    i raise brown jap courtnix and have for a couple years. Easy to raise, keep ceiling lexx than 12 inches, 1"x1/2" for floor, water and food all the time must be availible due to speed of development. for chicks use 30 percent turkey starter then drop it to 20 to 25 % for the adults. Presently i use a 20 percent protein and add a bit of turkey starter ( 30%) from time to time. Adults seem to be ok with 20% but egg production may be a bit low. I use trays below my birds with compressed pine shavings ( 5 bux a bundle) which keeps the flys down and smell down.. Using the shavings is fast to clean and relitter the tray ( i do 10 trays in about 15 minutes ) and use the poo/shavings for garden ( its hot in nitrogen so it gets tilled in prior to planting across the winter. Ya all need a special type of sissor kind of egg opener as cracking dont get it! the sissor cuts the top of the egg off and is fast. Iffin you are gonna incubate 100.1 will work with 45% humidity for 15 days turning then 3 days rest at 65% humidity and make sure u have embossed paper towells or shop towells ( blue) under them or they get splay legs. IN the brooder line it with 5 or so layers to dispose as soiled and necessary but keep the paper towells till they are about 3 or so weeks old. Dump the food on the floor on the brooder early so they can access and always keep water near. Put some marbles or rocks in the water lip or they get in and drown. They are easy to raise, fairly quiet and if the neighbors ask what was the noise the male just made then shrug your shoulders and tell them that u guess it was some kind of bird. In the city they are pets and NOT FARM STOCK..... this circumvents the BS of code compliance. They are messy poopers and poop in the water and food trays. when birds get older I use a 1 dollar plastic shoe box with lid and put 3 plus 3 plus 1 plus 1 1.25" holes in the container as high as possible so the birds do climb inside the tray and scratch all over but the feed mostly remains inside the shoe box. If u use an open feeder they waste a lot of feed ( my guess is they waste near 40 percent and the shoe box means they only waste about 2-5 % at most so its a substantial savings.
    Eggs taste great........different then the chicken eggs but very subtle difference.

    Thanks for the info. I’ve got a question that is often ignored. When times get rough, and feed stores shut down, then what? Chickens are easy. Let them free range for food. Quail, on the other hand……
    Thanks again.

      @papawsplace  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If it came to it:
      I could do the same as with rabbits and put them in tractor cages on the grass and move them around. Collect insects, weed seeds, berries, pecans, grow corn etc.

    I just got my first batch of eggs, white wing coturnix. I look forward to more videos. I am wondering how is the feed costs in your area, and what age do you move them out of a brooder? Thank you for taking the time with your video. Have a blessed day to all of you there.

    • @papawsplace
      @papawsplace  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Here the feed is about $22 for a 50 pound bag. Moving them from the brooder depends on the time of year and the temperature, but for the most part I move them at two weeks of age.

    • @johoney5458
      @johoney5458 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I got a couple in my playlist from long ago.
      Here in Louisiana I normally Dry hatch my quail then on lock down bring the humidity up to around 55 to 65%.
      Now that I'm hatching chickens I feel the %humidity is more important from the start. But that's just my opinion. LOL

    Do you have the coop staked or tied down to the ground? What feed do they eat? I bet they taste good grilled too.

    • @papawsplace
      @papawsplace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not staked down but on the bottom of the legs are 5 foot runners to keep it from flipping. I feed 20% Breeder-Layer crumbles to my breeders and 28% Grower to my meat birds / chicks

    • @papawsplace
      @papawsplace  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always hatch out new stock at the end of every year and process the one-year-old birds, so one year old is about the oldest I've eating, and they are just as good as 10-week-old birds.

      Best cages for Coturnix is 12" high. The taller it is the more chance they will break their neck.
