  • The video we posted yesterday raised a few questions regarding various upgrade paths when it comes to building a Subaru EJ engine. In this video Brett addresses those questions as he compares 3 separate builds we're currently working on and the differences between them.

    I have an 04 Usdm Sti and I engine swapped for an Ej207 Version 7 (03 Jdm Sti) The Ej207 feels way faster than the Ej257. EJ207 pulls all the way to 7k and the Ej257 dies off at 6k rpm. I highly recommend.

      * I had to reuse my (Ej257 headers) because of the "drive by wire" that the Ej207 doesn't have.
      *We had Swap the Cam Sensors also the Cams
      *The TGV was also changed from the Ej257 -> Ej207

      I keep my stock "Usdm Ecu" because it's a huge hassle to install the "Jdm Ecu."

    I'll actually make a bit of a comment. The factory standard EJ207 you're showing looks to be a EJ207 "Thick Walled" block. I'm not sure about when they started producing those and whether they're standard issue in late model cars or not. It just looks substantially bigger than the GD-era EJ207. The EJ207 that has been closed-decked appears to be is a normal EJ207, but that may be the fact that liners have been inserted.

    @grecoconduris6716 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing I understand is that forged pistons are preferable when making power because they are stronger.
    But I don't really understand why? Are we saying that in the tune with forged pistons we are allowing the engine to detonate where we wouldn't for a cast piston?

    • @FlyCat-cb8fz
      @FlyCat-cb8fz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      think of it like this, a forged piston isnt melted down and poured into a casting like cast pistons, its literally a lump of metal cut into shape of a piston, its alot stronger than cast thats for sure

    • @michaelbullington3182
      @michaelbullington3182 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cast pistons for Subies have a higher silicon content than most, strong but brittle. They act more like glass than metal after excessive detonation.

    • @Natedoc808
      @Natedoc808 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, keep in mind the cast pistons of the 02-05 USDM EJ205 engines are less prone to ring land failure that the hypereutectic pistons in the Ej255s in later years. If you aren’t going silly with mods then the OEM non- hypereutectic pistons work great. I just pulled mine out of my 02 bugeye wagon EJ205 with 170k miles and there was still the black mirroring on the skirts; thin in spots but still present.

    If Subaru would make their engines closed deck to start with they wouldn't have the head gasket issues they have. I would think it would be cheaper in the long run versus warranty repairs and their reputation would be improved. My ej22t has over 300 thousand miles and no head gasket issue.
