Why Are There No Mosquitoes at Disney World?

- Walt Disney World is smack dab in the middle of a swamp in a state that is, more or less, a big swamp itself. So with that in mind, why isn’t Walt Disney World swarming with mosquitoes?

How? Well they don’t have any particularly special weapon that isn’t used elsewhere in the world. Disney’s arsenal includes insecticides which kill mosquitoes fairly quickly, growth regulators which reduce their lifespan, and maintaining natural predators in the area that eat the bugs as part of their diet. On their own, they’re all methods that many other places employ to deal with the annoying bugs. However the impressive part is the vigilance and precision in which Disney carries out these methods.
It all begins with the Mosquito Surveillance Program which is an element of the Department of Planning and Engineering for the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The Improvement District itself is the governing jurisdiction that covers Walt Disney World and is controlled by Disney.
You see rather than blindly spraying insecticides over the entirety of the property, which is twice the size of Manhattan, Disney instead uses various methods to carefully track where and when to spray. The program maintains over 60 traps across the area of Walt Disney World.
They’ll then bring those traps, filled with mosquitoes, back to a lab where the mosquitoes are frozen to death and analyzed. The team looks at everything from what kind of species they are, to their concentration, to how old they are and how many of them were ready to lay eggs. By looking at all this data for all of these traps, Disney is able to paint themselves a picture of what parts of the property need the most attention when it comes to eliminating the bugs.
Similar to the way they lay mosquito traps all over property, they also spread something else across their property: chickens. They’re called sentinel chickens, and their sole purpose is to be monitored for signs of dangerous viruses like the West Nile virus. Unlike us, chickens don’t get sick from the West Nile virus. Disney tests the blood of these chickens regularly to see if that antibody is present. If it is, it means a mosquito with the virus was nearby.
So using these tools, Disney is able to adjust their spraying patterns and other mosquito killing methods to keep up with unexpected concentrations of the bug. Now that’s the precision of their methods, but there’s also the vigilance. Disney, more than most, sprays their property twice a day to cull the mosquito numbers, once right around sunrise and once around sunset, the two times of the day mosquitoes are most active. Their fleet of trucks cover as many as a combined 86 miles worth of roads, fields, canals, and firebreaks across their property.
However, what happens when their best isn’t good enough? Well if there’s one thing Disney holds above guest experience, it’s guest safety. So in the few instances where they felt they could do more to ensure that guest safety, it came at the cost of experience. Most notably, there were instances of an encephalitis scare both in 1990 and 1997 that resulted in Disney taking extra precautions. They handed out letters to guests staying on property that cautioned them to minimize activities during sunrise and sunset, and to wear longer sleeves whenever possible. On top of that, both golf courses on property as well as water based attractions were closed early so that guests weren’t using either during sunset. The outdoor luau at the Polynesian resort was temporarily moved indoors, and the hay bale rides and campfire activities at Fort Wilderness were completely cancelled. Recently we saw Disney take extra steps during the Zika virus scare in 2016. Guests at resorts were offered free mosquito repellent, and stations with the repellent were setup throughout the theme parks on property.

In 2006 I was staying at Animal kingdom and got bitten whilst on my balcony overlooking the savanna one evening. My fault. Nobody else’s. The next morning I popped into the hotel shop for some bite cream and the cast member was horrified. Gave me the cream free and took details of my room number. By the time i had returned to my room with the cream a crew had arrived and were draining the pond outside my room!! No more bites for the rest of my stay.... amazing response.

Stepmom got a bad case of chicken pox in Disneyland (2020) due to a mom not vaccinating their kids. There was an outbreak of it for a few days and they had to close that park temporarily. She was hospitalized because it was so bad.
We were staying at the Caribbean Beach Resort and our son wet the bed one night. We told the housekeeper the next morning as we left. When we got in late that night, after midnight, the same, kinda damp, mattress was still there. We called the desk to "complain" and they said they'd send someone right over. Ten minutes later the resort's night manager was there with a brand new mattress and three vouchers for lunch the next day anywhere we wanted to eat on property. Good video... also I've noticed that none of the waters ways in/near the parks and hotel areas are stagnant, these waters are constantly flowing which also keeps the population lower.

Mosquitos don't use lakes to breed, but small stagnant pools of water. Things like hollow trees, a discarded tin can, a depression lined with fallen leaves, etc. Unless the lakes are devoid of life, ofcourse, because fish would eat the larvae otherwise.

I remember mosquitoes at Disney World when I was a kid. I'm 34 now and they've definitely improved on them because we used to stay at Fort Wilderness and that, to my knowledge, was the only time I recall a mosq. This is an awesome video.. Thank you for taking the time to research and put info like this out to the public.. I know some people don't/wont see the value in this, but i live in Florida, about 25 minutes from Disney World, and mosquitoes are really bad this time of year, and i'v kinda wondered how Disney kept their numbers down to a minimum.. I use a Thermacell, when i'm out in the woods, and 2 Thermacell Halo's for my back yard.. Peace!
I live a thousand miles away from Disney World, and I never realized just how much interest I had wondering about how Disney handles mosquitoes until seeing this video.
It does get you wondering.. lol..
Calvin H. Do the halos work well? I'm surrounded by water and marshes, and hate spraying every 1-3 months
They work okay if you're just wanting to sit like at a table or some small area like that. And if there's any kind of breeze you need to make sure the halo is up wind from you so the breeze blows it to you.. I was told about a system called "Mosquito Magnet", that runs off propane, some sort of cartridge for bait i guess, and has to be plugged in also, and takes a propane tank like you use for a Bar-BQ grill, and i believe i'll be getting one of those soon.. They take care of one acre, and they take care of mosquitoes, midges, black flies and no-see-ums.. You have to replace the cartridges every so many days, but I'v been told they work great, and they cost between $299 to $750, depending on which one you get..
Thanks for the info on the Thermacell products; I wasn't familiar with them. I've had great results from the OFF! Clip-Ons, though keeping them fed with refill cartridges and batteries would be expensive if you were using them on a regular basis.

Yes, even if its messing with nature, a single lifespan without mosquitos is worth more than 100 generations.
I’d rather get rid of gnats first then mosquitos. Gnats go in big groups and fly in your nose/ear a lot
S actually! misquitos dont contribute or have a purpose not to be killed in the ecosystem! most species, if removed would change the ecosystem completely, but without misquitos we'd be more or less the same. :)
Heyoo Then what are we waiting for?
In brazil we have a newspaper called "Folha de São Paulo", we roll it and smash the little mosquitoes whenever it's possible.
We were just there in June and this is something I made note of. I don't think I was bitten by a mosquito the whole time I was there! When we left, we went to another resort in Orlando and it was as if all the mosquitoes that were banned from Disney went there! They succeed in many areas for enhancing guest experience, and this was one of their biggest wins. Way to go Disney!
I grew up as a kid on Army posts in the US and every day in the summer months the mosquito-fogging trucks would drive through the housing areas spraying. It’s very interesting to see how the Disney people are maintaining control over their Florida properties.
And the CHICKEN SENTINELS!!! Wow!

As a commercial pesticide applicator that has done work for Disney, I can say firsthand that Disney currently uses the in2care system for mosquito control. It's commercially available in the best product on the market. Disney uses chickens to diagnose areas with heavier mosquito populations around the park. They draw the blood from the chickens and can tell what the mosquito density is. Those are the areas they target.
If Disney can control ABC, ESPN, _and_ Star Wars, mosquitos should be no problem.

I was and still am impressed with the lack of mosquitoes on property but we found a blood filled mosquito in our hotel at Pop Century this past year. It scared me ONLY because encephalitis was found in that county of Florida. All is well but I'm going to be more paranoid next time we go.
I was curious if Disney made use of infertile genetically modified mosquitoes to reduce population?
I didn't notice a single mosquito when I was there in January.
Sure, let's just destroy the environment even more. Great idea!
weehawk , I know. Using genetically infertile mosquitoes to lower the breeding population is the least invasive or damaging to the environment method out there. Altering the structure of the land destroys habitats for other species, but can destroy the breeding grounds of the mosquitoes. Spraying toxins that poisons the entire food chain is an even worse option. Also the genetic modification is a trait that doesn't get spread through the population overall. It's the opposite of the GM crops from Monsanto that are Roundup Ready (giving them the ability to resist higher levels of herbicide and poison the water and the food chain dependent on it).
Infertile mosquitoes are the least destructive to the environment option out there other than eliminating all humans, but then what's the point of Disney parks.
weehawk Mosquitos have no right to exist, and nature would literally be better off without them.
Usually they aren’t an issue in January though it’s a lot cooler than usual and part of our dry season
That's not how roundup ready crops work. The herbicide glyphosate affects a very specific pathway in certain plants and basically chokes off their food supply. RR crops have an alternate pathway making them immune to glyphosate. Because of it's specific mode of action, glyphosate is much less toxic than most other herbicides used before it.
Thanks to all those who work behind the scenes to make our experiences better
Your welcome 🤗

As someone who worked at a WNV control program, I found this super interesting! I have always wondered why I never have gotten bit at Disney!
I moved from the Northeast to Florida when I was 40. In all the time I've been here I've never been bothered by mosquitoes. In fact, as I recall, summertime in Massachusetts I was more bothered by them than I ever have been here. Maybe in the swampy places there are more mosquitoes but in residential areas it is just not a problem.

I'm from Florida. Most neighborhoods maintain a bat hutch. Bats are one of the most cost effective ways to handle mosquitos and other flying pests. Another common method is making sure containers don't have standing water after it rains.
I'm buying some bats next weekend.
JillyBean860 ... where do you buy bats? I wouldn't think a pet store...
JillyBean860 ... those are a protected species. You can't buy bats. You can build a hutch and attract them, but you can't just buy bats. They are a Protected Species, at least here in the US.
Donnie Brasco Really? I haven't heard that. Where did you get your information?
bats actually eat tons of mosquitoes. I had a bad house and could comfortably sit outside at dusk and watch the bats come out and flying around catching bugs. I'd like to watch the yard light where the bugs and moths attract to and a bat would fly through the cloud of insects and there goes the moth's gone. I was really entertaining.
June 18 2018 and you got more than 2 million views,OUTSTANDING job on informing the public Rob.
Our family went to Disney for years, since the 80's & I've got to write this truth. We were bitten many times by mosquitos. There were also these flying huge insects that had a bluish body & scared my daughter all night long, from 6-9pm,it was Disney's haunted hallowed & there were mosquitos & those flying insects I've described every night. Even on other occasions We were still bitten yet not ravaged. We had bites as we probably would've had anywhere though. Nothing more than a person usually gets yet yes, they're still out there. Disney is trying yet that is one impossible task yet I'm quite certain that they've reduced the amount that there "would be" if they didn't do what they do to reduce their population drastically. Gratitude for this informative share.

How to Make a DIY Mosquito Trap With Yeast and Sugar
Making a combination of sugar, yeast, and water is an effective way to trap mosquitoes in and around your property. After a few hours, the yeast starts releasing a steady stream of carbon dioxide, which mosquitoes are highly attracted to.
Cut off the top of an empty plastic bottle, cutting where the bottle straightens out, below the neck.
In the bottom of the bottle, mix together a sugar and yeast solution (if using a 2 liter bottle, mix 1 cup of warm water, 4 tablespoons of sugar, and 1/3 teaspoon of dry yeast; for a smaller bottle, use the same ratio and adjust the amount accordingly).
Flip the top part of the bottle over so that it's pointed downwards and forms a funnel.
Place it on top of the bottom part of the bottle. Use tape or glue to hold the funnel in place, making sure that any gaps or openings around the edges are sealed.
Wrap the bottle in something black (leaving the top uncovered for mosquitoes to fly in) so that both the inside and outside are dark.
Refill the trap with fresh yeast and sugar every few days.
I feel itchy...
Thanks.

I saw a video, probably 3 yr ago, where Nicola Tesla had created an energy device farmers could put in the edge of there fields every 1/4 mile (I can't remember the distance for sure). This energy device would let beneficial bugs in the gardens and the frequency would keep bad insects out. It was said that Disneyland had 2 of these devices and only one was operational now!
Disneyland uses cats to control the mice.
Coronado springs certainly sprays.... I was in the pool at four in the morning and a truck was driving through the complex spraying.. 👍
Look at all those people at 1:51!! When i went D-WORLD 16 years ago right after labor day, the parks were empty, went on splash mountain like 15 times in a row with hardly any wait, till they told me to leave & i got multiple day(not park)tickets for around $30 a day, with most dark rides still there. Even test track had a very short wait.
They are a lot more prevalent after dark, or rather being out after dark drastically increases your odds of getting bit (fewer human victims to choose from, and scaled back attempts to manage the population). I wandered around in the middle of my first night (I work nights, so sleeping at night on vacation took some adjusting to), ended up on one of their hammocks for several hours, reading and listening to music. My legs were so well bitten I looked like I must have walked into the swamp itself covered in sugar water or something. Got some comments, is what I'm saying. Fortunately I've long since rendered myself more or less immune to mosquito bites so I hardly noticed otherwise.
Because its so expensive the mosquitos can't afford it
How much do you think it should cost?? we're just there in February and everything is reasonably priced if you save and plan for vacation
Lmao, one of the funniest comment sections I've seen in a while!

He calls it Disney magic, I call it Disney money..
Lol!!! Omg i laughed so hard at the sentinel chickens!!! That was fantastic.
What kind of insecticide are they using? Is it bird, fish, honey bee friendly? I hate mosquitoes too, and fight them yearly. I tried an environmentally friendly mosquito spray and it helped but not as good as the "bad" spray. Do they monitor the rest of the animal, fish etc. population?
they better not kill bees or else human society is goin down
Nah, Walt Disney just sucks the life force out of them to maintain a corporal form.
Can you hear the monstrous machine whirring? It runs on human souls...
bro your comments are losing quality recently

Justin Y. Do you reply to old comments
I feel like a ton of people are just making accounts by the name of Justin Y and using that profile picture to get likes. 'Cause boi you're everywhere.
Me and my brother were i. Disneyworld in September, and were actually talking about how crazy it was that we hadnt encountered a single mosquito
Thanks so much for sharing this. Very interesting the lengths that they go through with all the testing.

Most of the waterways in Florida have fish. Fish eat the larva. We actually have a mosquito fish which ravenously eats them.
It's not swamp, it's wetlands. Swamp is nasty and wetlands are a diverse happy land.
Can't tell if serious...
Native lifelong Floridian BTW, admittedly always next to the ocean though.
YouthInEyesAsian No, not serious. It's just like jungle and rainforests. Same thing, just cuter words.
Like when people think Florida is all Palm Trees when its mostly palm bushes...
Jumes lol
Aleks Manalacss Sarcasm, pal. Sarcasm. It was a droll comment on how perceptions of certain things are often changed by using a different term. Swamp: gators and mosquitos. Wetlands: a thriving ecosystem with diverse aquatic and avian life.
And autism? If you were seriois about that, self check on that, why don't you?
They probably saw the price of entry now and stay away like most of us
I’ve been to Disney world enough times to not know how many times I’ve been , never been but by mosquitos and they love me. I could walk out my front door in texas in late October and get f’d up by em
Yeah. No mosquitos except those annoying as flies that fly above your head....😡

Look up a company called "No Natz" it's amazing all natural and repels these annoying gnats and mosquitos!
The price alone keeps the mosquito's away
Real answer is they created a mosquito theme park for them.
Disney send some secrets over to the Midwest, went out for 10 minutes and now my legs are covered in bites
Olivia Anna theres a few secrets my parents taught me, it actually goes way way back, starts with blue jeans, ends with bug spray. If that dont work try cutting your grass, removing standing water and make a camp fire pit safe enough to run 24/7. Oughta do it.
Thank you!
The best secret is to move away from the Midwest. There are many, many good reasons.
