some point.
In case of future delamination or cracking, the ply will be more protected.
Good to do this on every wooden framing in your new floor, cabinets, settees etc

I've got a nice finish before using liming wax, which is a white wax. It will go into the grain. Gives a kind of washed-out driftwood kind of look. You can use a brass wire brush to pull out some of the grain beforehand to make the look more pronounced.

I really love the white washing.. . It makes it look more open and clean. As for the stringer.. you can never be too solid. Great work both of you.. looking forward to seeing the inside fished.
*Don't worry about the wood cabinet color. All of that can be done after the structural work is done. Yes it's nice to see what it will look like. In the end, you can decide later to keep or change.

If you purchase thin sheets of wood called door skin veneer and cut it into long strips about 1 inch or 2 inches wide you can use the strips with hot glue to make a quick template of your stringers. They will be light weight and the exact measurements that you need. Transfer that pattern directly on to your marine plywood, trace it out and cut your piece. You might find something similar to use in the bin. I'd check there first. 😁 We like the free, recycled stuff. 🤗 ⛵Cheers!

About the cabin's wall: Wood is the most traditional in boats, however, as your boat isn't that big one, a white wall would give you a feeling of amplitude and a clean space.
I restore old motorcycles for the satisfaction of giving old machines a new life.I think you must feel a bit that way too. It's always slow work, but we'll worth it in the end. Keep up the good work.
Use thin furring strips (like paint stir sticks) and a hot glue gun for creating templates.

It has been the 'Elephant in the room' for quite a while now... stepping in and out of your 'bilge' for goodness knows how long can't have been much fun! Work looks stoic and awesome to me as always... learning-as-you go is with no question, the name of the game! Your 'comments crew' will have you covered, no doubt... read some very knowledeable advice down here since your much deserved popularity has grown... and keeps growing!
P.S. I thought as soon as you mentioned the wood being a bit too opressive... that you might consider doing all the bulkheads/vertical eyeline surfaces in white... front and back kind of thing! That traditional clean white and beautiful dark wood is simply timeless!

I watch several boat channels. I really enjoy this one. As far as the structural parts. I feel you are doing right with the stringers. They need to be tough. Better than going back and redoing at a later time because you didn’t reinforce the way you are I think a good coat of paint to the interior will make you happier after you finish all of your work.

For templates, set a height and mark every inch or so and then connect the dots. That or use a compass (think about your school geometry set). You will always have imperfections on the fit, but it’s far less expensive to use cardboard from the bin than miles of strips of door skin and tabbed together with hot glue.
