That’s what I always thought too! My favorite 2 stroke. I used them all from 2/71,353,453,471,671,6V53,6V92,8V71 and the 8V92. I never cared for the raspy sound of a 318 though. Detroit’s sound the same in some ways but each model has its own unique sound. I do miss hearing them everyday, but I don’t miss the oil leaks, hard starting in cold weather and fuel burn.

That Detroit is California qualified... No smoke, clean burn. Reminds me of my first driving job. I hauled rock, stone, slag, sand and salt in a 1978 Ford LTL 9000 8V92 with a 5x4 in the floor. I was tired at the end of the day but that LuLu smoked like a broke stove & she hummed like Ella Fitzgerald and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

A good running Detroit won’t roll clouds of black smoke, just a puff when taking off then a slight haze under load once you’re moving. What killed them wasn’t their Particulate output, it was the new NOX emissions standards, which is something not visible to the eye. NOX is the same reason Cummins went to low flow cooling around the same time Detroit pulled the 71 and 92’s out of the road truck market. Surprisingly enough though they still put 8v92TA’s with electronic controls in military trucks well into the 2000’s, seems Uncle Sam doesn’t play by his own rules when it’s considered a “national defense” issue.

Either m42 or M50NIL tool steel to take the loads, they can also run on very high octane t=ethanol which makes more power and burns much hotter and cleaner, today i fill and run nothing but XD-100 BRP 2 stroke etec oil in my 8v92 silver detroit turbo and its a bit hooer and cleaner than shell rotella SAE 40 2T!

There is absolutely no need to subject that much torque to the drive train. A feathered throttle as you shift will double the life of your tranny and rear ends. A frame that does not flex is the signature of a good driver. You can sometimes spot a hard driver just by looking at the sag of the springs on the right side of the steer axle.

DDEC: one of the only times a 'puter and a fuel injection system ever made sense. No hunting, burns super-duper clean, and takes nothing away from the platform--it only ever added. Shame they're not being sold new in North America anymore, but between the military and all the dedicated folks like this dude I think Detroits are going to be around for a very long time to come. When there are no more OTR diesels working for a buck, trucks like this will just get historical plates and live on anyway. Rock on, Joyride. You am a good trumck.

You got a new subscriber, that truck sounds wicked (although all day long no , but for a little R.I.P. over the valley hell yea,)I drove a Fitzgerald glider for a company with a 60 series strait piped , it was ok for driving uphill but coming back down over the hill that Jake brake on that truck was pretty dang loud 😎……. But …..nice truck brother ! Keep the videos coming and stay safe out there brother ! ❤️

We had 2 cab over hay trucks in the I think around the early 80’s with 8V92 motors. Both had a supercharger and both had 2 turbos. Those trucks were bad sum bitches. I was a teenager when dad retired those trucks and I remember nobody wanted those engines. Couldn’t give them away

The 8v92 Detroit Diesel is the undisputed King of all diesel engines in terms of pure music to the ears. Nothing will ever be able to compare to its rhythm

I think the DDEC 4 has the best control over multiple fuel injections in the DDEC series. Meaning, it has the best/faster response time of on/off metering with smaller injection quantities. DDEC as far as I know, was the first company to have multiple injections. Instead of mechanical, 10 btdc, squirt, bang: the DDEC can say squirt up to 3 times btdc and up to 5 times after tdc to make a more complete burn of the fuel.

Never met a DDEC 4 controlled diesel that I didn't like. The common Series 60 is a great unit, and you can tell that this engine is happy. It pulls through the gears properly, revs well, great throttle response.

I love joyride probably more than you do! Your videos are important now more than ever because two stroke trucks have not come from the factory since 1987 and you never hear them . The sound goes far because there aren't tall buildings to stop the sound

Does sound sweet, only not as angry as the bark of a straight piped 6v92.
I had a 6v in a GMC Brigadier, tuned hot, throttle delays removed, 9 speed...
That rascal wanted to twist and lift the steers off the ground if you took off dumping the 'celerator, while pouring black smoke, black burnt fuel, heavier fuel than air, c'mon...
It was fun to drive and that v6 sounded great!
You could take off easy with no smoke, or on special occasions roll coal.
