How to remove your keel on a budget

  • I drop the keel on my Ericson 38-200. Issues with stuck keel bolts, difficult access, and a keel that refuses to separate from the hull. I nearly gave up on this project, persistence is key.

It's good to see people learn how to service their own keels. Hopefully it will improve content in the already super expensive yard fees.
Practically its a very simple design and a very heavy job.
    Well done.

As a guy who actually does keels, I am impressed. This is NOT an easy job! As I was watching, I was reliving my learning curve, and all the pain that I had experienced. lol! If you need a little tech support, let me know. I’ll be glad to help save you time/money. (Mike)

Mike, thank you. I wish I'd met you sooner. The keel is back on, but I made a critical error and did not ensure that the keel stub mating surface was perfectly level to the hull. My keel is now ~1.5 degrees off of perfect vertical.

@@himanakai bummer. 1.5 degrees isn’t too bad. How does the boat handle? I usually bed keels with thickened epoxy, after I level the boat. Makes the keel, one with the hull.

@@himanakai when I use the thickened epoxy, I make sure that I have about 3/16” thick between the keel, keelstub,( keelson). Helps make up angular differences.

I am about to do the same on my Sabre 38 MK II - this is an intimidating job. :-)

One of my favourite boats! In retrospect I did not need to fully drop my keel, the bolts were in perfect shape with no signs of water intrusion. It's just hard to know for sure until you do pry the keel off.
Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Get rid of all the extensions much better.

As you say, persistence in key:) Interesting work, my first thought when watching was 'hope he has steel cap boots' if keel comes of completely and goes rogue:) - Building a 36' foot sailboat from scratch so will need some of your patience. Currently posting some videos around the electric motor housing build that will drive it all when eventually done (Link in case interested: th-cam.com/video/wHFoyxXglfY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=99Uuh_tC35Ffx_LO ) - Looking forward to follow your continuation:) Keep the good videos coming!

Thanks for the encouragement! If for any reason that keel slipped off the boat, or the jackstands start to fail, the plan is RUN. I've been pretty light on the protective equipment due to the desert heat, but still making sure to protect my eyes and lungs at all times.
I'm going to check out your boat build, that sounds awesome.

@@himanakai - Ha Ha, RUN sounds like a plan in that scenario:) - I am the worst at protective equipment myself, not long ago since I had to visit the hospital remove a metal splinter from my eye retina from sanding without googles. Luckily no long-term damage done:)
