In the 20th century, we were fortunate to witness the brilliance of extraordinary composers such as Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Debussy, Bernstein, Khachaturian, Skalkotas, Messiaen, and many others. Among them, Vangelis stands as a composer whom I deeply admire and love, whose works I consistently find great pleasure in listening to. He is undoubtedly a remarkable and singular talent. However, the notion of calling him “the best” strikes me as both dreadful and wholly inappropriate. Art is neither a race nor a competition; it cannot be measured in terms of "better" or "best." Vangelis will forever resonate through his magnificent body of work-not because he is "the best" or "the greatest," but because he is truly great in his own right. And, I daresay, he himself would chuckle at such a title.
You said it so much better than I could have. Here's my comment that I had ready to post, just before reading yours: I just want to explain to whoever came up with this title that a century is one hundred fucking years long, and that there are other genres of composition than movie soundtracks. The question mark doesn't save you. As you were. 😬
This man saved my life and continues to save it every day. Every morning, I listen to his music as I get ready for the day, shower etc. On my morning walks and logs, I listen to his music. As a piano player/synth player, he has had a profound influence on me and my life. At 51 years old, his music has become a part of who I am.
Vangelis conquered my heart when I was about 11. I am 55 and I still love his music, one of my favorites is “Beside you”, with Jon Anderson singing. I hear you loud and clear about such influence in our lives! It’s nice to find someone who “understands” that feeling! ✌️
an amazing Genius talent, humble to the core, not interested in fame, or limelight just put his fingers to those keys and worked his compositional magic. RIP Vangelis
If you are watching and listening to this, please treat yourself and dive in to the Oceanic, Voices, Direct, Antarctica, 1492, The Bounty, and other wonderful Vangelis albums. I first discovered this amazing artist when his music was featured in Carl Sagan's Cosmos, and what a delightful rabbit hole it has been.
I also discovered Vangelis through Cosmos. When I heard Alpha the first time on Cosmos, I was eyeing the credits to find out who composed that particular piece. I later discovered Antarctica, which is my most listened to album by far of any genre despite me having a very varied musical taste with many apparent favourites.
I too first came across Vangelis while watching Cosmos on BBC TV. I bought the album and it's one of my prized posessions. Almost mint condition too. Since then we had Blade Runner (beautiful), Chariots of course plus all the work he did with Jon Anderson. Soon after I found his concept albums. I love the audacity of Heaven & Hell. Searched the second hand markets and found many of these early albums for next to nothing. Still have them all.
This needs to be watched many times to realise the genuine genius of vangelis. there are jems hidden in the ocean of this man. And im so glad he didnt go down the road of fame and fortune, but listened to his heart, a true stoic spirit.
Many years ago, I saw him play live in London, twice actually. To this day two of the most memorable concerts I've attended. Vangelis was an artiste of the highest order.
Vangelis was the best and most beautiful enrichment and inspiration of my life from the very first time I heard his music. Until today and always. He lived musically in the universe and for me he was the master of music. May he and his magnificent compositions remain unforgotten for all time. R.I.P. Vangelis
I discovered Vangelis in 1972 and have followed his work as conscientiously as possible through his musical recordings. Didn't realize he was such a prolific visual artist as well. The documentary is wonderful and I am thankful to have lived in the same time as he; with his guidance, I believe I have glimpsed the infinite and thank him for that vision.
This is a truly extraordinary film documenting Vangelis, the man, the music, the intense beauty and spirit - the love that he encapsulated in his vast body of work. I have many albums of his music, bought over decades, but, never until this documentary, have I been able to appreciate so completely the artist behind the music. Thank you so much for making this available to view on TH-cam, I have been completely in awe - not just for the music, but for this man, so modest and humble, yet at times a man troubled by his success - a maestro in every way :)
Extraordinary ! I've been listening to his music since the seventies and knew almost nothing of all the amazing facts recounted in this superb film. A tour de force biography of a wonderful man! I wish I had known more about him as I listened to his so many iconic & pivotal compositions that have accompanied me all these years. Thank-you for posting this.
What a wonderful musician! My life has been punctuated by his music since my childhood and this superb documentary makes me relive great emotions, thank you very much for this magnificent tribute to the brilliant Vangelis, he will never leave me, "See You Later" Vangelis, I am "To The Unknown Man". Jon Anderson "Yes" to "Dreaming in an open place" in a "state of independence", "I hear you now"...
I know Papathanassiou from "Apocalypse des animaux" (1971), after that some movie melodies, in the group "Aphrodite Childs", also with the Greek/French singer Demis Roussos, it is sympathetic, like some other movie composers. To come back to the tittle of this video, in the XXth century, we got Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Messiaen, with who he can't be compared to.
As a 52 year old, Vangelis has been part of my life growing up.. Just fabulous music that transcends the soul.. The movie Blade Runner would not have been nearly as good without Vangelis and his music RIP V
Just from the very first minutes of this i feel like he never really understood how much of a legend he really is. Or maybe he didn't want to, which would be admirable. But his music has influenced my music and countless others to a degree barely anyone can imagine. He is basically the father of hybrid orchestral music, mixing synths with classical elements.
When he sits down at his keyboard and composes and orchestrates a complete score from his mind to his fingertips I just can barely believe what I'm seeing and hearing.
That's what all serious composers do. Nothing special or different. Indeed many great composers don't even need to sit at a keyboard. Mozart had complete scores in his mind and the hard work was committing the dots to paper.
Vangelis seems very shy and introverted, modest here. But his inner extrovert came out in all it's wonderful glory when he composed and played his wonderful music.
YESSSSS ! A great musician . His music is composed and played by heart . A trully very rare gift given not to many . Vangelis it was and will ever be a true maestro
Thanks for this documentary, it's my first time to look inside of his music & life. And, RIP, Vangelis. My life is devided into before and after I heard your music of Chariots of fire Side B when I was a boy. While listening to that 30-min-long performance, I still remember feeling that this world would be different from what I see. Everyone realizes after a moment of great change in their lives, and your music was the first moment for me.
such a unique and amazing player/composer. i've always been very influenced by vangelis works, as i play by ear too, and feel all the emotion, rather than study the theory of music.
A unique musician,a great human Soul from a higher Spiritual Dimension,he was aware that Music is the Universal language coming from Divine Love's Consciousness...he was inspired by Nature, and the Infinite Universe, his works will never be forgotten,Eternal Master !...
I feel the same way. I have carried Vangelis with me for 45 years… my daughter likes some of the albums but I never met anyone who loved his music like I do.
I'm so glad I grew up with Vangelis' music. I still play his complete discography weekly. Blade Runner - Esper Edition being my favorite. And how right he was about the industry :(
As a keyboard player myself, Vangelis will always be “The” synth wizard. Unlike most well-known pioneers in synth-based music (which I also admire a lot), Vangelis always tried to make beautiful sounding sounds and tracks, showing that it was played by a human being, with loads of emotions. Although he used sequencers and programmed parts on several songs, he would then add layers of real-time performance, as it if was played on any acoustic instrument or vocals. He never tried to be the fastest kid on the block, he never tried to use visual gimmicks to _look_ impressive while playing (sorry, JMJ 😉), because he only seemed to care about _sounding_ musical. Many people know several songs from him, but could never identify him on a photograph, because that was never important to him. This also means that there’s a lot less interviews and “behind the scenes” from him, but he left an amazing quantity of great music, and a big lesson about humility! 🙏
Goosebumps music, a wonderful modest man, another Mozart, he heard it in his head and just played it. I have loved his music all my adult life, I bought 666 when it came out in 1972 and I still have it. So sorry he has gone.
Des frissons en voyant ce magnifique reportage. Il restera un génie car il faisait ta musique avec son cœur et non pour la gloire ou pour l'argent. Une incroyable personne. merci pour ce reportage.
Wonderful documentary, thank you for that. The man is very engaging and not lacking in depth. You can't make great music without being a great man, both an observer and a questioner of life, guided by a voracious and sincere curiosity, as well as a special bond with the Universe. He had all that, he was all that, truly impressive.
That is one hell of a studio ! ! 28:04 His keyboards with all those controllers is mindblowing ! a one man orchestra! Yes this man was indeed a musical genius
Mahalo, I needed this Respect to VANGELIS THE GREAT! Most Amazing & Powerful Video for myself that I''ve seen in MANY MANY moons. Big Aloha for this MAN! ~INSPIRATION FOR ALL~ ~Ras Bird
Outstanding documentary! I've been hearing his music since Chariots of Fire was released, but I never knew about him as a person. An inspiring and uplifting film!
Vangelis scored our dreams and our fears, our stories and our whispers, our triumphs and our sadness. Yes, he was the greatest composer of the 20th century.
What a kind, wise and lovely man! As he said himself: I function as a channel through which music emerges from the chaos of noise. Evangelos, you are truly missed in this world. What a great composer and beautiful soul
The great thing is that automatic music or midi transcription is now simple... hopefully his compositions can be captured. An inspiring composer and musician. Maestro.
My way to Play Synthesizer and everyday i thank Vangelis for Inspiration and give my Sound a Soul 🎛️💯👏👏👏Standing Ovations R.i.P. in your Art of Music 🎉
He is one of the most important people in my life and one of the best influences! I was very lucky to have his art presented to me (those times when in mass media there were people who understood and appreciated art)! ❤
Once I fell down the rabbit hole of listening to more and more of Vangelis' material, there was no coming back for me. One of the very few composers whose music always left an emotional mark on me after hearing it. Genius is a word that can be overused somewhat nowadays, but I'd certainly apply it to this man. What a legacy he has left behind.
I've just watched roughly a third of the documentary, but I had to pause it to comment how amazing it is so far. Pretty much everyone who appears here have really interesting opinions or insights about Vangelis and on top of that, being able to listen Vangelis himself explaining his vision, etc., wow, it's fantastic. This could sound weird but it gives me sadness to see his studio, all that gear not being used anymore now that he's gone. I'm wondering if it's kept just like he left it, almost like a museum? Or maybe nobody ever enters in that room and it's the equivalent of a ghost town. I hope it's well preserved just out of respect for his genius.
Big fan, he is unique in my eyes and his music is of such organic beauty, it always touches me. What strikes me about the documentary is that there are some people around him with dollar signs in their eyes. Vangelis stays true to himself and, on the other hand, does not allow himself to be distracted by nonsense. He is full of wisdom.
Great master !!! You united the people of the world with your music. You will never be forgotten. No one can take your place. You are always in my heart. I love you.
I have been watching this documentary on Vangelis , nearly at the end of it. Been captivated right from the start, don’t want it to end, didn’t realise what a fantastic composer of music he has done throughout his life. He come across to me as a gentle person, who lived for his music. Such a privilege to have found you. Gosh bless❤xx
Not even a chance dude ennio was good but not so good as Vangelis. Vangelis was really ahead of his time and he found electronic , ambient etc . He was the one who got bunch of awards.
I am simply amazed at so much musical sensitivity and sheer talent. The man had symphonies oozing from his fingers. He had the ability to catch his vision and compose a full fledged score with a focus that is unbelievable. The word „genius“ is overused. Here it is a simple fact!
Vangelis Direct fundamentally changed my lifes interest in music, was used in a sound track at the science museum here, my Dad got the CD, listened to it non stop for years, still come back to it.
Te ostanie zdania Maestro to jest to co mamy teraz w Europie ..........................Jest ,były mistrzem ..... wizjoner ,artysta ,twórca jedyny i niepowtarzalny VANGELIS
Brilliant interview. I've known of Vangelis forever, but didn't know much about him. Appears to be a wise man with much knowledge and a fantastic life experience. Oh and what genius too🤣 I'm a musician with an interest in electronic synthesizers, samplers, drum machines etc but how he does what he does is another level

You are absolutely right
oh so well said. I was about to mention Britten, Stravinsky, Bernstein and many others. But then I saw your post:-)
Indeed, Shostakovitch is probably the most extraordinary composer of the 20th century.
I admire your patience. My comment says “What a bullshit title”
You said it so much better than I could have. Here's my comment that I had ready to post, just before reading yours:

The film scores of Vangelis still give me goosebumps....Even though decades have past, and I have more years behind me, than before more.....
Thank you for this documentary. Thank you Maestro Vangelis, thank you for all these fantastic songs.
Indeed the best documentary about Vangelis. He was the incarnation of an artist. We are so blessed to have been journeyed along with him.
And with Ridley Scott!
Finally, finally, finally a documentary on Late Vangelis. Viva Greece, Viva Vangelis.

What a great musician, and what a great human being. 💖
only a beautiful soul creates beautiful music and everyone else is beautiful when they listen 👌
I love you.
His music my Life.
LOVE this man.
Thanks Mr
You made Greece ,to feel proud and honorable, due to your excellent, enormous talent and inspiration. Blessed Vangelis!!!!
Excellent Music Thankyou for sharing
I have been watching this documentary on Vangelis , nearly at the end of it. Been captivated right from the start, don’t want it to end, didn’t realise what a fantastic composer of music he has done throughout his life. He come across to me as a gentle person, who lived for his music. Such a privilege to have found you. Gosh bless❤xx
"Gosh" isn't going to bless anything
Ennio Morricone deserves that title as well, but I wold never say that one is better that the other!
Not even a chance dude ennio was good but not so good as Vangelis.
Vangelis was really ahead of his time and he found electronic , ambient etc .
He was the one who got bunch of awards.
yes, both were geniuses that gave us the most beautiful music.
On the pop side but not on a clasical one, think Penderecki...
Also Michael Cretu.
Not as well , the best
I am simply amazed at so much musical sensitivity and sheer talent. The man had symphonies oozing from his fingers. He had the ability to catch his vision and compose a full fledged score with a focus that is unbelievable. The word „genius“ is overused. Here it is a simple fact!
Brilliant documentary about a brilliant man. Thanks.
Vangelis Direct fundamentally changed my lifes interest in music, was used in a sound track at the science museum here, my Dad got the CD, listened to it non stop for years, still come back to it.
Maestro, your music will stay with human kind till the end!!
Te ostanie zdania Maestro to jest to co mamy teraz w Europie ..........................Jest ,były mistrzem ..... wizjoner ,artysta ,twórca jedyny i niepowtarzalny VANGELIS
Rest in Eternal Peace Maestro. I will never stop loving your beautiful music ❤
