Best Mosquito Repellent - Actual in the field Battle Off with DEET vs. Cutter's Lemon Eucalyptus

  • On my last backpacking trip I decided to test Off with 25% DEET and Cutter's 30% Lemon Eucalyptus insect repellent. The bugs were biting, mosquitoes and all types of flies. I sprayed one half of my body with one brand and the other half with the other. I found both to do the job, but the DEET still allowed the mosquito to land on the skin, then it would leave without biting. As opposed to the Cutter's that seemed to not be of any interest at all and the bugs stayed quite a ways away.

    The Repel lemon eucalyptus lasted about 2 hours for me, but it was really muggy, so I was sweating a bunch. It might last longer in better weather. It's not as irritating to my asthma as the DEET. We have some pretty thirsty bugs here in Texas, and it worked against the annoying gnats and flies too!

    My wife went fishing to a lake in Canada once where the mosquitos were thicker and more aggressive than we ever thought possible. (They were actually biting us through our clothes). Absolutely the only thing that would repel them is 98% deet that I just happen to bring along. The local guy who owned the cabin/fishing resort told me that deet is the only thing that works and it has to be at least 30%. ( Brand names are unimportant...its' the % of deet) All the other non deet alternatives that people had were ineffective.

    I've never tried DEET, I have tried Cutter's Lemon Eucalyptus. It seems to work well for me. Smells strong though and no idea how long it lasts for sure. I'm usually not outside long enough to find out, but I know it's hard to wash off, so it might last awhile. I also noticed that Cutters repels fleas in flea infested areas. I really like eucalyptus oil. Not only it repels mosquitoes, it also has multiple health benefits, can act as headache reliever, makes your chest and stomach area feel better when applied, has calming scent, helps clear runny nose when you sniffed it. Also, when the oil eventually evaporates and dries off after like many hours later and the effects wears off, your skin doesn't feel oily.

    Yup. Best option is to make your own essentail oils spray, or rub-in skin oils (with diluted olive oil). Lemon, orange, citronella, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano, eucalpytus, camphor, cedar, pine, fir, peppermint, spearmint, (horse) mint, ... all (or in combination) makes great anti-bugger (bug off you little biting females !) formulas. And if you carry in bottle, then can put drops into candles or spray/drop into campfire (for the vapors) and they will keep the bugs away. Same for spraying your hammock or netting, and all is good.

    Boil a couple teaspoons of ground up organic tobacco in half a gallon of water. Strain it. Then you can bottle it up as natural body spray bug repellent. Works great without all the chemicals. Except a natural nicotine but that's what keeps the bugs away. The small amount of tobacco in half a gallon of water shouldn't have any effects of nicotine seeping through your skin or causing addiction. Just get some organic tobacco from your local tobacco shop. I've even used Gambler pipe tobacco processed with less nicotine. Lifehack I learned from an Eagle's instructor when I was younger.

      Good to know. Heading for a coast hike this week. Maybe another test

  • @sirraymondluxuryyacht8131

    Would it be healthier to wear long sleeves and long pants and spray the clothing rather than skin?
    Or maybe soak clothes in this stuff and air dry? That would be an interesting test

    • @naturecallsoutdoors
      @naturecallsoutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It probably would be much nicer on the skin. Hot, sweaty climb to that lake.

    DEET would probably work just as well or even better if you had a higher percentage spray. 30% is usually a pretty good amount, although you can get even higher than that.

    There is nothing wrong with deet. All assumptions that deet is bad are based on bad science and rumors.
