      Biotear No shit, Sherlock. 20th Century Fox *REAAALLLY* should not have made that movie in the first place. They should have let the entire film rights expire. Now do you understand why it's a really bad idea to make live-action movies based off of animated properties, U.S. and/or foreign animated properties?!

    • @greatulcer2117
      @greatulcer2117 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Technically, it's not necessarily whitewashing. I am not defending that abomination of a movie. What I am saying is that Goku's an alien. He's not asian. He's light skinned and has anime eyes, he could be white or whatever. Goku not being asian was one of the more minor issues with the movie.

      @Otaku Lord8 Basically, Dragonball Evolution was a borderline piece of shit movie that immediately flipped off so many die-hard fans and non-anime fans in general because it immediately ignored everything from the source material and why the source material should matter to the audience. Like seriously, calling the Kamehameha wave "airbending" in the movie?! And Goku wanting to go to school just be like everyone and relying on the power of boners just to release the Kamehameha wave?! What the fuck is this shit?!

    In most first world countries, children become adults when they are 18. That means they have 17 years to learn how to be a proper adult for the rest of your life. Do people really think censorship helps "protect" children even though they will spend the majority of their lives as an adult? If nothing happens to them, they're adults for roughly 82 years. 17 years to learn how to be an adult and function as a proper citizen of the planet for the next 82 years. Depending on context, can censorship hurt pre-adults in the long run? Whats your opinion?

      Obviously you dont want kids, and by that i mean 10 or 11 and under, watching or having access to topics relating to sex, heavy violence, drugs ect., but at a point they need to be educated on these things. Being curious is what can get young people into things like drugs, they might see someone, like a friend doing it and it might make them want to try it too. That of course being a very slippery slope. If they were properly educated on these things, they might be less inclined to get involved with them. The problem has become that people, especially here in the US are so overly sensitive that they think that young people cant handle knowing or learning about these things, just speaking from personal experience, i heard things from my friends in middle school that had my folks known about them, they wouldnt have wanted me going back. so I say all that to say this, would you rather young people learn about these things from friends who could lead them astray, or learn from experianced adults who can properly teach them why they should stay away from drugs or to not jump to violence as a first solution to a problem or other things along those lines. Just somthing to think about.

      There is a slight problem with one of your examples in the video, and that is the fact jynx isn't based on any form of racial stereotype at all. It is based an a particular yokai that was believed to be responsible for winter storms in the Japanese mountains. The visual design comes from a classic theatrical depiction of the yokai as an old woman with a face burned black with frostbite and wearing a tattered red and gold kimono. The TH-camr Gaijin Goomba has an in-depth video that gives the details and the proper references.

    We have ratings systems for a reason, and parents are too lazy to turn blu-ray or dvd covers over to check the rating for the cartoon or anime Little Timmy wants to buy. Censorship seems to only benefit and enable this problem.
    Aside from that, ever notice how 4Kids would censor some things but leave in violence at some points? In Yugioh the Movie for example, Yami Yugi gets attacked by a monster directly and they show the silhouette of him getting stabbed in the back, with the dagger protruding through his chest. You'll censor guns and exploding buildings but not people getting stabbed?!

      The problem is stupid people. Oh yeah, it’s fine to blame movies/games/tv shows for making kid’s parents upset. Last time I checked my mom let me watch CSI and Charmed (adult directed shows) and I can for sure say I’m just as bland as anyone else. Stupid people hide shit that they think will “ruin” their kid, which basically will either make them want it more or teach them that things (expecally mature(as in violence or death)/different/sexual themes are completely bad) and make their children into backwards thinking potatoes. Let kids form their own opinions;besides, we live in the digital age, so they can find their way around their parents to see anything they want.

    Censorship is idiotic. Television, anime, manga, and anime movies have age ratings for a reason. If you feel a certain scene in an amine is too graphic, naughty, etc, then just don't air it on tv. put it on netflix or hulu for the parents to decide and put it in the dvd/blue ray release. A lot of anime is made for adults and are given PG13 / R ratings for a reason. Grow up and look at the rating before your brain says "IT'S ANIMATED SO IT /MUST/ BE APPROPRIATE FOR MY KID!"

  • @christscrackers647

    In my opinion, censorship is absolutely stupid. You've got people in america buying their children games like South Park: The Stick of Truth, which is chock full of sex, adult humor, and gore. But people in anime can't do the same thing and have to be censored? That's not only stupid, it's racist. How come we don't have to censor anything in america, but when anime is brought into american for distribution, we have to censor certain parts of anime violence and gore, or sexualized content?
    Some of this stuff is actually tame by today's standards, and obviously we have more access to anime that is uncensored. But back then, it was a ridiculous topic to think about. Parents need to learn to either control what their kids watch and not blame the creators for what they want to create, or not bitch & complain when their kids are suddenly dropping F-bombs and telling dirty jokes once they buy them games like South Park: The Fractured But Whole.

    • @GodwynDi
      @GodwynDi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It doesn't "have" to be censored. The companies that are importing it choose to change it so they can try to sell it to a wider audience. It is a simple business decision these companies make. Doesn't mean they get it right.
      Just like how South Park exists. It doesn't try to sell itself to a younger audience, but if parents want to let their children watch it, so be it.
      Actual censorship is very rare in America. Just as how several countries outright banned certain anime, America does not. That the companies, who had to pay money to acquire a license, and then dub it, market it, and distribute it, chose to change things to try to make sure they could make a profit is not the same thing as censorship.

    Japan has SUCH a bad culture with their voice actors and stars. Levi's voice actor is a MILD case. Who can forget that one girl from AKB48 who had to shave her head and apologize publicly for also betraying her fans by...going into a male's house. I'm not even sure if she even had relations with the man. Granted I understand that it was in her contract as an idol that she's not allowed to have a romantic relationship as long as she's in the group or something but uh...for a contract to have such a clause at all says a lot.

    If something isn't targeted towards kids then don't show it to kids, sure that doesn't stop grown men from watching a show with "Friendship is Magic" in the title but that has nothing to do with being "appropriate" in a modern sense and the studio behind the show even wrote the episodes with the adult viewers in mind with references to the Big Lebowski and at one point even several Anime titles (seriously, look it up). When it comes to anything meant to appeal to the adult demographic it is unreasonable to show it to anyone of the pre-pubescent variety (I put it that way because teenagers really like adult media, this's coming from a live example).
    As for the news stories, as long as legal action doesn't go down the best route is to just make like Saitama and DGAS (Don't Give A Shit), it's their words against literally nobody at all.

    for the death note movie I was okay with L because he was portraying him well until they made him not act like L. I had the same problem with the rest of the movie, if you want to give the characters a different race, that's fine but they have to actually portray the characters correctly

    My oppinion on Censorship, Follow the age rating. If it's Rated TV 14, design it so it fits that rating. If it's got the TV equivalent of Rated R on the other hand, The go balls deep if you want. Companies shouldn't be held responsible just because some parents are idiots.
    Case in point, everyone that took 10 year olds to see deadpool theb bitched becaue it was a Rated R Movie. Same thing with anime, If It's 18 and up, be a parent and dont let your 10 year old watch it.

    • @kaimagnus5760
      @kaimagnus5760 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      michael hall Well thats what I'm saying. I like the movie rating system better because its more simple, so as an example A PG-13 movie isnt sensored, It's made intentionally to meet PG-14 guide lines. Rated R is made to meet rated R, etc.
      So do the same with TV. If it's a show recomended for 17+, put the rating on it, air it at an aptopriate time, then tell the parents to shut up when they dont ise the parental controls

    • @asalways1504
      @asalways1504 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It boils down to parents not being mindful of what their kids watch and expect technology to baby-sit for them. Rather taking responsibility for not paying attention to what their kids are doing or watching, and teach them why you shouldn't do something because the TV showed it, they look for a scapegoat.

      As Always People who can't differentiate between reality & fantasy shouldn't be watching any form of media to begin with... If you know lil Jimmie takes video games as reality, then it's probably not a good idea to allow him anywhere near any games other than like Tetris, that way, the worst he can do is try to move the furniture & boxes around... The same thing goes for what he's allowed to watch on TV, &/or what books he's allowed to read, &/or what music he's allowed to listen to... Maybe I'm just not suggestible enough for me to be influenced by media, thinking that what just happened on screen is completely real, & I should do something to "save" my favorite characters... I've met voice actors a few times, & only came across one that seemed afraid, though his "handler" so to speak, told us about an issue, so we could get autographs, but no pictures... When I met Vic (I'm not even going to attempt to spell his last name, I always spell it wrong, but he has done quite a few characters, he did the voice for Edward on Fullmetal Alchemist), he told us about people sliding yaoi drawings of Ed & Mustang, under the door of his hotel room, laughed about it, then said that he wouldn't sign anything like that, Troy Baker threw a ball at him because he was done signing autographs, & Vic still had a line out the door, I caught Troy a few hours later, I didn't get an autograph, as neither of us had a writing utensil, but he did take a picture with me...
      Anyway, I agree with you, personal responsibility should ALWAYS be a factor, I don't care how young nor how old one is, I think that all should be held accountable for their own actions...But, that'll never happen as long as they can just blame it on an external source... If I killed your entire family, would me saying that I was abused make you sympathetic to the fact that I killed your family?... I should hope NOT!!!... But, there are those who would view it as my being abused should result in clemency for me, because my abused psyche was unable to differentiate between reality, so I clearly believed that it was completely acceptable to do the things I did... Or, if I raped someone you loved, would my saying that I watched too much hentai, & in hentai, the girls, even when they fight it at first, they usually end up enjoying it, so I thought that was how real people reacted to being raped, or if I said that I took naked pictures of them to blackmail them into doing what I wanted, because in hentai, any time a guy threatens to expose a girl with naked pictures, she does exactly what he wants, & when the person you love wouldn't, that's why I raped her, would that make you feel warm fuzzy feelings towards my inability to differentiate between reality & fantasy?... WHAT?!?... NO?!?... 🤔Hmmm... That can't be true... I thought we were all allowed to use stuff like that as our defense for all the deplorable acts we commit... How dare you hit me in the face & knock me on my derriere with the fist of reality!!!...0_0
      This here is, POPPYCOCK, POPPYCOCK I SAY!!!... How dare you expect me to actually expect me to treat my fellow earthlings with respect & dignity!!!... I'll not stand for such a travesty of injustice!!!... Good day to you sir or madam!!!...

    My tiny piece: That Jesus/Buddha anime is really, funny and interesting? I found the take on the 'modern' life they lead and how the things ascribed to them by their religions unique. I also thought it a good lens for examining my own religion [Christianity] as the bible emphasizes many times that Jesus is 'God and man' but mostly we focus on the God aspect and not his day to day living. I can see how it might be offensive to either religion, but I found it really, cute?

      I found it cute too! In my opinion, it highlighted the message of love very well, and from an entertainment point of view, it's nearly impossible to dislike Jesus and Buddha, they're such positive and inspiring figures. I can see why some people might find Jesus' character... maybe... too comedic and ideologically vague for His more serious image in the Bible, but personally I was never offended by it, though I was raised Catholic. In the manga, I just saw a deity doing His best to spread goodwill to all, regardless of their background.

    Takeuchi was appalled by the way her characters were treated by the animators and writers, turning them into men that became women to fight.

      Kiriay Troust unfortunately, a lot of them CAN'T follow the stories, as they think that they won't test well with audiences, even when they just animate what was on the page, something almost always gets left out, other times, they assume that the show &/or movie will be a hit, figuring that they're going to have more time to add in other stuff (I'm looking at you The Last Airbender, in terms of live action adaptations of animated works), & others, after filming the scenes, think that they seem too "fake" &/or "unnatural", so the scenes get cut...
      Fandom is a fickle mistress, as you can't please everyone, & even attempting usually means that you end up pleasing no one...😁

      Though you have to admit that there are some good ones out there. It's just that the bad out weigh the good like the Rurouni Kenshin live action movie which was pretty good and faithful. I did recall the Anime Man or Gaijin Goomba once said how most live action adaptations failed because it does not keep the spirit of the original.
      Take Voltron: Legendary Defenders which was a very different take on Voltron, but it worked because it is not only done better, but it does feel like it is Voltron. Then you got Dragonball Evolution which failed because the story and setting does not feel like it's from Dragonball.

    Actually Robin I did some research on Kimba, apparently the writer of Kimba took inspiration from Walt Disney's Bambi! The writer of Kimba was a huge fan of Disney so in the long run even if Disney did copy Kimba they more or less copied off themselves. The more you know! xD

      Actually Kimba was one of those franchises, like the Simpsons, where the show had pretty much everything a lion could do. This is due to Kimba had multiple tv shows and movies. So, it’s impossible to have Simba do something that Kimba hasn’t already did.
      As for the more popular belief about this copying, is a Kimba movie that supposedly was in production before Lion King was thought of. It turns out that there isn’t any evidence of this being the case, but there was evidences of it being in production after the Lion King was released, based on a YT video that went into a lot of detail about Lion King copying Kimba.
      Lastly the Simba sounds too similar to Kimba thing, in reality Simba means lion in Swahili, along with the rest of the Lion King crew having Swahili terms as their names.

    its not really that controversial its just news organizations propping it up, trust me. if you disagree plz tell me why... i will only accept answers from people that dont talk about opression, racism, institutional anything or represintation. because those things dont exist or dont matter to the story.

The reason I hated the live action death note movie is that it actively trampled on the series that got me into anime in the first place, and is one of my favorite anime’s that I’ve watched so far. I couldn’t care less if the character from an anime is played by a white person cause almost all characters in anime look like their white already (or is that just me?).

      while in the USA normally the age of consent to sex is 13 with a person who is not related to them and +/- 2 yrs of them until that person is over 18 to which that will be rape between the couple even if they have been together for years and one side is 17 with the other being 18 thus why it is normally termed 18+ to get around all the conditions for the younger ages than that
      It is weird how you can term stuff to mean what you want IF you do not say the terms and conditions for it to which is why everyone should read the ToS agreements to everything though by you just bein gable to comment here you personal data is probably already sold over 400 times to 4,000 different corporations around the world

    Seriously, how do all these anime fans keep missing the fact that JINX ISN'T A RACIST REPRESENTATION! It's the myth of the Yama-uba, a part of Japanese folklore, not freaking blackface! It baffles me how often this is overlooked just because Pokemon caved in to the pressure over it. So many people just assume that "Oh, they apologized, that means they must have meant it to be blackface!" when it's a friggin case of poor cultural translation. This after the whole localization bit kills me, because no attempt was made to learn the culture, it just got thrown under the bus. I had hoped a friggin anime channel would at least get that.

      Paladin585, I get what you're saying and I agree that people initially flipped out about it, like when every parent in the country lost their minds when they saw what they presumed to be swastika on a Pokemon card. But I do feel the need to also bring up the infamous Christmas Special where all of Santa's helpers are Jinx(jinxes, jinxi?) which uncomfortably parallels a very racist Christmas story/explanation.

    • @DjDragonblade
      @DjDragonblade 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paladin585 Unfortunately, the reason why most people didn't take the time to find out what was really going on with Jinx is because of things that came before... People (especially in America) are reminded of the things that appeared just fifty or sixty years ago, when it was completely acceptable to use certain forms of so-called representation to depict non-white characters, so now, people consider anything that even comes close to resembling that, to be that, regardless of wit actually is... Example: Kim Kardashian was basically just trying to sell some cosmetics, I could see that she was trying to show what they could do, but literally millions of people took offense, & started saying that she was trying to pretend that she's black, & calling her advertisement, blackface... There's a lady who was the chairwoman of a chapter of the NAACP over in Spokane, WA (at least I think it was Spokane), & people completely flipped when they found out that she wasn't actually black, I think they called it "cultural appropriation" or something like that, & to be fair, she had claimed in many different occasions that she was black, though to be fair to that, her biological brothers were black, so how could anyone but her parents know that she herself wasn't black, just like if I had grew up with white siblings, I'd probably believe that I had white in me as well (though to be fair to me, there are white people who are actually related to me by blood, but still...), & a lot of people actually seemed happy that not only did this lady lose her status as chairwoman, she was borderline destitute because no one else would hire her... Granted, her claiming that she was black for years, probably didn't help her at all, but I think she was more identifying with the things that black people have been through, especially since, looking at her pictures, she does look like she could actually have black in her DNA, though if that's due to her tanning too much or something like that, or if it's "natural", I am not sure...
      She probably saw what her brothers went through back when they were all younger, & thought (like a few people do), "that's just appalling, what can I do to help stop this from happening?"... & joining the NAACP is a good place to start... & it's not like she's an idiot who wouldn't have had a future unless she lied about being black...
      Well anyway, I'm sure that you got what I meant after the first few sentences, so now this just seems like rambling incoherent nothingness... Enjoy the rest of your week!!!...😁

    • @Paladin585
      @Paladin585 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dude, listen to your own words, and please calm down. The translation is correct, however it can mean "burn-black look" or "dark tanning". It is understandable that Jynx was taken the wrong way, as Japanese culture tends to be a bit blind to other cultures, and I'm sure the possibility of that translation didn't help matters. But the translation is a descriptor, not a term referring to the infamous black-face. And be serious, Santa using Jynx as helpers more likely has to do with them being ice type than a cultural connection to an Austrian legend. Even so, Zwarte Piet's only connection to black-face is that actors used to use make-up to approximate Spanish or Moorish features for the legend. Please do not misunderstand me, I'm not defending the racist representation known as black-face in the least, I agree it needs to stop. But trampling another culture because it looks like something from our culture (assuming we're of the same culture), isn't right either.

    Ratings exist for a reason. While parents do need to be careful about what their kids are watching, keep in mind that graphic shows and video games are very mainstream. Most kids in America, at least where I live, have been allowed to play violent video games. While the age does depend on parents, most of those kids have been playing violent games since they were 9 or 10. Censorship doesn't accomplish much at this point, and restricting what creators can write/show is even worse. As someone who wants to grow up to write horror novels some day, just the idea of not being able to write what I'm best at and enjoy writing is terrible.

    Anime is art, it should go without question the mangakas and animators are entitled to artistic freedom to draw and create whatever they want. Ratings do exist, if kids find inappropriate things its the parents fault not the creators.

    On Dragon Ball Evolution, to be fair, Goku is an alien. So, can't really hit on that bit too hard. And one of the very, VERY few things I am NOT angry with that film about. There's plenty of other things in that film to be pissed about anyway.

    Whitewashing: It's more of an issue of when a liberty is given with race, the default is someone white and or which takes away from jobs from different actors as well as producers and directors not even looking for an actor of a different race. This has a big example with the movie the last airbender with not only Katara and Sokka but also having someone dark skin playing zuko which continues the stereotype of a dark skin character being the evil villain and the light skin characters being on the side of good. As for the Japanese that were okay with it...that's just showing one-side from a 'mono-culture' country when the question should had been asked to Japanese-Americans who have to see a lack of representation in media that isn't nerdy, techy or sexualized.Also then comes the issue of the effort put into the movies. How many anime live action have done well in the box office or with the audience. Not too many. Lazy writing, graphics etc. They just shrug it off and make the excuses that people didn't want to watch anime based movies. Similar to how Marvel was blaming diversity for low sales. Instead of bad writing or drawings. Too many in media assume that different races, genders or sexual preference as the main character aren't an interest in the public eye and go the cookie cutter routes.

      You can call The Last Airbender movie many things, but racists isn’t really one of them. M. Night Shyamalan, the director of the movie, is an Indian man and he gave arguably the best characters in the series, Zuko and Iroh, to Indian actors. Culturally incorrect, yes, since the Fire Nation is more based off of the Japanese culture while the Water Tribe is based of the Eskimo culture. Racist, I don’t think so.

      btamamura it started out as a misunderstanding since a fan managed to get a tour of the studio and posted the pics online. apparently that was illegal and so she and others endeavoured to delete the existing material. 3 people refused to give up easily, one because she felt there was no point since it already out, the remaining 2 were new blogs that said they wouldn't delete it if the studio didn't make klance and trans girl Pidge canon (some people claim they were trolls, with how people like them have acted we have our doubts). Long story short, both blogs deleted their stuff & some idiots showed their true colours by actually of approving of blackmail since it was "for the sake of representation!11!!!!". I hate this fandom so much it hurts, the stupidity is also amusing though

      Especially with the shipping war. After The Blade Of Marmora was released, all of the Klance shippers were bragging to the Sheith shippers and were saying Sheith isn't canon, and I'm like "Whoa calm down. It wasn't canon in the first place." I'm so glad I'm both a Klance and Sheith shipper so I wouldn't be a part of that stupid war.
