Great tutorial! I like to fly the drone behind me then set a fly to point in front of me. That way when the battery is low it is only just past me, or over me. But it all depends on the subject I'm shooting and where I can get access too.
Great information. I am working on my very first Hyperlapse right now. I am very new to animation and Adobe Premiere. Your video was very helpful. I subbed you and plan to watch more videos.
at 2:15 you show the intelligent flight modes. Do you have all these modes with the Mavic Air? I don't have Terrain follow, waypoints or draw availible. Is this screenshot for the mavic pro?
Ah. This was just a generic graphic of several different flight modes. So you are probably right. But to do the drone hyperlapse the way we did it here you should have everything you need. Good luck!
Great tutorial guys! Well explained and straight forward. What is the track title that you guys used in your hyperlapse that starts in 0:06 after Jonas say "we're gonna show you how to do aerial hyperlapse"?
Hey ! Thanks! I can't remember the name of the track and right now I don't have the right hard drives hooked up to find out but it is part of the Artlist.io library. You find a link to the library in the description under JONAS MUSIC. Great library at a pretty good price. Good luck! - Jonas
Thanks I think I heard this track before also in a drone video. Will be like seeking for a needle in a hay stack but now I know where to look for it :P Cheers
By the way, you can import raw files into AE natively. If you want to skip Camera Raw, you can export XMPs though I think DNG contains the metadata changes so you might just need to save in LR. Usually the first file in an image sequence is where AE gets its metadata from, so I usually apply corrections from a representative photo to the first image and open in AE and my LR changes show up in camera raw. If I’m just doing a shot or two, I do it all in AE. You can go to interpret footage to adjust Camera Raw. Any graduated changes can be applied in AE before export. This way you don’t need extra files and you keep working with raw files until the final export.
WOW.......this is hands down the BEST step by step process i have found on youtube an the net. you guys just got a subscriber and also notification bell haha. I never do that.
Ive literally been following this video step by step to make my first timelapse but i reached the point at 6:30 where you say to export as an apple pro res, but what if you have pc? my available options that show are DV 24p advanced, DV NTSC, DV PAL, gopro cineform, intel codec, uncompressed UYVY, V210 10bit or none. which one should i choose?
Sorry for the slow reply Brock - If you're in the US DV NTSC is great (us standard) in Europe use PAL. It relates to the framerate. NTSC is 29.97 frames per second and Pal is 25. Ultimately that's because of the old flicker rate of Televisions because of the two power sources we have.
I've been using waypoints setting for mine. Still trying to figure out how to do a better orbit one! I have an example of a drone hyperlapse on my most recent Bali video if you want to take a look.
Jeff Ellis I've tried it but for some reason there is still some jerk in the footage. Isn't as smooth or as easy to stabilize. Maybe the drone they announce in July will be better?
Thanks guys! I have only limited success with a drone hyperlapse in the past and will definately try your workflow. Just discovered your channel, you just earned a shiny new subscriber!
Thanks for sharing this! I've tried similar technique a couple of months ago and I have a problem with every shot having the horizon tilted in a different angle. Have you encountered this as well? btw I've also used the correct shutter speed rule so it was I think a couple of seconds at least for my Phantom 4 Pro - may be that added some instability for the video.
Hey Stanley! Not exactly sure what the issue is but maybe this can help. First thing, make sure the angle of the horizon is calibrated when you start. Then anytime there is strong wind you will have always have more difficulties keeping the drone stable. Gusts tend to throw the drone around a bit. If you look at the hyperlapse we did over the lake it was actually a pretty calm day. The one we did over the forest (the second one) it was really windy. I had to stabilise that quite a lot and the second half of the flight got really bad. When it come so to shutter speed rules I say don't get too caught up in it for this. I say just expose the shot correctly instead of calculating frame rates and shutter speeds and stuff. Longer shutter speeds are going to give you softer images. Not sure if I understood what you said correctly but if you meant you used a 2 seconds exposure, then you will definitely have a big problem getting sharp images. 2 seconds for a moving drone makes it practically impossible to remain stable the whole time. Again, I may have misunderstood that part. - Jonas
Thanks for reply Jonas! What I did for testing with jpeg sequence was: set time interval for 2s, shutter to 1s, and fly steadily in manual mode. I know that longer shutter speeds result in more motion blur and that's what I was after to keep image cinematic. I know wind and other factors, especially in manual mode, can influence the flow quite a bit, but if compared to sped-up video (even 20x) - there was definately something else happening with the gimbal. It was almost like after each shot camera re-balanced and it didn't match balance from the previous frame! I'll definitely have to test again with intelligent flight modes again, may be it will act differently then.
Ah, I see. And Yes, definitely try with the intelligent flight modes next time. Maybe also do a comparison between one flight with long shutter speed (1s like you did last time) and one flight with more of a "normal" shutter speed and see if you can make it look better. My guess is that Warp stabiliser is going to work better when the images are sharper (not so much motion blur) and then you can maybe add some kind of edge blur, kind of like a tilt-shift effect, to the clip in post production for a more cinematic look. Just a thought. Good luck! - Jonas
Good job! Nice video! I would do it: stack import into Photoshop, photos get stacked and positioned way better then warp can. Then import in premiere and still do a aggressive warp stabilizer, rock solid. But same results probably 😉
Hi. First of all, great video. Second of all, Im new to this video editorial world so I would like to ask how to cut off the black edge of the pictures that you've mentioned in your video. Do you have a tutorial of that too??? I know it should be basic but this is my first time ever doing anything like this. Thanks :) :)
Hi! No worries! Just scale up the footage enough that the black "border" is outside of the frame. Basically, make the clip bigger than the video window. For example, if you are editing in Final Cut Pro - go to the video inspector and increase the SCALE ALL option. If you are editing in Adobe Premier - go to the Effect Control settings of the clip and do the same. Since a normal HD video resolution is 1920x1080 pixels and the resolution of your timelapse video clip is quite a bit larger (if you kept the dimensions the same as the photos that you took), you shouldn't risk loosing too much quality. Does this make sense? Good luck! - Jonas
Fantastic, thank you SO, SO much. Really, best tutorial on youtube. Question for you if you have any insight to share -- when leaving after effects, is there any difference between exporting in Apple ProRes 422 vs Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) ? Thank you! ~luke in seattle
Hey thanks! It is a quality thing but marginal difference really. If you are uploading to for example TH-cam I wouldn't worry about exporting to ProRes 422 HQ, bigger size and no noticeable difference in quality. Instead of trying to explain all the technical stuff Apple has a good page on it. Take a look here: support.apple.com/en-us/HT202410
ah sorry, I can't remember what we had it at here. It was a really bright day and we were shooting without ND filters so we kind of had to go with what the camera could handle. 🙂- Jonas
Hey! Glad you liked it! Lightroom and After Effects. So first Lightroom to touch up the shots and export all of them to jpegs. Then After Effects to create the hyperlapse video clip and add some extra warp stabiliser. Good luck!
What is the benefit to creating the hyperlaps this way versus shooting video to speed up later? My guess is you get a higher quality because you’re shooting raw. Is it much higher than sped up 4k?
Hey Andrew! So the first reason is what you said, the RAW resolution allows us to get so much information out of the image and we can modify and play with the look a lot more than a video clip. The second reason is file size. A 15-20min 4K video clip is going to be a huge file and a beast for your computer to process. Having a stack of still images that you can work with separately and then export into a video clip that you can somewhat control the size and format of is in my opinion better and easier. Thanks for commenting though! I am sure there are several other viewers who are wondering the same thing. - Jonas
Hey! Thanks! I would say it is the same formats. After Effects is not an Apple specific program. In fact it is more windows than mac... So you should be good!
2 Questions 1-How did you figure the amount of time allowed to shoot at 2mph, and allowing enough battery to get back? I’d guess with 20 min flight time you could safely allow 15 min. shooting at 2mph and have more than enough time to fly back at high speed. 2nd - if I don’t want to fly in a straight line, how do you do a gentle enough Rotation for a smooth curve or altitude change?
Hi Jeff! A lot of it is practise but here are some pointers. First, when doing a hyperlapse you really don't want to move too fast. When we do normal hyperlapses on the ground we end up taking one photo about every 8 seconds or so and we only move one step forward between each photo. So we're talking really slow movement. With this setup we are shooting one photo every five seconds that means 12 frames/photos every minute of flying. If we give ourselves about 15 minutes of flight time for the interval photos we will end up with 180 shots which will end up being only 5 seconds of video if we are creating a standard video clip with 30 frames per second. Normally when we do timelapses we like to aim for enough photos to do a 10s final timelapse so 5s is really short. But as long as everything goes as planned, a 5s clip is still usable for most (of our) productions. The best way to do it to be sure you have enough battery to get home is to set the start point away from your home point. So either start further back so you end up flying past your start point during the hyperlapse flight. This way your flight home will be shorter. The other way would be to start all the way at the end, or where you think you will end and do the hyperlapse while the drone is flying towards home. We did this for the second hyperlapse in the intro sequence because it was pretty windy and we didn't want to risk any having problems on a low battery. We are still experimenting with your second question so I don't have a great answer yet. Setting/Programming a flight path is one way to do it. If you just want a slow rotation I still think you can use the point of interest rotation flight mode but make sure you radius is a lot bigger than you would think. Otherwise you will end up with something like what I had in the video. A fast rotation but with no time to see the clouds moving. I hope this at least partly answers your questions. Good luck with it! - Jonas
Would 1mph speed yield more frames? Longer clip? I'm thinking with my P4P I'd have a good 20min or more, especially if I start at my end point & fly backwards for the filming.CAN we even set it at 1mph?
Going slower wouldn't necessarily give you more frames but it would shorten the distance flying back (or to your starting point, whichever you choose) and that would possibly allow you to keep the drone in the air a bit longer. So in that sense you would get more shots and a longer clip. On the other hand I don't think that the drones available today can be set to anything slower than 2mph. Have fun playing around with it!! Best, Jonas
52Things: Rob & Jonas Then that’s not the thing to do. Time is the thing. At 2mph you only travel 0.73 of a mile in 22 Minutes. Easy enough to fly fast to my “end point” and film traveling backwards for the 22-25 Minutes and be back at Home Point when battery is done.
I normally edit videos in Final Cut Pro X (or Adobe Premier). I process the photos in Lightroom or Photoshop and then put together the timelapses and hyperlapses in Adobe After Effects. :)
Hello, awesome tutorial. Only prob is, I don't have apple pro res video codec. Im on Windows 10. Ive tried to download codec with no luck. Any advice? Thanks
No problem. Just choose another high res/uncompressed output format. I don't know what list of options you have but I am sure that if you do a search for best export file for your system you will find what you need. If not, let me know again and I'll see what I can dig up. Best, Jonas
52Things: Rob & Jonas thank you for your reply. Yes I used another & it came out good. I am using Adobe effects, like in the video. Strange you have more options 🙁 Thanks again for your help and videos.
Dude, I see 2 mode modes that are normally (unfortunately) not with the Mavic Air. It is "Draw" and "Waypoint". Is it a screen from an other DJI model ? Or is not, is there any way to get these modes ??
You are probably right. It was more of a general graphic I did to demonstrate the numerous flights modes that there are to choose from but not necessarily just the Mavic Air. The aerial shots we did for this video were shot both on an Air and a Mavic Pro. And I would guess that whatever models come out next will likely have most or all of these and who knows, maybe even more. I don't know if there is a way to install additional flight modes on for example the Air. If I find out I'll let you know! :) - Jonas
Not sure but there are definitely other equivalent high res, uncompressed options to choose too. Just use one that doesn't automatically affect the aspect ratio of the clip if that makes sense? Have fun!
...and let me add, AE is a PC program as well so it will without a doubt export an Apple ProRes and I am pretty sure that any editing software will be able to read and work with Apple ProRes clips, so I can't see why there would be a problem. Good luck!
My footage has a dng extension. Is there a way to set it up to jpg which is something i can use. I have final cut pro but the dng pics are not compatible. is there a program I should be using? Rookie here.
I´ve seen many tutorials about how to do a drone hyperlapse and I think this is the best tutorial ever! thank you guys!
Oh man, thanks so much this flattering comment! We really appreciate it!
It's the best!
I agree!
Thanks!
Patagon Ricky thank you
Good tips. Will try.
thank you for the tutorial, its really very easy to follow. Nothing wrong palm landing ive been doing it with my mavic pro since 2017 and 0% error.

I like the way u show how to do that with ur drone and after in programs. Thx👍
Nice tips. Thanks for sharing!
Appreciate you guys putting this together! Love all the details on the post production. VERY helpful! Keep up the great work!
Definitely will try this weekend!
Do it! Super easy! Good luck!
Excellent stuff guys. I loved the tongue out on the hand catch. Cheers
haha! Thanks!

Hey guys sweet video, thanks for all your tutorials!
Anytime! Thanks for letting us know you like them! It is what keeps us going! :)
nice. im going to try this method. thx for sharing
I recommend you to fly out and then bring it back. adjust speed according with distance / fly back
Thanks guys! Never thought about doing a Hyperlapse with my drone this way. Now time to step up the video game

Another great video! Love the spirit of generosity when it comes to sharing. You guys are great.
Excellent tutorial bro....
Worth it....
Awesome! 'Worth it' is what we're going for! Thanks!
Another awesome lesson in Hyperlapse! Great to see you BOTH TOGETHER :) Excited to try this out on my Mavic Pro!! Thx 🍻
Thanks Richard! Good luck with it! It is surprisingly simple (if the wind isn't too strong, then it gets too bumpy). - Jonas
Great tutorial guys!!
Amazing tutorial, thanks so much guys....
Anytime buddy! Thanks for commenting!
Great tutorial! Will be receiving my mavic air later this week and have learned a lot from you guys!
Found your channel last night and binge-watched a ton of your amazing videos. Keep up the good work! (Newbie Drone-Enthusiast with a Mavic Air)
Nice job dude! apreciate all this goods!
Anytime bud! Thanks for commenting!!
Amazing video! Thanks!
Awesome tutorial :D can't wait to give it a go.
Its a great help to my channel. Of course i will subscribed. Thanks
Awesome tutorial guys! Glad I could be a part of it 😁
Thanks buddy! And thanks for being part of it and all the help shooting it!!
Great tutorial, but what if we don't own/use Adobe products? I can't afford them. Can you suggest an alternate toolset to use?
Excellent tutorial.. can we do the same with AVS software?
I've been using waypoints setting for mine. Still trying to figure out how to do a better orbit one! I have an example of a drone hyperlapse on my most recent Bali video if you want to take a look.
Anthony Tori - how about using POI feature in Intelligent Flight Modes. You can set it to 2mph easy
Awesome! Thanks for stopping by Sean. Appreciate the comment.
awsome tutorial..
amazing tutorial...but why my lightroom has a completely different interface?
Antonio Palmucci probably due to a different version. Are you using CS6?
Thanks a million, you guys helped me a lot. I appreciate you .
Really cool! I need to try this out with my drone.. My first few videos on TH-cam are basic but enjoyable to make!
great video content. thanks
very good tutorial. You got a new sub here.
Great Tutorial !
Thanks for the tutorial, can't wait to try this and incorporate those types of shots they look amazing!
Can we this to dji spark?
I was just like "HOLY CRAP", thats the central station in my home town Gothenburg!! 0:22 Great video guys!
Yep, that's where I'm from! :) Goa gubbar! - Jonas
Best one I ever seen. I believe I can do it now lol
Thanks mate
Thank you! Good luck!
Just wondering, at minute 1.35 the menu is from DJI Air? As I don’t have waypoints and terrain follow on my air.
Your red mavic air is dope
Wow, I've been flying drone for a year and I have never thought of this! Thank you so much! I'm trying it right now!
Very good. Keep them coming
Good job
Great, thank you guys!
That's great guys, thanks for the tip! I look forward to trying this out later this week. ✌️
How are keeping drone in line of site?
Nice tutorial. What is the advantage of using After Effects ? Why not do it in Premeire ?
How did you get the stacks pictures in AE? I guess you miss a step of explaining on getting that.
Awesome video.
Is it a way to do this without using After Effects? I don't have that software, I have just Davinci Resolve
You can now just do it with the new Mavic 2! Not sure if that helps, but that's the solution. I don't know of a way to stabilize it in other programs.
Nice tutorial
Wow, I must try that... Off to fly now!!
Thx guys, i will try that out here in Switzerland with my Mavic Air for sure :)
what software didi you use for editing video's anf fotos?
Great vlog will need to give this ago in fcpx
Thanks for this. Something I'll try and re-watch!

I hope this at least partly answers your questions. Good luck with it! - Jonas
Thanks Jonas- I'll have to play with it. I do love TimeLapse & have been wanting to do an aerial one....
Best, Jonas

Then that’s not the thing to do. Time is the thing. At 2mph you only travel 0.73 of a mile in 22 Minutes. Easy enough to fly fast to my “end point” and film traveling backwards for the 22-25 Minutes and be back at Home Point when battery is done.
What is the video editing app that you using mate?
Best, Jonas
Guys you are great!!!
Thank you! We think YOU are great too!! :)
Great vid! Thanks gents 👍
what app do we use
Hi
I was following your steps but I only have a small list of video codec options. 16 not including animation.
Hey! No worries. What program are you using? I am sure there are other high res options you can use instead.
52Things: Rob & Jonas thank you for your reply. Yes I used another & it came out good. I am using Adobe effects, like in the video.
Strange you have more options 🙁
Thanks again for your help and videos.
Yeah that is strange. Glad you figured out a way around it though!
Thanks very helpful
I use FCPX not premier Pro
Awesome video! I have a fairly new travel style channel with mainly drone footage and I’ll have to give that a try!
7:10 whats the name this song?
:) - Jonas
does making it apple prores 422 apply to pc users as well?
Not sure but there are definitely other equivalent high res, uncompressed options to choose too. Just use one that doesn't automatically affect the aspect ratio of the clip if that makes sense? Have fun!
...and let me add, AE is a PC program as well so it will without a doubt export an Apple ProRes and I am pretty sure that any editing software will be able to read and work with Apple ProRes clips, so I can't see why there would be a problem. Good luck!
I am using dji spark, for some weird reason,in photo mode,i cannot find TIMESHOT,all i see under the photo mode is single shot, any help?thanks
ive been landing my mavic pro in my palm for 3yrs with no mistake. its better than using a landing pad.
My footage has a dng extension. Is there a way to set it up to jpg which is something i can use. I have final cut pro but the dng pics are not compatible. is there a program I should be using? Rookie here.
Excelent Tutorial!
Thanks!
