Reviving An Old Drag Boat With An LS Swap!

  • This week on Finnegan's Garage Ep. 147, you get to see my Cousin Randy's 1976 Rogers Bonnevill TR jet boat. You may have seen in on an episode of Roadkill where Freiburger and I towed it to Lake Elsinore, California, then swapped the engine out of a Square Body Chevy and put it into the jet boat. We went boating for a few hours and then took the engine out of the boat, put it back into the truck, then towed the boat back home. The boat sat around for nearly 8 years until recently, when it was used for another episode of Roadkill. Roadkill wasnt too kind to the boat and so it came back to Georgia with a dead engine. In this episode we clean up the mess and swap in a new-to-us LS engine that we robbed from Newbern's Attempted Murder Nova, which he has also sold. As usual, things didnt go as planned but we still had fun and got this boat running again. Briefly. lol

    I have a 1965 18' Rayson Craft V-drive, flat bottom with a Pontiac 400. I got it in 1972 with a 389 Pontiac with Trips and changed the motor to the GTO 400, put on a Holley 850 double pumper and I had the motor redone with the good parts in it. I did some local racing in Oakmont, Pa. and Pittsburgh, Pa. at the 3 Rivers Regatta. Took one first place and one second place. I sold it in 1982. I also put on a bigger oil pan. I Love that look of yours with the motor and the open headers. That Boat should fly.

    So.. Idea for a race. Finnegan in Game Over, Newburn in the Renegade. Standing start there at the lake and then race to your preferred fishing spot on the lake, get your fishing gear out, bait up, and start casting. First one to land a fish and race back to the boat dock at the boat ramp wins.

    Man jet boat talk is awesome. Bought my first jet when I was 17, it was a cheetah I think, deep V 18 foot, 455 Olds, was cool as all get out. My dad was working on a 1974 Wreidt with a 455 olds as well. Little known fact, Michigan used to have a ton of bad ass jet boats. Bay City held the River Roar boat race for years.

    After hearing the story about your folks buying the jet boat it makes sense now. My father drag boat raced back in the early 70's . When I was born in 75' the 1968 Howard flat bottom got put away till 1985.. I can remember as a kid going to get Buttercup. All the gas had turned to varnish. He worked on it and got it ready and off to the river we went. So we are in the water Cruising along and a wall of water came blowing by. You know what that was...yelling at the top of his lungs at me..That's a dam jet..That's when something came out of him and he said hold on. He mashed it dropped the plate and off like a skipping rock we went. He called it clinching some seat cover. When he pulled next to the guy he laid right next to them probably doing somewhere in the 80's...then he puts his arm on me so I didn't flyout..that when he put big tough in it and bye bye..on the way home he told me them dam jets always would get off the line but old buttercup could pass them on the big end. I'm happy you guys have this boat to play with. I think one of your best yet. 👍 Best of luck

    What do you think of v drive boats? With the drive shafts inside the boat? My dad worked on a coworkers once when I was a kid and the guy took me for a ride in it as a reward. It was a pretty memorable experience for me as a young kid.

  • @datasailor8132
    @datasailor8132 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I live up the Chesapeake Bay. Our water is salt water but very weak and brackish this far up. I noticed that Mike is just running a garden hose for cooling. This means that all the water the block sees will be quite cool. Therefore the engine may never come up to temperature. This method is called raw water cooling. We usually run fresh water cooling with a closed circuit radiator like on a car with thermostat, antifreeze, and all. The radiator is really a liquid to liquid heat exchanger which is quite efficient and quite small. The raw water outflow is mixed in with the exhaust.

    Cheap Wal-Mart / Dollar General house candle for the band blade lube. The wax grabs the chips better. Once the wax gets just a bit dirty from cutting ,,it flings off,,taking the stuck chips with it. Tried the Lenox stuff and others. Cheap candle wax for the win. Apply carefully. I remember the Elsinore trip. The good ole days.

    AA/FA Walt's Puffer owner Walt (Wally) Knoch had a flat bottom like this, with a V-Drive setup--he had a L-88 427 in it, Holley 850 double squirter on top--I don't remember where, (maybe Holloway Reservoir?) but that boat ran to 96 mph, in the 1/4 mile, through the traps; on water, that's flyin', especially when you consider the "old school" technology of the mid 1970's, when he did it. Knucklehead that Wally was, (he knew better, didn't he?) he pulled the L-88, and put one of his old 392 Hemi motors in the boat, tunnel ram intake, with two 4500 Dominators (yes, you READ that correctly! 😂😂😂) on top--he never got it to run worth a DARN--HMMM, Wally, it can't POSSIBLY be "excessive fuel" input, CAN it? NAH... LOL Anyway, the "experiment" was short lived, and the L-88 went back IN. The boat DID look impressive as HECK though, with those Dominators sitting sideways on that Hemi mill!!! 🤣🤣

      Yup it’s dumb because I’m sure they could make quite a bit of money just posting them on TH-cam with ads and doing giveaways like every other automotive youtuber.

      Twin turbo an LS3 without gapping the rings? No wonder it blew up. Canceling my MT subscription, I’ve seen enough.

    I had a 16' Baja with a rebuilt Evinrude 150 that was radared at 74 mph with no jacking plates, just a well dialed SS prop , but the tach was bouncing off 9K . All for under $7k. In 1990. Those were the days.

    I like knowing why jet boats need the high capacity oil pans. In fact, I like it so much, I’m not even mad about being told about it twice 😉

    i feel like you could make a little sliding sheet of metal that has matching holes cut in them to put underneath the welding table, that way when you slide the holes out of alignment you can stop stuff from falling through. and if you want the mounting holes back you can just align the metal sheet holes with the welding table holes. kind of the same concept as a slide valve
