  • @jkutyna
    @jkutyna 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    The key aspect of what you're calling the 'finger sander' is that it brings all of the fiberglass and epoxy dust back in a very controlled stream towards you. You hold the sander in one hand, and put the vacuum hose right under it and catch everything using your other hand. Unlike a normal radial or disc sander which throws it everywhere. You will not even need a tyvek suit when doing it this way and you can avoid getting fiberglass particles all over the interior of your building or boat.

    • @SailingSeabird
      @SailingSeabird  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This part of the project is a very dusty affair.

    Turn the water tanks around and cut holes through the rib for the fittings then you can have the fuel tank very close to the water tanks. Beware of getting too close to the engine beds as you may need the space for the engine/belts/pulleys. Enjoying the videos

    • @SailingSeabird
      @SailingSeabird  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      That’s actually how the old ones were installed. We were hoping we didn’t have to drill our brand new rib though… so we were trying to figure out a different way. But it might have to be like you’re suggesting. We’ll see 🤔

    A really good way for making templates and moulds is to lay down polythene sheeting on the area you want a mould of, cover in expanding foam, pull the sheeting over and press down with a sheet of plywood.

    Many young couples break up while renovating an old house, while living in it, can't imagine it would be any easier on an old boat, try to do other things as well, at least one or two things a week that you enjoy and look forward to, you can bring the camera, or leave it behind, you're a great story teller, we would watch, but also understand that you guys need alone time.
    The fittings on the water tank can also be in the side of the tank, you can weld the old holes, if you can plastic weld, or maybe find the correct glue, for that particular kind of plastic, or just two stainless washers and a bolt with some polyurethane gue in between, you could even drill a big hole in the floor support, so it doesn't take up any room, you might need the room later, so better not waste it, and please give everything a generous coat of topcoat, it will make it so much easier to clean later.
    As always, great work.

    Matt at the Duracell project keeps a screwtop 5 gallon bucket partially filled with acetone that he keeps his fiberglass tools in, to keep them clean between uses. Seems to work well. You might try to query him about this practice, but that might help you to permit multiple uses of otherwise unusable tools.
    Keep up the good work!!

    I like using those chip brushes for chasing bubbles in fibreglass. I just trim the bristles shorter so they are stiffer. Everyone argues from time to time it is being able to get over it and move on that is important. The thin roller is for corners. I would watch everyday if you are willing to put in all the work to get the videos up. The tanks look like that would be a great position.

    I understand doing a video each day would be more work, much more work then you'd like, however I'm up for it. A little bit of what you fancy does you good as the old saying goes. I have worked in restoring before and usually taking old out is easier then rebuilding again, in this case it looks like the opposite might be the case. I honestly believe in, both your abilities to see this restoration through. You might find having a little break from what you're doing would help, to recharge the batteries so to speak, especially over Christmas, then come back re-energised. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us all. See you both next week. xx

    That is a ton of work you've done this week. Stop and a have a walk around every now & then, whether together or alone, it helps to keep things in proportion. Making a daily video sounds like adding even more work to what appears to be an already heavy workload. Nice idea, but when the wind is howling, it's freezing and you don't have your own hammer, getting anything done is significant. Life can always throw an unexpected curveball, so whatever else, remember to enjoy yourselves!

    • @SailingSeabird

    please use a piece of plastic over the epoxy when doing fillets ,tabbings etc. you make so much work for yourselves having to sand so much. any plastic even a shopping bag will do, thicker helps you get smoother less wrinkles. but once you lay up a fillet lay a plastic over and smooth with you hand fingers etc and leave in place until its gone off. Once he epoxy is hard the plastic just peals off leaving a perfect smooth surface no sanding WOW. just try it you will love it.

    That material holding the shower pan in is ‘syntactic’ foam or filler. It’s a pourable or ‘slop-able’ made from resin and filler, filler can be a mix of microballons, glass beads, calcium carbonate powder, ground up fiberglass , even dry play sand depending of application. The resin is polyester resin for easy of working , faster cure ,cost and availability. Other option are usually a lot more expensive, but can save weight when that’s important

    If you can find a bucket with a sealable lid, put some acetone in it and keep your glassing tools in that.

    • @Cheers_Warren
      @Cheers_Warren 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see somebody sent you a roller pack with the nice handles.
      The odd one is for tight corners , almost useless as tight corners are bad . Then you forget to clean it!
      You have to really clean then well and dry , sitting in acetone the resin will sink to bottom and cure on the rollers. Just dissemble each time and reassemble just before using and check for easy rolling , I’ve spent years using them daily it’s the best way and doubly so with sticky epoxy !
      Cheers Warren

    If you can do it, a daily vlog would be lovely. Hey, argumentative days come and go; couples often have different views to solve the same problem, but I'm sure you two are fine and will continue to be fine. Just remember never to go to bed angry 🙂 Good luck and all the best, as always!

    Hello again, I know you want to get it done as fast as possible, but sometimes working fast in the cold may result in breaking something of hurting your finger or whatever. I just thought a little heat might make it more comfortable for Marina, she looked like she was totally bundled up. Cheers and your work is looking goood.

  • @user-tr2yx2yp4q

    Hello Stu and Marina. I am wondering if you two have considered getting a small indoor kerosine heater to help some with the cold? Forty years ago I used one when we went "camping" on our boat in the winter. It was very safe and helped a lot. Ok keep up the good work and don't get sick. Ciao.

    I've got time to watch daily, have you got time to produce it daily? I enjoy every episode. I must start from the beginning and watch all of them. A suggestion. Would polyurethane foam be any use to support the fuel tank? It will spread the load over the hull and support the tank. Glass it in afterwards to protect it.

    A lot of channels do a daily live vlog. It's a great idea. Yes, working in close proximity with your partner will generate frustration & irritation. Just remember not to take it all too seriously. After all... If you lost all your worldly possessions you'd still have each other and that's far better than squabbling over silly stuff. 😊
