HUNTING FOR MY LOST DRONE!

  • A few weeks ago, during episode 163 of Finnegan's Garage, I lost control of my DJI Mavic Mini 2 drone and lost it. I didn't know whether I crashed it into my local lake or into the woods next to the water. After looking at the short clip of video that streamed to my iPhone 11 plus, before losing connection with the drone, I figured the drone crashed into the lake and was lost forever. However, after Chris Read took a closer at the footage, he was convinced the drone hit a tree branch and landed on the shore. Given this new hope, we decided to return to the lake and search for the drone a week after losing it.
    Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Want to help support this channel? please visit my website and buy some clothing or stickers. thanks!

      @mainmanmustard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @John Dillermand the only good parts left are the cheapest parts on the drone. All the electrics have been compromised, so for an aircraft, they are useless even if they do work. I have a Phantom 4 that spent 30 seconds in a pool. Dried it out and took it in for service. Spent a couple hundred on getting it working again, strangely DJI said nothing about water damage and I told them nothing of its last flight. Got it back and 10 minutes into its first flight it dropped out of the sky. I assumed that could be a possibility so I never had big plans for it. If the big ones worth saving could fail, nothing from the cheapest ones are worth saving.

    • @mainmanmustard
      @mainmanmustard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @John Dillermand it can all fail at any time after getting wet. It isn’t worth a dime. The shell and arms are worth $40. DJI nor any of their repair partners will buy anything that has gotten wet. It’s not worth the time and energy to try to sell a ruined drone. Realistically if your that broke that you can’t afford the cost of a new shell and you are looking for a waterlogged one to salvage the shell from, you really shouldn’t have spent money on a drone.

    When dipping a drone: unplug battery asap with it still under water. Open it up and remove RF shield plates, rinse with distilled water, then wash in isopropyl alcohol. Place in a warm place with good airflow. Wait for a few days and power it up. Will work in most cases even though DJI drones are real bitches when it comes to water damage :)

      looks like it powered up but couldnt connect to the radio i bet the recever is toast it stayed on in the lake up to the battary going flat dji crap normally shuts down on contact with water what you said to do is the same as i do with my rigs if and when they get wet

    • @tomengman
      @tomengman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mr18031967 yeah, it’s kinda odd it stayed on for so long.. and yeah, the reciever is likely dead but equally likely it’s the main board not booting past something like a sensor, but might just be the multiplexers shorting out and in that case might be bypassable. Seen it and fixed it on a Mavic Pro by skipping wifi functionality, dunno what actually shorts and makes them burn to a crisp, but sometimes they do .. aaand all this is one of many reasons I now prefer fpv quads :)

    The first thing I would have done with it, given that it was underwater for a week, would be to soak it in destilled water (or dryer water, cheaper) to get rid of anything that is NOT water, and THEN give it the rice treatment. Water isn't bad for electronics; the stuff that is in that water is what is bad for electronics.

      A trip thru a dishwasher to remove contaminants(no soap) then distilled is how we recovered electronic boards at the casino after they had drinks spilled on them for months... occasionally had to repair a corroded trace from the cigarette tar/liquid eating it... or replace a leaded component from the same issue. Dried them at 130F in a modded toaster oven for 24 hours to drive out any remaining water

    AS a retired TV repairman and occasional cell phone and tablet repair done at home, your best bet was ALCOHOL to clean it, and not contact cleaner- Most likely the boards inside are smoked from hitting the water while powered up and then sitting there for days till the battery went dead- you could try taking it all apart, cleaning all the boards and connectors with alcohol and a soft old used toothbrush, then put the boards in a tupperware with uncooked dry rice for several days (left outside in the hot sun) and hope for something? if it actually beeped when your buddy put the battery in, I give it a 50/50 chance it's just dirty corroded connectors at this point
