    I Actually thought Light being unlikeable was the point. He starts as a principled, good-hearted person who slowly becomes corrupted by the power he was given, to the point where he loses his grip on all those things, losing his principles and becoming a cold-hearted, unfeeling killer himself.

      Bar Rag Exactly!!!! The reason why I love Death Note (besides the thrilling cat and mouse game between two geniuses like L and Light) is I like the rise and eventual downfall of Light Yagami. He starts off the show having good intentions, but eventually he is consumed by his own ego and power. I believe without the Death Note, Light would've led a normal life.
      In the show, Ryuk says "humans are so interesting..." It makes you wonder what would happen if you received such a power. Surely you think you wouldn't change, right? That's what makes shows such as Death Note or Breaking Bad or House of Cards so amazing. We see "normal" people who start off with good intentions who eventually spiral into evilness in such a realistic and natural progression because of the events that happen to them. Did they become evil through these events? ...Or were they inherently evil to begin with and power simply fueled the flames? Hmm...
      This is why I love Death Note. It's a show that makes you think and there's many different interpretations to be had.

    • @Azelf1011
      @Azelf1011 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is the point. The show is one big tale of a normal everyday human being obtaining a large amount of power (the Death Note) and being so overwhelmed with power that they start abusing it for their goals and satisfactions. Lights intentions were admirable from the start of wanting to clean the world full of criminals. It's not the best philosophy in the world but we get to see him attempt such a daring plan using the death note and avoiding the insightful L and the Task Force, all while he starts gradually becoming a psychopath and consumes the power he has to become the God of the New World. It doesn't make him the most likeable of protagonists but he doesn't need to be. The writers intended for Light to be so cruel and evil as he show progresses so that it demonstrates how someone could change if they contain so much power. That's what I find fascinating about the show and Light as a character since he plays the villain in the leading role. I get that some would hate Light for what he does. I mean, I love him in the show but if he were a real person right now, the police better fricking shoot the bastard down. But, I don't get why Light being unlikeable as a villain protagonist could be considered a flaw in anyway. I enjoyed him on screen, especially when him and L were facing one another like a Cat and Mouse. Not every protagonist of a show/movie has to be a good person, otherwise the term "Antihero" or "Villain-Protagonist" would not exist.

    • @nicolaswarren3453
      @nicolaswarren3453 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Disclaimer: This is coming from someone who hasn't seen Death Note.
      The way I see it, if you are going to make a show/movie/book from a villain's point of view, especially one that deals with morals and law, you need to have the villain be relatable. If you saw Tarzan or 101 Dalmatians from the villain's point of view it would not work well because the villains are too onenote to the point that they can't be easily related to. If they want to make the perspective of Light interesting, they need to give him moments of genuine humanity so that the line between viewer and villain blurs.

    • @barrag3463
      @barrag3463 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah. I wasn't saying someone was stupid for not wanting to watch a show where the main character is unlikable. That is, in my opinion, one of the story's flaws; Light is kind of conceited all the way through (it just gets turned all the way up over the course of the story).

    • @amirgarcia547
      @amirgarcia547 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nicolas Warren For me, a villain doesn’t always be relatable. As long as their character and motivation is interesting, such as Light, then that might make them good enough in my book. That, and I can tell that Light wasn’t written to be relatable in the first place. He’s basically nothing but an egotistical hypocrite who thinks he’s above everyone just because he has a magic book.

    IMO Death Note was good because it was focused on the villan of the story, a twisted "hero's" journey through the eyes of a psycopath, for me that was the entire point because it was a clever subversion as for him being kira being obvious... it really wasn't, well at least in the first season and the second one pretty much took it all down.

      I saw him as a true hero, but he started to fall and that led to his destruction. I rooted for him to bring justice to the world until he started killing off good people just because they were getting close. They way he manipulated people too. In the end the power corrupted him and showed why man shouldn't play god, but still I related to the desire to have that power to make the world a better place.

    It's not the Christian symbolism that makes Evangelion a deep anime imo, it's the personal psychological struggles of these very flawed characters. I think many people, myself included, relate to Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Misato's struggle and that's what makes it such a great anime. My biggest flaw with it was the "monster of the week" formula that takes up most of the series, but the last 6 episodes and the two feature films make it more than worth it.

    • @ulfberht4431
      @ulfberht4431 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      What gets me is that people seem to have this perception that Evangelion has a “happy ending” yet the tone of it seems to suggest otherwise. And the whole plot about everyone being taken away only to be put back later is only implied and we never see it. If you are going to tell me that everything will turn out fine, show it. Film is a visual story telling, not a word based assumption storytelling.

      Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since.
      Evangelion is nothing but a bright shining lie. There is no instant cure for depression as so many on TH-cam and Reddit claimed and praised this series to be. I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive. Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate this series which people treat larger than life, because of how much pain it resurfaces.
      Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day.
      Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic.
      But it only spiraled me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over a year now.
      I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters.
      But finally, with 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way.

    I personally really liked the ending of Death Note. It's so cool to get to see Light finally crack and express everything he's been holding to himself for years. I don't mind him being the main character either, since it's cool to see a story from what is basically the antagonists pov, and the ending is meant to represent the protagonists winning.
    Also Light Yagami's laugh (sub and dub) is so damn creepy I love it

      @@phantomstrider I heavily dislike Evangelion for a number of reasons.
      I saw the movie, The End of Evangelion in January 2020 without seeing the series first, thinking it would be a stand-alone sequel. The movie resurfaced my deepest traumas and made me feel as if I was forced to relive them. At first, Catharism assured me that a similar fate would never befall me again. But two weeks later, my best friend Max committed suicide. This broke me as I too saw him as a little brother, and he seemed so happy in the pictures he sent. At the time, I was alone, living in an apartment complex for people with social disabilities, me being higher functioning. I wanted someone I could relate with, someone who I could share my pain with, someone I could watch over. Enter Shinji Ikari, who I have come to treat as a real person, as that is how vulnerable I have become. As Covid-19 came around, there was little to distract myself from the franchise, so I became obsessed with it to try and make sense of the entire thing. People claimed the series, including the movie somehow cured them of their depression in ones sitting, when it seemed did the opposite for me which made me more determined to get to the bottom of the rabbit hole. Five months later, I underwent the worst breakup of my life, which continued to place me under the impression that Evangelion was becoming my reality. I was so disturbed at the time, that I was having nightmares of myself as Shinji Ikari choking Asuka and indirectly initiating the Third Impact. After everything that happened I often asked myself what I had done to deserve such suffering. I speculated Evangelion was becoming my reality. One of the things I did to try and find closure with my dilemma was sharing my predicament with people on Discord. Again, for the majority of my undertaking, I was begging for sympathy because I didn’t want to feel I was alone in my suffering despite the fact I was the only one who was unfortunate enough to be traumatized by the movie. Because of this, I was often met with mockery rather than assistance, and was banned from almost every single Evangelion server on Discord. This hurts me very much as I wanted to know if there truly was a cure, that same feeling Shinji felt when his loneliness washed away and he found himself surrounded by love. I refuse to accept the series doesn’t work for me just because I’m different. Because if the problem is me, I have no one to blame but myself. And I’m tired of blaming myself. I just want to appreciate something that others have given so much praise to. But sometimes I can’t help but blame myself for not changing fast enough to love myself as others have wanted me too, especially when the finale made it seem so fucking easy. All I want from Evangelion is for Shinji to be happy. Because he reminds me so much of the person I used to be, I often feel his happiness matters more than my own. If Shinji is not happy, neither am I. I feel his pain on a daily basis because he’s the only one goes wherever I go. I am afraid to lose him just as I have lost Max.

    In defense of Eva's late game character regression (at least for the main trio): The characters are meant to be at their lowest points by the movie so the overly bleak tone isn't completely out of left field, and to make their eventual resurgence and victory more meaningful and well earned.
    -Rei's loyalty to Gendo was put into question, leading to her siding with Shinji at the last moment.
    -Asuka's pride was shattered and her repressed trauma over her mother was forcefully brought back to her mind, leaving her feeling worthless and miserable. Midway through End of Eva, she realizes her mother never truly left her, giving her the motivation to continue fighting.
    -Shinji was forced into doing horrible things for the sake of Nerv's plans and the only direct answer he ever got from anyone was Gendo affirming he only wanted to use him. All this (including "that one scene") left him confused, frustrated and drowning in self hatred. When shit gets serious (in both the movie and the finale two episodes of the show) and goes through a mental battle and comes out learning to love himself, and to live for the sake of no one but himself, reinforced the core message of the entire series up to that point.
    If that regression was still aggravating to watch, that's perfectly reasonable, I just wanted to at least clear that it wasn't for no good reason. The other criticisms were all perfectly valid as well.
    All in all, good video! You were honest with how to felt, and for it you have gained my respect.

    Well to be completely honest, HATING Light Yagami is what made me enjoy the series! I just found myself SO motivated to watch the detectives inch closer and closer to bringing his downfall, so that when it finally came it was extremely satisfying. For me, it;'s like watching a horror. Not all protagonists have to ACT like protagonists! In fact, I enjoy it when shows put in the twist of giving the protagonist an antagonistic role. It makes it much more interesting, because stories don't often show the villain's side; and it is VERY hard to NOT SAY the anime was showing Light as a villain. He's manipulative, psychotic, shows multiple cases of him actually being a bit sexist (this is a maybe, but he seems to objectify women a bit in the series).
    The author himself confirms that if Light NEVER found the notebook, he would have been the best cop there was, and L's closest ally. But the power just corrupts and destroys him and turns him into an egotistical god-complexed monster. So it's fascinating to watch because it is VERY MUCH like watching a villain's origin story, their rise, and downfall. That's one of the reasons I enjoy the anime so much.

      The fact that he found it as a naive, arrogant 17-year old, is the reason why he turned out such a prick. If he had found it as a responsible adult, he would not have seen the world as such a black-and-white place. Death Note is a tragedy of the wrong things happening to a potentially good person at the wrong place during the wrong time. His descent to becoming a criminal, the very thing he swears to destroy, is one of the reasons I consider Death Note a masterpiece.

I know a lot of people didn't like it but it was so satifying to finally see Light crack under the pressure. The whole series it was alluded that he wasn't exactly right in the head, and when he finally loses it and goes crazy, it's honestly satisfying to see him get his commupence.

I feel like this is a big problem for me in modern media in general is that humans feel like they've come to the point where they're so obsessed with their own species that it feels like nothing else is allowed to be good anymore. Even when a non-human character is good, it's usually temporary and they turn out to be evil later on.

    I really enjoyed Death Note myself, and it's actually the series that got me into anime in the first place. I've watched it at least 4 times by now and the thing that keeps it so interesting for me is how fast paced it is, and I absolutely love seeing how the characters plan and figure things out piece by piece. Of course the series isn't perfect though, there aren't too many likeable characters and some of the later episodes were just.... not that exciting. I personally never had that much of a problem with Light, but the character that really put me off was Near. Near is such a paper cut out of L that it's frustrating. And the idea that both Mello and Near had been raised into becoming the successors of L is kinda lame. Other than that I really enjoyed seeing Light plan everything so successfully over the years it almost made me want to see him defeat Near. But the story has to end somewhere, right?

    You said you don't like Evangelion because most of the characters regress instead of rising to the occassion, but I think you're missing the point.
    The idea of the hero who undergoes a wondrous journey and wins a great victory over antagonistic forces, while also overcoming their own limitations and bringing home a benefit to the people is a pervasive and ancient story trope. The comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell calls it The Hero With A Thousand Faces. It's the monomyth, and it's found in works as ancient as the writings of Homer and as modern as Star Wars.
    Neon Genesis Evangelion completely abandons that mythic structure. It takes an assortment of emotionally damaged teenagers, puts the fate of the world on their shoulders, and forces them to fight against an assortment of alien, mind-raping, natural law defying, horrific, eldritch things-that-should-not-be. And they respond to their situation about as well as you would expect a small group of emotionally damaged 14 year olds to respond to it. These damaged children break.
    It's the Hero's Journey turned completely inside out and upside down. It's the reversal of a story that paleolithic man probably told while sitting around the fire in some musty cave.
    There is a lot to criticise about NGE, but the regression of the pilots into gibbering neurotic messes is one of the shows greatest strengths.
    Great video. We all have much loved pieces of media that just don't click for us. I'll hit that thumbs up button.

You yielded to the power of the Shinigami and the notebook and you have confused yourself with a god. In the end, you're nothing more than a crazy serial killer. That’s all you are. Nothing more, and nothing less.”
      In this Nate (or Near) was correct. Light Yagami became the very thing he started out trying to 'fix'.
      Despite the flaws, the closing song "Zetsubo Billy" by Maximum the Hormone, I feel was perfect for the second part of Death Note. It is worth just watching to end to hear it. (It is closing song for episodes 20 - 36) if anyone else is wondering.

    "The characters [In Evangelion] don't grow or progress."
    ...Eh? I've got a bone to pick with this. I can perhaps understand saying it's not your _cup of tea_ but asserting that the characters don't progress feels like a a very strange, even fallacious criticism to me. While it's certainly true that the characters don't evolve in the "traditional sense" (for lack of better word) I don't think narrating their encroaching downward spiral precludes them from growth, either. This is especially true for Shinji: despite 26 episodes of relentless mind fucking and trauma, and never knowing unconditional love his entire life (this is heartbreaking illustrated by the transient embrace he experiences from Kaworu; in spite of only having known him for a matter of days it still briefly lights up his entire world) he nevertheless rejects Instrumentality by resolving that it's better to risk people hurting each other if it still gives them -- HIM -- a chance to one day experience love and happiness. The boy who doggedly proclaimed that he "musn't run away", however muddled by increasing mental anguish, still stuck by his words, to the end.
    If that's not growth I don't know what is.

      Nah, Naruto isn't nearly as bad as you're making it out to be. I think it had a really strong start, but I feel like i fizzled out over time, especially in the anime, what with the literal 72 episodes of filler in a row before Shippuden came out... The only good thing about the fillers was that the fansubbers I used to download the episodes from back in the day would always leave a little funny message after the ED, and during that big slog of filler it was almost all of it jokes about these fillers never ending, which was pretty funny imo xD

      The problem with DBZ is Taito's tendency to cut as many corners as humanly possible(see One Piece) to the point that it starts to drag their shows down, and DBZ itself isn't an exception. It becomes even clearer when you watch a great studio like Madhouse, and their action series like Parasyte and OPM, where there is such an emphasis on fluidity of motion that the static fights of DBZ become even harder to watch.

    I totally respect this video and the arguments for Evangelion, but I would like to make a little counter-argument:
    Being in a very low mental state at the time, Anno decided to take the show mid-run into a much more deconstructive direction, targeting the fake optimism of much of shounen anime at the time, akin to what Watchmen was for superhero comics. The fact that most of the characters become hollow husks by the end makes it feel much more like both an external and internal war that is breaking them down to their core selves. That is until the finale of the series and EOE, which I think are masterful conclusions to the series.
    Fortunately, Anno has improved mentally and I think that shows in the Rebuild films; they offer as companion pieces to the show and are executed in a more straightforward way to engage anyone. I think that's also why some diehard OG fans dislike the films, and it's also probably why many Rebuild fans can't get into the show. But, at the end of the day, it all comes down to what it all means to *you*

    I absolutely LOVE Death Note. Because it was my first anime to take place in the antagonists perspective. That was a fun little change up. We got to see him start out as a very smart person academically but a still dumb teenager wishing that he could make a difference in the negative he saw in the world. Then we got to watch him dive into the sadistically manipulative person he truly was all along. And I want to make this abundantly clear. He would not have gotten as far as he did if Misa Amane hadn't been in the picture. Go ahead and fight me on this. But if she hadn't been on his team then he would've been caught within the first season by L himself. Also, N was not the only one to trap Light. N had help from probably the two best characters who had more screen time in the manga.
    Notice me, Senpai. I'd love to dive more into the good and the bad of this anime.

    Here's how I feel about your choices:
    3)Sword Art Online - Haven't seen - Skipped.
    5)Haruhi Suzumiya, and 2) Evangelion - Personally I have never seen the series but after hearing so many stories from so many people of it being their life changer series that propelled them into anime, I can't help but respect them. It's never their favorite but it has a lot of sentimental value. Anime is becoming more and more mainstream. Unfortunately, this means that it doesn't feel quite as special to anime fans. I became an anime fan on the cusp of the transition so I was never able to watch these shows during the time when they carried so much impact. Instead, I am going to have to watch them after the fact. And to me, that's kinda a bummer.
    1) Death Note - I did start watching this series but I never finished it. I found it really interesting to show the series from who is obviously shown to be the bad guy's POV. I liked it showing the concept of "Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely." actually happening instead of being told that it happened. The thing I loved the most about Death Note was the psychological battle mystery going on between Light and L. I liked L's moral ambiguity as he wasn't entirely good either. Really I stopped watching because it became all too predictable for me. I simply faded away from watching and can't find myself interested to rewatch it.
    And finally 4) Elfen Lied - I watched the entire series and I can honestly say, "I disagree with you, but I respect your opinion". This show stills remains as one of my absolute favorite anime. With all the blood, and gore, and nudity, and mature themes, it is easy to see why this series turns people away. But whenever I think back on it, I can't help but think about how much I enjoyed watching it. So yeah...

  • @archivedaccount5990
    @archivedaccount5990 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Okay, I'll take a look through your list and give my take on it.
    5: I still like Haruhi, but I can see how it can be a turn off for some. Especially regarding the Endless Eight. Plus, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is excellent and is a great tonal shift from the lighthearted nature of the series.
    4: Yeah, I didn't see the appeal of this either. I like gore, but even this is too much.
    3: I have a complicated relationship with this. At first, I used to like it and now I am pretty indifferent. Sure, Kirito was very overpowered, a total edgelord, and kind of a playboy (which contradicts his scarred loner personality) but even still I can't really hate him all that much, since he wasn't as annoying and actually had emotions (unlike most harem OCs that tend to be stoic). And the idea of a VR game that can kill you sounds pretty contrived and highly unrealistic. And they kinda drop the "Life-Threatening MMO" shtick for harem antics. But even still, there are some things I did like about it. The animation was decent, the music is catchy, and the third episode is my favorite in the series. Reason being is that Sachi (the girl from "The Red-Nosed Reindeer" episode) is my favorite character out of the anime. She's a perfect projection on how someone would react when put in a situation like this. Honestly, I would've liked the anime more if it were about her instead of Kirito. Have her retain the same personality but have her guild killed off instead and make her the sole survivor, pretty much give her the same troubles as Kirito and Tetsuo and have her try to endure and overcome the obstacles. I dunno, that's just my take. Wow, there was a lot on my mind than I initially thought.
    2: Again, this was something I have a complicated relationship with. I thought the OP was catchy and I could see the appeal. However, I just feel uncomfortable watching Shinji going through struggles regarding his father, me going through my own abandonment issues.
    1: Yeah, I can see why people may dislike it but I still enjoy it. I like to view Light as the antagonist, because while he had good intentions at first he quickly became mad with power and did the best he could to cover his tracks and come on top, before things escalate so much further, practically anticipating his eventual downfall.

    That’s the point of Evangelion. It’s a deconstruction of Mecha anime, it’s intended to show what would really happen if teens were tasked with fighting in a horrifying and traumatizing war.

    • @thomasjess5029
      @thomasjess5029 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What bothers me most is that they insist on using teens to fight these things. Hello! Earth to Gendo! They're kids! Here's a thought: Why not design the EVA's to be piloted by adults?

    • @Noonecanknow879
      @Noonecanknow879 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They needed to be piloted by children because they were orphans, and the EVAs they used had the souls of their mothers inside them. This was because one of the the most powerful emotions a mother could have is protecting their child. This emotion is shot up to homicidal levels, so the EVAs could fight with immense strength. But the main reason was because in those kinds of shows, the pilots are always young children. This was intended to show what would actually happen if a teen was forced to these sorts of things that would actually happen in a giant robot cartoon.

    There's a theory about Haruhi Suzumiya that states that Haruhi doesn't have any abilities and the person with powers is Kyon.

      Blue Blaze King Yeah, that makes sense. I have my own theory that Haruhi exsits in the same universe as another anime called The day supernatural battles became common place, just at a different time.

      Thank God I'm not the only one. Looking back on the first three seasons, everything felt like a first draft, from the cliché and one-dimensional bullies, to the unnecessary drama and COMPLETELY forced death in the 3rd season, and the lack of character development and interest on the antagonists' side. Even when Monty Oum was alive, the show had a ton of problems, and I'm not talking about the animation or overabundance of feminism, just that everything felt like they were making shit up as they went and their only rule was to put women in the lime light.

    I watched Haruhi Suzumiya not that long ago and you hit the nail on the head Strider. 100% agree with your take. There was a lot going for it and many of the characters are really likable, plus great animation and scenes But Haruhi's antics just got old really fast and cast a shadow over the really strong elements. If they just had her dial it back earlier on, it would have been a lot better. And the capper was in the movie at the end we see Haruhi really does care as she was by Kyon's hospital bed sleeping. Had they shown that side of her earlier on the series and her would have been better.

    I love Death Note but it’s interesting hearing different opinions on them. I agree that Light is very un likable but I feel it’s on purpose as I was always on team L. L is an amazing character who I relate to as a neuro divergent introvert. It does have its flaws but it was my gateway anime and will always be my favorite.

      I just finished another anime on this list:Neon Genesis Evangelion. I agree with it a little bit even though I did enjoy it. I did agree with the regression and I wish strider mentioned how confusing the ending was but I did like most of the characters and I had fun with it.
