Custom Super Mario Sunshine Secret Level!

- This level was made for a week long level hack competition for the Sunshine Hut Discord server. Our theme was 5 objects, where we could make the level using as many objects as we like, as long as we restricted ourselves to 5 different types (not including coins, 1ups, red coin switch and red coins). Mine are; the rotating wood tile, the push bar, a custom gear object, a modified bouncy wood wheel, and a rotating wood platform. The rest of the map is made using map collision and a custom map model. Another rule was to add an additional red coin shine so this video has me playing normally and another attempt going for the timed red coins.
I streamed some development of the level over on / halleester if people are interested, and I have some other sunshine hacking projects hopefully on the way.

I occasionally have dreams about Super Mario Sunshine, no doubt due to how much I played it growing up. This looks like something I'd see in my dreams!
Until the age of 16 I had recurring dream about this level where I repeatedly.fell off the platform and into the abyss beneath
@@AeriaOris I have a theory that "Super Mario Sunshine shared dreams" is just as common as "Super Mario 64 shared dreams," just for a younger generation like you and I probably.
When I was young, I was so scared to sleep because I thought Gooper Blooper would come out and kill me.
@@mariopartylover10 my opinion is that it is such an mathematically abstract and geometrically bizarre realm to a,child that it has a serious lasting psychological impact on children perhaps it also stimulates mathematical ability too or geometric.imagination 🤔
Had 2 dreams that happened to me a while ago which 3D all stars has reminded me of, but I dreamed of 2 sunshine secret stages one themed around the minigame trampoline time and another based on trampoline terror
Dude, I absolutely ADORE having dreams about video games! Some of the most comforting dreams I've ever had tbh.
This looks like it’d be real fun to play. I love those types of tower levels where you go around the whole thing.
Yeah they're super fun! I'm tempted to make another level like this but I need to push myself to diversfy more haha

As long as it gives that classic sunshine rage and that sense of accomplishment when it is completed then its a good level.
I can only dream of sunshine ROM hacks... It's nice to see people finally toying with the idea 👌👌
Should look into Super Mario Eclipse. Beta just came out. a fully remade sunshine romhack.

This could honestly be the Corona Mountain secret level, from an early version when it had 8 shines.
That would be awesome! Though Corona Mountain itself would have to be a fully fledged area rather than a linear level.
I love this, it looks way more simple but so much more fun than the levels they give us

Reminds me of thwomp's fortress in Mario 64 only upgraded haha would've been too dope if there were a bullet Bill at the top and a boss Thwomp stone! And the owl hidden in a tree for part of it would've been awesome too so long as it wasnt too easy

Very cool stuff, nice level! Good use of gears, that one set of three gears with the vertically rotating wood platform is probably my favorite segment, though the vertical ascension at the very end is a close second!
Say, pure curiosity, is it consistent that fludd is added back to the HUD after collecting the last red coin? If so, I'm curious about the cause! It's been too long since I played the game to remember if that was a thing in the original, too :P
It's more than likely an oversight, since FLUDD is available for pretty much every red coin mission, including the ones in the Secret levels.

Oh man. Please tell me that Super Mario Sunshine rom hacks will be a thing soon. I'm tired of all the Mario rom hacks being of Mario 64.
There's already two big ones out there! SMS Arcade and SMSunburn. Nothing on the scale of SM64 Star Road yet but it's just a matter of time at this point!

Made it! Sunshine hacking has come a long way
Mm. Level design isn't the greatest. A couple obstacles would be easily bypassed with a spin jump [(0:20 - 0:28)(1:08 - 1:21)] and other obstacles look better suited for Mario's moveset from 64, namely the long jump. The upward crushers from 0:40 - 0:48 and the long strips of spikes requiring you to fight the rotation of the gears to get across at 0:55 - 1:06 and 1:23 - 1:53. The tight spaces in the latter sections also felt more Galaxy-esque to me, specifically Battlerock Galaxy, Dreadnaught Galaxy, and Buoy Base Galaxy. The sewers present in Delfino Plaza and Ricco Harbor show that Mario's Sunshine moveset doesn't mesh well with tight spaces. However, just because this level doesn't feel very Sunshine doesn't make it bad, or even average. I'm ecstatic that people are starting to make more custom content for my favorite game. I highly recommend looking into Sunshine's movement options and building future levels around what Mario can do here because he has a lot at his disposal. The design of the existing secret stages are all something to keep in mind as well. Each of them is very open and feature platforming challenges that cater more to what Mario can do in this game specifically. Diving being mapped to its own button and the spin jump are key! Keep up the great work! I'm excited to see more of this!
