    You can get oil pans or kitty litter boxes at the dollar store. They work great for dust baths or if it's too hot you can put some water in them for the quail to stand in to cool off.

    Interesting, I use 2 cups wood ash, 2 cup sand, 2 cup dirt and 1 Tbsp DE, mixed well.
    I usually put 2 cups of the mix into their plastic bath. They so enjoy it and are very entertaining while bathing.

    Mine absolutely love their sand bath. My quail hutch has a built in sand bath and definitely notice it keeps them busy and not bored. I sift my sand once or twice a week to get any solids/feathers and such out to stretch the sand life. Most of my eggs are laid in the sand box and stay really clean. Great video Terry! :)

    I use sand from my gardens 😂 soils here are very very depleted unless being maintained.
    I mix the native sand with, DE or a mite dust. I do wash/rinse and dry the native sand before giving it to them. I might consider wood ash since we have a fireplace.

    Half of my 8x3 coop is sand (see Slightly rednecked coop) and this has been the summer of carnage. Blinded roosters due to aggression, overbred hens, despite good hen/rooster ratio. I sift the sand and add new periodically and they do love daily sand bathing. I also raise mealworms and encourage them to hunt in the sand, as a treat. It gets them off the wire and helps prevent bumblefoot, although I had to cull a hen due to her bumblefoot earlier this summer as well. *Sigh*. Just candled my 40 incubating eggs two days ago and had to pitch 30 due to infertility, and have a rooster with a broken beak. Thinking about starting over with a new group. Any feedback is appreciated.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would watch for an aggressive bird and cull. Also, if they are overheated or stressed out in anyway, ie predator, cat, hawk, etc. could be causing unrest with your birds.

      Thank you Terry! I have premier one electric poultry netting around all the pens now. No more predators, only insurgency from within! Hens in the kitchen hospital cage aren't bad, but roosters are downright noisy!

    Do you still provide sand baths in your all wire cages? It seems small for 6 quail and a sand bath inside that cage, doesn't it?

  • @winstonjohnson5896
    @winstonjohnson5896 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My 23 quail are outdoors in a aviary that I built for them. I provided a sand box for them and they just go crazy dusting themselves, especially after I've screened it - they get the wood chips that I put over the ground in the aviary. There's times that I just set there in the aviary watching them, it's quite comical. My 13 hens started laying eggs a week ago, I'm collecting 7-9 eggs per day. Does anyone have any tips on getting the hens to brood their eggs?

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know what you mean, I love watching my quail when they are in the sand bath. Congrats on the new egg layers!

    • @jecriggs
      @jecriggs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Road2Training if you cut down on the male quail load, the females will be much less stressed, and you may have a better chance of having hens go broody. We also have our quail on the ground in a large pen with housing, and "hidey holes", places to dust bathe, lots of greens in season, microgreens and sprouted grains out of season, fermented grains, meal worm treats, and even songbird seed when there are no other treats readily available.

    • @winstonjohnson5896
      @winstonjohnson5896 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Road2Training I've made hiding places throughout the aviary by using Cedar tree boughs, also some rock formations. I feed them greens from my raised-bed garden - leaves from the broccoli, Swiss Chard, kale and lettuce plants - they really tear into the greens when I first put them in the aviary each morning. I've got two really aggressive males that will be dinner in a week or so. I'm trying to get the hens to brood but no luck so far.

    How often do you put the sand bath in? Once a week? or more frequently? I just got a male and female, they are just about 6 weeks old. I left the sand bath in with them and they enjoyed it thoroughly, but then just slept in it and pooped it all up~!! How long do you leave the sandbox in with them and if they haven't pooped in it, do you ever re-use the sand?

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I try for once a week but sometimes it's every other week. Mine do the same, they sleep and lay eggs in the sand box.
