@@OttophilWell, John's music has touched several generations, if you've never watched Harry Potter you obviously won't recognize it as his other themes, he played a big part on the success of the first 3 movies (3rd movie score is a masterpiece), so I say that's enough reason to watch it, as well as the presence of great british actors like Alan Rickman or Maggie Smith (my Great Uncle is 72 and is getting into it, he loves Star Wars and Jaws btw). Btw, nice movie pro-pic.
I know it's considered iconic at this point, and I am a huge fan of Williams' work in general. But I remember seeing the first Potter film in the theater and thinking the Hedwig theme sounded like a cartoony American impression of how a magical British world should sound. Like, a creepy music box tune? It just seems a little on-the-nose. (Also, note that he wrote it without reading the books.) Anyway, the tune has grown on me (I'm not a jaded teenager anymore) but it still think it's ham-fisted compared to Williams' other classics. Later directors used the theme more sparingly and went with simpler, less Hollywood-sounding arrangements, which I think helped.

Well, he's definitely brilliant, but is he a genius, or is his work derivative of other famous composers and compositions? I'd wondered if he'd done a western and found he did _The Cowboys_ and before that _Wagon Train._ However, the former isn't as distinctive as Ennio Morricone's compositions for the Clint Eastwood movies _A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More,_ and _The Good, the Bad and the Ugly._ Instead it seems based on a piece by Aaron Copland. Also, Morricone brings in other sounds from other instruments including electric guitar, while I think Williams sticks to traditional instruments of the orchestra.
@@sandal_thong8631Experimental doesn't equate to genius. Morricone heavily borrowed from other musicians too, like every other composer in history. Moreover Williams has composed many more iconic scores than Morricone. Other than the Dollars Trilogy or Cinema Paradiso, can you name me any other popular soundtracks from him. No offence to Ennio though. Without him we wouldn't have Zimmer.
@@sandal_thong8631As George Lucas explained in the 1995 Pre Special Edition of Star Wars, he would actually write to music as a temp track and tell John Williams to write music similar to the grandiose theme he had in mind. And then John would write his own version based on that theme yes but there were many other themes that came on their own way.
The idea of John Williams not watching Jurassic Park in 25 years and rewatching it, turning to Steven Spielberg and saying “that’s a pretty good movie!” Is the best thing I’ve ever heard.
Crazy that John is still alive and has worked as a pianist on "Some like it hot", one of the greatest films of all time, and a Marilyn Monroe movie at that! What a legendary career.
In a way, I would consider Star Wars II and III and Harry Potter 3 his most underrated. Everyone knows how great they are but they are really top 10. Star Wars III is, in my opinion his best soundtrack ever.

What a Great! He provided the music to my dreams and adventures as a child and through adulthood. The sense of bold and direct energy that he uniquely bottles and compresses in his scores - no other film composer really comes close to him in that, although I appreciate so many of them. Everyone else seems to have the dark nuances dialed in, but John's music speaks truth to you 'straight to your face'. It seems quintessentially American in that way. Decades later, I'm still delighted by the Superman soundtrack, with Empire Strikes Back a close second.

@@sadbravesfanImagine John Williams finally composing his own theme! That would be great :D
What a wonderful man. A true inspiration now and forever. Thank you for this interview, John
This man is responsable for some of the greatest theme songs in movie history , since Jurassic Park to Superman , he is a legend and genius
Home Alone
Also his score for DePalma's "The Fury" is extremely underrated as well
@@sandal_thong8631As George Lucas explained in the 1995 Pre Special Edition of Star Wars, he would actually write to music as a temp track and tell John Williams to write music similar to the grandiose theme he had in mind.
It's also amazing to hear John talking about the Oscars and how Hollywood has changed in the last 60 years or more.
Thank you John Williams for injecting wonder, joy, and adventure into lives through your music for decades.
Hook is his most underrated score I think. I've never heard him talk about his work on it. "You are the Pan" is incredible.
So true
The theme when he flies out of the treehouse is so uplifting and inspirational. Incredible score
In a way, I would consider Star Wars II and III and Harry Potter 3 his most underrated. Everyone knows how great they are but they are really top 10. Star Wars III is, in my opinion his best soundtrack ever.
@@r.c.c.10Name a more sorrowful piece of music than the piece that plays when Vader is being raised up on the operating table and asks Sidious where Padme is. I don't think it's possible
Love the Hook score! Definitely in my top 3 from John Williams.
His humility astounds me! This is the greatest film composer of all time people, we have to appreciate him while we still have him! I love John Williams so much, long live the king!
Mr. Williams wrote the Soundtrack to my youth, and he did an amazing job!
I couldn't help but cry watching this. Such eloquent words and how he described so humbly his accolades. Feel so lucky to have too been alive to appreciate his works of art.
It's refreshing to see a man of his age still sharp as a whip, make actual coherent sentences, and a LEGEND, still making music that will outlast us all.
It is maybe, because he makes music. Generally good for the brain.
This dude isn't only sharp for a man of his age, he is actively better at talking in front of a camera than most people of any age class. It's seriously impressive.
John the Great! I always admire his music and how masterfully he works with it
This man is an absolute legend. What an incredible career.
These 10 mins could’ve gone on for 50 more. Just such a privilege to watch. This man has quite literally made such an impact on generations of people. Thank you infinitely John!
*No one will ever replace you John*
One of the greatest modern composers, an absolute master of movie scoring. What an incredible contribution he's made and continues to make to music and film.
What a legend, and a genuinely humble guy. I'm so glad he is still with us.
"People ask about legacy, I don't think about that very much. I think I'm much too young to think of such things."
That line with that cheeky smile made me choke up a little bit. 🥺 Never age, Mr Williams.
When it comes to composers, he really is the GOAT. What he said prioritizing making a spiritual connection with the listener is exactly what he does. I appreciate this man harnessing his talents! I think I listen to his music almost daily.
The GOAT is Howard Shore
@@robertlukacs4954I love Howard for sure… but Williams is the best. I love James Horner as well.
@@robertlukacs4954I'm sorry but Howard's only legendary score is from the LOTR trilogy. He's an immensely talented composer just like Morricone and I actually like his music, but he's definitely not as versatile and consistent as Williams, Horner or Zimmer is (at least till 2008 for Zimmer)
@adityanarain9428 the Lord of the rings score is the greatest of all time.
@@adityanarain9428Zimmer til 2008? Year release of The Dark Knight, you're talking as if Interstellar or Dune scores didn't exist.
I became a composer because of him, my childhood was extra special, thank you John 🙏🏼
The man who composed the soundtrack of our lives.
What a sweet guy. To be that talented and respected and still be a humble and kind person is rare.
I have had the privilege to see this man conduct live right in front of my eyes. The room was brought to tears because it was a tribute to Carrie Fisher and it was Leia's Theme. This man inspired the direction of my career while I don't work on the music side of things anymore, I don't think my life would've been the same if not for his music. My favorite scores of his are Catch Me If You Can, ET, and Memoirs of a Geisha.
Such a gift to the world. We are all so lucky to live in his time. His music and legacy is going live on forever. Literally FOREVER.
He’s a very humble and mature man, gives a very wholesome vibe. It is amazing that he still does creative things in this day and age!
This guy is 90 years old. Listen to how he talks, hes still all there. You know why? The frequencies of the music that he creates. Music has been with him all his life.
Its insane how good he looks for 92!
It’s insane how many iconic films this man has scored and continues to score. Absolutely love his work on The Lost World and Revenge of the sith.
It really is. Some of the most iconic leitmotifs of all time, that are literally recognizable by billions of people.
Rots is the best scores movie of all time
The man is so talented he can write a pivotal theme after dinner. Nothing but respect for him.
Nothing but love for this man, a true legend, so many of his pieces give me goosebumps. He implied he actually won’t be retiring after all - we’ll see I guess, but I’d love for him to continue!
This man is such a massive inspiration to me as a composer. There is something so magical about the way he composes. Pumped that Steven Spielberg is doing a documentary on his life!
he fit to play bloomis from halloween lmao
the GOAT....the ABSOLUTE GOAT!!! Love his work so much.
I love Star Wars so much and have loved it for essentially my whole life. Through time I have realized just how much John’s score actually makes the movies what they are. He’s a legend and the GOAT
Even before I watched the movies, I already loved John's music from the snipets I heard as a kid.
What always strikes me is how gracious and humble Williams is, his knowledge is also incredible. His legacy and impact will never leave this earth.
In case he reads this comment: Mr. Williams, you are and will always be my number 1 composer, and there are no other composers, to this day, that could send chills to my core than you do; Your music is the reason why the movie soundtrack has a meaningful and beautiful message when it comes to storytelling, inspire other composers to be better and if I worked on a movie project right now, you would be the first one I would beg to do it- no one else. So thank you, John… for everything.
Ma man still slaps for 40 years from my dad's generation to mine! True inspiration! Always felt like home when hearing his music.
Mr. Williams, you deserve the world. You made my world better and continue to do so. Thank you.
Grew up listening to his music! From Harry Potter to Jurassic Park to Indiana Jones, John Williams has been such a huge part of my childhood - and why I love listening to film scores even now as an adult. Just the moment I hear the first note of Hedwig's Theme, I feel so much nostalgia of my childhood.
Some people grew up on Motown, Classic Rock, whatever…I grew up on John Williams. Thank you sir for sharing your incredible gift with the world.
What a wonderful human being. I was lucky enough to see him conduct the Chicago Orchestra back in 2009. Watching him conduct, he moved liked he was painting sound.
"...he moved like he was painting sound." What a wonderful way to describe the way he conducts!
Never thought I'd see something like this. This man all but defined an entire art medium as we know it and we all get to know we were alive at the same time as him
Awww Mr. Williams ❤❤❤❤❤ I adore this gentleman, and his music has been such a staple in my life. I love that he’s still making music. His score for ‘Hook’ will forever make me nostalgic.
92 years old. Cant believe it.
He looks and sounds incredible for his age too. Hope we enjoy him for a good few more years!
If someone told me he was 75 I would’ve believed it
That is why you fail
I thought he was at least around 80 lol
I worked at the commissary at Disney corporate headquarters from 2016-2020. Basically the studio cafeteria. Every Disney employee from CEO Bob Iger to landscaping Mike came in. Countless famous actors, but no one made the entire commissary stop like when John Williams was there. Disney executives who make 6-7 figures in salary would whisper “that’s John Williams over there at the salad bar!”
It's hard to imagine Dinosaur, Superman, Harry Potter, deadly sharks, space wizard and emperor without his contribution. Thank you Mr Williams for all those memories.
An absolute legend that has given us so many memorable moments over decades in our homes and in theaters. Give this man the love and flowers he is due people, while he is still alive and well.
Wow, what a legend. John Williams is a constant source of inspo! Thanks for this vid Variety
Love how much he's added to the movies we watched growing up. Thank you John
He has so many iconic themes. This guy is a mastermind of scoring!
There is no way to believe a man like this even exists! The masterpieces he has written will never be matched.
So much talent, knowledge, wisdom... And he always comes across very humble. I could listen to him talk indefinitely. Just seems like a genuinely wonderful human being.
Can the world come together and all agree how blessed we have been to have had John Williams walk amongst us for 90 years?
This interview needs to be 10x longer. There are so many questions I have about those films that didn't even come close to being addressed.
John Williams has composed one iconic score after another. An absolute legend
Not only is he a master composer and riveting storyteller, this humble and down to earth legend is so genuine and grateful. I could listen to his anecdotes all day. This interview really showcased him as an incredible talent but also a compassionate human.
0:16 "How would I describe a John Williams piece of music?" For me I'd say simply "music as a language." When you listen to a John Williams piece, you can just about hear exactly what is going on within the movie. His music almost describes exactly what's happening on screen, meshing well with the scene without overwhelming it.
His work is timeless and he's a true master of his craft. So great to hear him speak. What an inspiration!
The man is 92‼️‼️‼️ So sharp and simply a wonderful, talented human being💛
This man is more youthful than a lot of people in their 60s. An absolute legend of our time. He has absolutely enriched our planet with his input. Thanks for everything Mr. Williams!
Man he seems like such an excellent and thoughtful guy! His work is incredible and I'm very grateful to have been able to hear and appreciate this interview.
Absolutely wild that this guy can remain humble having written some of the most recognizable pieces of music of all time.
What an amazing guy to create such impactful music!
Just a beautiful, humble man who has given the world so much.
This man will be remembered. Not only as an extraordinary musician, but also as a great man pushing humanity further thx to his scores, words, and behavior.
His Score for “Catch Me If You Can” is a Piece of Art!! Legend!!
The way this man touched (and brings wonderful memories) to so many different generations with his music!
I'm sorry Maestro, but I have to correct you on one thing! It is not the theme parks that keep films like Jurassic Park in our hearts and minds, its your music! My childhood, like millions of others, was filled with your incredible music underscoring our favorite films. I picked up the violin as a kid because I wanted to be able to play some those incredible pieces that you composed! Today I am a music major, and we performed some music from "Home Alone" last Christmas with our Symphony orchestra! Thank you for getting myself, and countless other young people, interested in music!
hmm, that part of it... more concern with the story than the music... but good sound music nonetheless
Unless u a musician, people dont watch movie only because of music.
@@Moodboard39 I think you misunderstand my comment, I am not saying that people watch music for the music, but that it is John Williams's music that makes many of these films memorable and keeps them in our hearts and minds. The plot of Star Wars is a basic hero's journey, (and draws a huge amount of inspiration from Dune) but the score makes it stand out as something unique and memorable. People may watch films for the story, but they remember them because of the music.

One of the greatest, if not the greatest, composers of all time. Thank you, John Williams!
He's great. I love his scores. But come on, he can't compare to the actual great composers like Stravinsky, Mahler, Ravel, Barber, etc. (JW borrows liberally from these composers btw)
@@DanFlashes99 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven are far better.... Composers
John Williams is one of the best composers of the 21st century . Also Hans Zimmer is great but he uses too same sounding in some of his themes.
but none of them, even the composer you mention , has nothing on Ludwig Beethoven , who would inspire Mozart. Ludwig Beethoven is considered to be one of the best music composers of all time.
@@michaelhawkins7389How many Academy Awards does Mozart and Beethoven have? None. John Williams wins
@@michaelhawkins7389I mean, even Beethoven borrowed from Mozart, as well as Haydn, cause Beethoven studied with Haydn, let's not forget J. S. Bach had a big influence on them all.
