- In the Panathenean Stadium, Athens 90,000 spectator, ancient all-marble stadium, Vangelis performs his creation Chariots of Fire from the Oscar winning movie soundtrack.
The performance was part of the Opening Ceremony of the 6th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in 1997 in Athens.
The concept of the ceremony, the direction, the artistic and musical supervision was solely by Vangelis Papathanasiou.
Στο Παναθηναϊκό στάδιο, το αρχαίο καλλιμάρμαρο στάδιο της Αθήνας, ο Βαγγέλης Παπαθανασίου ερμηνεύει τη δημιουργία του Chariots of Fire από την μουσική επένδυση της ομώνυμης ταινίας.
Η ερμηνεία ήταν μέρος της τελετής έναρξης του 6ου Παγκοσμίου Πρωταθλήματος Ανοικτού Στίβου της IAAF, το 1997 στην Αθήνα.
Η έμπνευση, σκηνοθεσία, καλλιτεχνική και μουσική επιμέλεια ήταν του Βαγγέλη Παπαθανασίου.

I'm such a big metalhead.. but this really brings tears in my eyes. This guy is a god. Everybody should know him.. he deserves it. He deserves more fame then anyone else on this planet.
Have you heard his early works? He started his career by forming a prog rock band called Aphrodites Child back in 1970. The album 666 is out of this world and years ahead of its time. In particular the song "The Four Horsemen". Look it up on TH-cam, I think you will like it.

I’ve just heard the terrible news Vangelis died today. Can’t believe it! I bought the ‘Chariots of Fire’ album in 1981 when I was 14 and grew up with his music. ‘Short Stories’ and ‘Friends of Mr Cairo’ (Jon & Vangelis)… “a seasons wish will come true, all seasons begin with you”.
I’m so sad…Where has the time gone. Thank you Evangelos where ever you are for your inspirational music.
I listened to him with attention, respect and appreciation, without knowing who he was and where he came from. Almost always as a soundtrack to a movie, or in some environmental play. It was Vangelis, the unparalleled Greek.
The greatest modern day composer, truly incredible.
Το πιό θλιβερό είναι ότι πρίν απο τις τελευταίες 10 μέρες που "έφυγε" ο Βαγγέλης υπήρχαν Έλληνες που τον ήξεραν μόνο σαν όνομα και ελάχιστα διαμάντια απο την μουσική του είχαν ακούσει απο την αρκετά μεγάλη δισκογραφία του που αξίζει να την έχουμε όλοι στην κατοχή μας. Ο Βαγγέλης θα συνεχίσει να ζεί μέσα απο την μουσική του στην οποία έχει καταθέσει την ψυχή του με τα εκπληκτικά αυτά αποτελέσματα σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο που όλος ο πλανήτης θρύνησε το χαμό του και τους τίτλους τέλους του εξαιρετικού έργου του. Θα πρέπει να είμαστε περήφανοι που έχουμε γεννηθεί στην ίδια χώρα με αυτόν τον μοναδικό δημιουργό. Αθάνατος!!!!

This is probably the closest I will ever come to seeing Vangelis live...but seeing this...has not only got me jonesin' for the coverage of the London Olympics, but has tears running down my face and chills down my spine...chills that have nothing to do with the winter chill in my room. Vangelis is one of two musicians that forever inspire me to reach for my own dreams--musical dreams, in fact. Corny-sounding? Maybe, to some, but the desire to make music for others like this leaves me speechless.
