About that fence post et al "lumber": Years ago now, we built 4 sided boxes to go over/ around black, nursery, growers pots of the big, tree size for aesthetics out of pallet top and pallet wood. There was about 1"-2" clearance between the plastic pots and their 4 sided outer shells. Each side consisted of a number of boards cut to the same desired length laid out on a table then secured using screws with a piece of vertical 1"x2" used as cleats; except for those secured with some repuposed interior trim, one side by lathe, and what ever else was available. We put 2 cleats per side. Some of these sides had the cleats showing on the the exterior but most were hidden on the inside. We used an ecletic combination of hardware and methods to secure the sides into a box shape. Once completed, we dropped the wood boxes or shells over top our planted growers pots. And yes, these were not particularly structurally sound but they simply needed to look more like a planter from the street. - What we found however is that the R-factor and dead air space (still plenty of air flow through) helped moderate the temperatures of the grow pots allowing for extended seasons and also helped in our hot summer drought. They didn't do much but they did keep the plants happier in the summer amd then we noticed in the other seasons.

Good morning everyone!🌄😊☘️ Bought some of the netting bags last year and it really works, no cabbage worms from the moths. Hope you were safe from this week's storms! It has been a very dry winter here in MN. Less than 10" of moisture. Praying for God to change the weather patterns and send rain or snow. We normally get 36-48" of snow each year. And we had a dry summer last 2 years. Not a good combination. The ground is cracking already, never have I seen that, and I am in my 60's. God bless and take care everyone. ☘️🥰☘️
NW MO here and it has been several dry summers for probably 4 years. The ground has been cracked most of winter. We had a good soaking rain a few days and feel really blessed. I have lost several 2-3 ft diameter trunk trees. They had to be decades old. Now Ill have to have them cut down and shade is gone for the house. Wow, I'm complaining too much, lol. Anyway, I empathizer. 🤗🤗
@@jenniferrevilla5298 Seeing big old trees die is hard! The only other time I have seen cracked ground is in Texas. This is a first for me here. We did not even have a season of ice fishing this year.
I was up late into the night here in Scotland watching Ryan Hall Y’ll and various storm chasers, worrying about you and your livestock. So glad to see a video this morning, although I haven’t watched more than the first 5 seconds of it yet.
Thank you for another inspirational video. We are slowly moving away from traditional gardening to container gardens. I am anxiously awaiting your video on the watering system and how you run yours in the greenhouse and to the containers. God bless!
I live in Northern Minnesota, and I am living vicariously through you guys right now. I cannot wait to start planting. Thank you so much for your videos. Love them.
Last year I used the fruit bags and that was the first year I was able to grow cabbage, and cauliflower without them being riddled with earwigs or cabbage worms. The fruit bag idea was a true blessing.
What a great idea (bags with the wire hoops). I am a new gardener and wanted to just cry when looking at all of the chew holes in my cabbage. I live in upstate NY and still have time to get ready. Happy Gardening!
@@gailoreilly1516 I cried. My cabbages all eaten by pests. No shame on shedding tears for the lost and frustration. Then pick up myself, pat off the dirt on my knees, and go look for solutions.
Lots of work and nice to see you two working together, you are young and full of energy. So beautiful to see and inspiring to hear. America is great, vote for peace in the world, save Ukrain.
Hi! Couldn't help but notice that Big Ol Barn we've only seen the milking station and lean to of. Hey Kevin, how about giving us a tour of the rest of that old barn?
funny but sad story. Last year for the first time ever in all my years of growing I managed to beat the battle of the cabbage moth and I was so proud and happy. Then one morning I went out to inspect my 6 cabbage plants only to find that I may have beat the cabbage caterpillars but the dang mice found my cabbage and ate all the tops off of it making it unusable. Yes it seems Alberta Canada mice like their vegetables just like we do.
I wholeheartedly agree on the insect netting. I tried it last year on our Swiss chard. That was the most beautiful chard I ever grew. I ordered a bunch more nets to cover the rest of our raised beds. We have those dreaded white butterflies that decimated our Kale last year because I didn't cover them. Lesson learned! Cover everything brassica haha Always love your content! Happy growing everyone ❤🥕🥒
I am in Antigua in the Caribbean and the Bermuda grass will grow up and over the weed fabric or into any soil that falls into the fabric. I love using weed fabric in my container garden areas & walkways. Huuuge game changer! I can now focus more on growing food instead of weeding grass.
I use mineral tubs as self-wicking tubs and can fertilize the water as I add water through a pvc pipe. The hole is drilled 4 - 5 inches from bottom, with a drain tile pipe in the bottom of each tub. I got the idea from Gardening with Leon.
I’ve been container gardening for a few years. The wood planters had a plastic liner. Buy Rubbermaid or equivalent. They are fine but cheap bins fall apart after three years. Secondly we had a reservoir in bottom. I don’t know I’d the fabric and dirt became too wet or if I watered too much in 100 degree weather BUT my soil became over saturated and that got higher and higher. I only had 4 inches of regular soil on the top. I’m rejuvenating and replacing the soil. The super saturated soil feels almost like sand. It’s devoid of compost. It did have perlite. 🤷🏼♀️ Third we got white mineral 30 gallon buckets at the feed store. We are filling the bottom with drainage pipe and using some older soil but mostly Hansons compost.
Happy Saturday, I haven’t started any seeds yet. But I will be soon. We just bought 70 acres and hope to move over there before winter. So I am paring down my garden this year since we will be working on both properties and I will have limited time. I love the tree bags, last year was the first time we battled with cabbage moths so I need to cover mine this year to protect them. Great video guys,🇨🇦🌷
We set up our raised beds last fall after viewing your video. We also ordered compost from Hansen’s. Like you folks, we only used half to fill our containers so we are adding to our flower beds this spring. My husband is digging out the worms for fishing.😊
I also put my drain holes on the side of buckets. Or some shredded cardboard at the bottom which sucks up and holds water. I think it helps in hot temps giving the plant a small reservoir as long as it's a deep enough container.
Looking good! Although I don't use those bags, I have to use a mesh that is small enough to not allow access for the cabbage root maggot fly in the spring, which also prevents the cabbage moths from accessing later in the season. The mesh or floating row covers is the only way I can grow brassica's, including rutabaga (a member of the family). But I don't have to worry about that for a while because I am still snow covered and about 8 - 10 weeks out from planting outside. Good video.
I experimented with a net bag on a collard green stripped after the worm infestation. So I peeled all the leaves off & covered it with the net bag. It grew new leaves and it grew all winter. Now it is bolting and I plan to save seeds. Now I plan to try on zucchini and squash because i can't seem to grow them because of vine borers and bugs. I need to get some wire to make the hoops. Do you think the wire will be stiff enough to make taller hoops for the taller plants?
Those bags are nice! You could gather them at the bottom and slightly lift the pots and tuck them under so they'd be snug, even use a twist tie at the top X of the wire frame, probably not necessary though.
please give updates on the napa cabbage, I grew several last year in my greenhouse. They were big and beautiful but they rotted from the center outward. I never watered overhead, just from the base. I live by Springfied and have followed your channel for many years and have learned so much... Thanks...

I've been cleaning up my backyard getting ready for gardening season here in NY. As always I start my seeds too soon so now I'm having to baby over 100 plants that just got up potted. I too garden in pots, not as big as yours. I made narrow "pallets" to keep the pots off the ground and then use conduit pipe to make trellises. Just waiting on some warmer weather. I like your method using the wire to make the arches over your planters. May have to try that.
Here in East Tennessee, I have not had any broccoli grow for me. So, I heard about sprouts and found out that sprouts have ten times the benefit of the broccoli florets. My husband's foot swelling has gone down too. TH-cam is loaded with information on growing sprouts in wide-mouth jars. You may find radish sprouts taste good in your salads too.

I recently watched an episode of Homestead Rescue with Marty Raney, and he rated Missouri as the number 1 most difficult state to homestead in, even more difficult than Alaska! You guys are truly inspiring.
Thanks for sharing the link to the Nets! Also, I would suggest one could also incorporate bungee cord around the actual pots at the rim this way no bugs can sneak underneath.
He almost got you with that wire! The netting is an awesome idea, and it looks like big Easter baskets! Thanks for putting in the efforts to share your homestead with us!
I LOVE Growers Solution's weed fabric! As long as you keep the soil off it, nothing will grow through it but things/seeds can root on top, but the weeds are easy to pull off!!! I bought a small battery-powered blower from Harbor Freight to blow debris/dirt off my weed fabric! You can buy mosquito/bug/tulle fabric in a roll to cover a long bed because some people, (me included) can't source the tubs you have, and using a roll of 9-gauge wire cut to at least 72", you can make hoops to hold the fabric above your brassicas. Prevention is better than wormy food or poisons!
I just laid weed fabric, (Vevor), yesterday. I used it in Florida and now in Monett. It keeps out everything except for areas like you show that are not covered. Cheaper weed fabric might be their issue (commenters), not sure. I got mineral buckets too. They’re great! I planted brassicas last Monday. Putting on frost cloth tomorrow as hard freeze coming Sunday night into Monday morning.
Moving to Northern Missouri by April 15th and getting started gardening immediately when I get there. We have about 100 of these mineral containers plus I use converted kiddie pools as extended gardening space. We will have 7 acres to work with, way more than we have right now. I will change my TH-cam channel name once that happens. There will also be a large in ground garden and so far, I haven't seen any rocks on the property and the soil looks amazing. We have Osage orange trees lining the property as well.
I am looking at snow at the moment. It is melting but we are deep into mud season here and last year mud season never went away. My husband doesn’t want me to use anymore plastic landscape cover, but it sure looks good as a mud free grow area.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm definitely going to order some of those covers. I can get a roll of wire from Lowe's and cut it myself. This is a game changer for me! Yall are so awesome!!❤❤❤❤❤
I love watching your videos. I did a veggie garden in 2022 but not in 2023 because I was getting started building a chicken coop. And raising 14 chickens from a day old. Chickens are great and can’t wait to get started with my veggie garden this year. I do live in central wisconsin so I still have a while to go.
I have been watching your channel for years and love your methodology for determining your course of action and how well you work as a team together. It’s clear that your area has challenged you over the years with weeds and bugs thus moving to ground cover and pots. There is fascinating research and methodology in permaculture and regenerative agriculture practices that highlight how to create optimal soil with soil fungal and microbes that create vibrant soil that supports optimal nutrition for the plants to provide that nutrition for those consuming it. I would be curious how you have researched and determined how to avoid the detrimental affects of leaching plastics on the body and lack of microbes as well as eliminating the nutrients from deep within the soil in your container plantings to ensure that the food you’re growing is giving the greatest nutritional benefit for your effort. Also, would you consider using a “lasagna style no till bed” using several layers of cardboard covered with 6-8 inches of compost over it and planting directly into it. Adding to it yearly and comparing it over several years to your containers in both work and results. The greenhouse would be an interesting place for an experiment of a 30inch wide x 5or 6 foot bed. Could be fun to watch. I’d be very interested in watching this experiment.
With this mild winter I got the gambling spirt and planted my cabbage out last week under frost cloth. Zone 4( figure I should plant more seeds in case? ☃️

Love that music you picked! Sarah- YOU are the ROSE in your living traditions homestead GARDEN! So helpful in all the outdoor chores and animal handling. Plus, such a kitchen pro you are! Kevin is no slouch, of course, but you bring the beauty & love to your home ! Well done, young lady!!!
BTW I love "confirmation" that something is or maybe is NOT correct- So I'd be wanting to turn that fan on and see what happens, too!!!
Agree about the music. You guys could make a music mix to garden and farm by. I bet my goats would like it too.
Are the fruit tree bags like netting or are they like row covers? I have a lot of old row covers that I might be able to sew into bags
@@jenniferrevilla5298 Plant some Fast growing trees... They do exist, I have several that were shade trees in a couple years... BEST WISHES!!
I was up late into the night here in Scotland watching Ryan Hall Y’ll and various storm chasers, worrying about you and your livestock. So glad to see a video this morning, although I haven’t watched more than the first 5 seconds of it yet.
wow yall are amazing! Tomato whisperer hah I love it!
Love using all the space you can wisely.
Love them.
Good morning, watching from BC, Canada! Love your channel! God bless your day! 💕🙏🇨🇦
Last year I used the fruit bags and that was the first year I was able to grow cabbage, and cauliflower without them being riddled with earwigs or cabbage worms. The fruit bag idea was a true blessing.
What about pollination.
@@ninadukette3340 since you harvest these veggies before they flower you don't need to worry.
Enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing what has worked for you. Love the idea of the cover. 🎉
Cover everything brassica haha
Always love your content! Happy growing everyone ❤🥕🥒
Great ideas for cabbage plants and reclaiming planting area
🤷🏼♀️
Third we got white mineral 30 gallon buckets at the feed store.
Love how neat your homestead is kept.
We set up our raised beds last fall after viewing your video. We also ordered compost from Hansen’s. Like you folks, we only used half to fill our containers so we are adding to our flower beds this spring. My husband is digging out the worms for fishing.😊
Loved this video. You gave me a better solution for my containers (covering them). Beautiful transformation on the garden
I also put my drain holes on the side of buckets. Or some shredded cardboard at the bottom which sucks up and holds water. I think it helps in hot temps giving the plant a small reservoir as long as it's a deep enough container.
Long time viewer - love your content, but I prefer the sounds of the farm more than music. Best wishes for a wonderful growing season.
Fantastic video that shows the process from beginning to end!
The song ❤️
I love to repurpose anything I can ❤ Nothing goes to waste
Thanks...
You are an amazing couple. I love the garden part the best on your homestead. Im 77 snc live in SA ane we are sluely going into autume. Last Sunday i planted Onion aeeds zbd Spinach seeds in rows in my veg garden. No Sprout House and on Thursday they were starting to push up already in 4 days. So exciting to see. Im house bound as my husband passed away last year so my garden gives me a bit of joy. I don't drive and i am really sorry now that i am old. My one dsughter lives ar Sun City and my youngest daughter lives in Auckland. My unmarried son lives with me and has a glass fibre manufacturing business from home making racing motor bike fairings. Greetings and best wishes fron East London South Africa. It has been very hot here this past week 28 31 32 degrees.
Planting peas on Sunday. My grandfather ALWAYS plant his peas on St. Patrick's Day.
Thank you from The Netherlands
Love the back ground music you play while y’all are working❤
Great ideas!!! Thank you for sharing this! 💕
Wise move on doing the grass vs. fabric demo and pulling a new patch, no one can argue ya staged it lol! Thank God you guys & everyone survived those storms ok, I was praying for you guys & my other YT family when Ryan was showing Minnesota & Oklahoma! Ohio got hit pretty bad, I thank Him for keeping us safe here.🙏
My husband put the half barrels, that I use for gardening, on pallets. He moves them with the tractor, puts them in the sun in spring, moves the so he plow snow at end of season.
I used tree covers on my Strawberry buckets last year to keep the squirrels out. Worked great!! Definitely a good thing to have on hand
Fantastic video...thank you ❤️ I e-mailed you yesterday because I was worried about you (I thought yesterday was Saturday) 😂 I enjoy and look forward to your videos so much.
Becky from The seasonal homestead grows her broccoli in the fall. She lives within 100 miles of you so id imagine you might have good luck doing it then. Shes super big on Heritage seeds but had to be forced to use a hybrid but oh my goodness, her harvest was so beautiful
God bless you all
I’ve been using drop ceiling wires as my hoops for the covering and it works the same way
great idea!
I really enjoy your videos😊. We live in Alberta 🇨🇦 . We will not be gardening till May at the earliest, but the greenhouse will be going this week.
Awesome garden plan. Love it. I'm getting excited for this year's garden. I live in Massachusetts zone 6 and I can't wait. You have given me so many ideas. Love you guys. Happy Gardening.
Happy Gardening!
Another great video from the LTH! Blessings on your day kiddos!🌻🐛
You are so kind
Amazing idea, Thanks for sharing
This project really inspires me to do the same , thank you both 😊❤❤
Great video, as always. ❤
I use those bags too. I put fencing inside the tubs then put the cover over. It helps keep out the chipmunks, bunnies and the woodchuck and deer.
One of the neatest looking farm junk piles I've ever seen.
You guys are an inspiration!!!
This has motivated me to dive in and get rid of my embarrassing junk pile.
Awesome!
It's like my phone was listening to me😮 because this video showed up after I was outside talking to my son about my junk pile.
I just am so inspired by your setup ! I can definitely see a second greenhouse on your property! ❤
You two just amaze me. I can’t wait to get my flowers and tomatoes planted. It will be a bit yet but it’s nice dreaming about it. God Bless!
Thanks. That's a very nice setup. God bless you and your family and Much love 💖✝️
With this mild winter I got the gambling spirt and planted my cabbage out last week under frost cloth. Zone 4( figure I should plant more seeds in case? ☃️
