Hogan, the GOAT; from where he started to where he finished, Greyhound Bus and all. He may possibly have won the Grand Slam in 1953 if it hadn't been for a scheduling problem that prevented him from playing in that year's PGA Championship. To the best of my knowledge he never had a coach, sport psychologist, personal trainer, or any of the other "entourage" folks that present day golfers have. He did it all by himself. He has 63 PGA wins, 139 top three finishes, and 241 top ten. And that was interrupted by a two year stint in the Army during WWll and the aforementioned Greyhound Bus collision that very nearly killed him. Ben Hogan, my hero!
Steve, thank you so much! THIS video changed my golf today. Tried your tips and crushed it today - just shit my best round ever, 86. Been playing just over two years and no one has given me a better boost in terms I could understand! Genius! Very thankful and excited!
This has been one of the best ever. I have watched it three times now and shared it with my granddaughter. It seems like you can watch nine out of ten golfers on the range and see arms flailing around from a stiff body or rushing the downswing. Your last number of videos have been great.
Hogan, Nicklaus, and Woods. These three generational golfers all distinguished themselves. (With respect to Snead, Palmer, Watson, and Ballesteros). Nicklaus was asked by Golf Digest if Tiger Woods was the best ball striker he had ever seen. His response, as a man who had played against them both, was "No,no-Hogan easily." At this time, I don't know if this generation has a player that can perform above their peers as these men did. As yet. But if your looking for a great golf swing, Ben Hogan, even though his time was long ago, would be a good study. Great video Steve. I love the history of the game. Thanks.
Watched this video and hit the range today to put it into practice...I was so consistent! Onto the course and shot a 79 even though I only broke 90 last week. Truly unbelievable lesson in consistency Steve and a big thank you for sharing, completely changed my golf game and I am forever grateful for it!
What makes your instruction so good is how natural you put the information across. This and the little injected humor. Again another great lesson which I need to take notice of and to practice. Thank you 😊
This is truly genius. Now I’m swinging with greater confidence which has given me more structure and length in my backswing. Thanks Steve for this wee gem😊
Hi Sj , I just changed to this technique by chance - the biggest benefit of this technique is the face alignment _ I’m now hitting irons straight within 3 mtr radius. And although I feel I’m swinging slow I picked up 10% swing speed. Weird but I now remember the basics when I picked up the game. Thanks for confirming.
Your hogan video just popped up have been playing golf 40 years , when I was younger I played hogan style , wow just gone back to that old school swing and feels so natural. I didn’t realise how easy the hogan swing is , so simple 😍
This is a game changing tip from Steve. Elbows pointing at hips then just turn and keep the forearms and club shaft as set throughout the swing. Feels like swinging in a barrel
Excellent instructions, I own and have read Hogans five lessons but it's great to see it taught on a vid which explains a lot more than reading IMO. Cheers Steve ❤
A great video Steve, the elbow position is very valuable information. I was under the impression that the lead elbow (left one) pointed parallel to the target line, from watching the pros on tv. This video corrects that for me. Thank you very much, keep up the great job of helping us enjoy this great game.
Good video. As a disciple of Hogan I have been working on this recently after realising my right arm in particular was "flying away". Keeping tight to the body promotes the turn you mention and gets you in a position to hit from the top. You expressed and demonstrated it well - thanks!
Great lesson. I can't wait to try it at the range tomorrow. BTW, love the Scottish burr. I have a friend Graeme Baxter who is Scottish. He is a fantastic golf artist. He is licensed by the R and A and the USGA. and has brilliant artworks of literally all the majors including The Open. You might want to check his web page out.
Great tips as ever Steve !! I inadvertently started doing this a month ago to help with wedges (purely by luck) and found it sorted my chipping and wedges. Have extended to all irons now and have gone from someone who struggled with low point control to hitting some of my best irons for years! Swing feels shorter but seems to increase speed and control so much !! I even now need to use my dead aim marker now as I can hit greens 🤣 keep the great content going mate 👍
Your videos lately have been amazing and full of the best information from the greatest's to have ever lived. I recently started playing with a new coworker struggling with over the top, gonna show him these last 3 tomorrow. Keep up the great work!
Great lesson Steve I’m a great fan of Ben Hogan, Gary Player reckons he was the greatest ball striker. I also suffered from an over swing and got the yips on the tee, so this will help keep the discipline and keep the connection and generate a compact swing using the torso rather than arms. Many thanks Steve! Kept the right arm/ elbow in tight to my right hip struck the ball better and straighter also get a much better rotation and stops me from an over swing.
As a junior (when there wasn’t internet) I spent time reading Ben Hogan 5 lessons, Harvey Pennicks little red book, Faldos winning formula etc (still have them). I learnt so much, but easy to forget when you watch the ‘next best thing / quick fix’ on TH-cam. Hours spent reading and trying cannot be replaced. Having tried Eureka and winning a competition using it for the first time on the course (2019), I know it works, the difficulty is trying to eliminate other external influences.
I can testify This has transformed my golf - all aspects - short irons long irons and driving. Brilliant tip as always Steve, you are without doubt the best you tuber golf coach.
@@arthurrytus7318 2:12 sorry it has taken so long only just worked out how to monitor reply’s 😮 I had a bad pull - snap hook - very rarely slice - but yes it should apply to slicers - I think a problem for slicers is moving arms away from body and then the path back down comes over the top - out to in - this tip gives you an in to out. Hope it helps
Well, I'm back from the range and OMG: it's taken me 40 years to get this. Thank You Steve, watch me get to Single figures from 18hcp in the next 12 months. Best golf video on the imternet
This is so good. Such a crisp strike. I´ve been watching a lot of Hogan stuff recently in an effort to improve my swing, as I get disconnected at the top, flying right elbow and a bit steep, and tend to draw all my irons, probably due to my strong grip. There´s no way you could have a strong grip doing this, but yet my strike improves when I weaken my grip. I really need to get on the range and get this grooved in. Thanks for this :)
Like some others astonished how this helped first time . Best round of year following a bad slump and a “lost”swing . Not only did it help driver through to wedges but bled into improved putting as well.
Thank you for reminding me of how Ben Hogan swung his club in relation to his body... The elbows in was the one part of his swing I forgot.... Thanks again Steve... By the way, I love your accent... Happy New Year
Tried, as much as I can, this adjustment. I had the best iron striking day in a long, long time. Had to adjust my club selection as I put myself "in jail" a few times but, that was a small price to pay for striking the ball much cleaner. Thanks!
I read Hogan's book before every golf season. I feel that's helped me game as much or more than TH-cam has. Nothing against TH-cam it is a wealth of golf information but it can also feel overwhelming.
I wish I had seen this video before I played today! I seemed to have completely lost the plot with my swing - will definitely be trying this tip next time I play.
Great tip and explained so well. Would love to see you play a few holes and talk through the process of course management. I haven’t been playing long and can strike the ball now but I’m far to aggressive on the course which puts me in trouble at times.
Steve video is so good....the Hogan book was the1st golf book / instruction I ever had...and as you say its simplicity itself. Have watched old video of Hogan and it's poetry....ithink Tom Watson is probably the other one that makes it simple.⛳⛳
Love this Steve 🏴 Were you not at Peebles that day? Just tell wherever you are at you are filming for your channel I'm sure they'd accommodate, no?
Having just tried this again at the range it certainly works. Having your arms positioned in this way encourages a lot of good things as you can’t cheat the system. Out of 40 balls tonight with an 8i, 50% we’re scarily straight, and where I didn’t quite keep the correct form, 10yds left or right at most. Pretty good for something I haven’t done for 10+yrs.
Great stuff. Also, I have read Hogan’s five lessons several times. But seeing you do it on a screen makes it much easier to comprehend. I get it now. I hope this works with the Driver as well?!
I've really been struggling with connection between hands and body, ending up letting the hands going behind me and having no room to get back to the ball, this is a well timed drill for me :)
A lot of their appeal is that you feel PROUD of them. Like your one of their family. Positive energy, great songs, a joy to see succeed. Women in rock are strong of late. None stronger than ⚡️
Hi Steve... great video. Hey I've got a quick question. With the elbows connected to your side in the takeaway wouldn't one lose distance with the arms so close to the body? I've heard that your right arm should be separated from your body in order to get more distance. If your arms are squeezed against your body you'll be accurate but bot long. Correct me if I'm wrong ty. :)
Steven, another great video. I have come back to this Hogan teaching of late and my game quite simply became stable and predictable . Thankyou for endorsing and demonstrating a fundamentally sound swing. How many more people would continue with this game if they were taught something so repeatable and easy to do?
I used to aim down the right, and turn all my shots over, but I couldn't avoid the occasional smother hook. I added this 'elbows' idea to my preshot routine, and I am more accurate, but now I have to adjust my aim line to accommodate the straighter flight. One thing at a time. I'll get there.
Such good content! It's pissing rain here in Cape Town so the range is it of the question the next few days, but I would have loved to have got out there with this swing thought.
I can definitely see Jon Rahm similarities in that shorter back swing. I’ve just finished re-reading Golf My Way - Nicklaus always spoke about a simple repeatable swing - same for every stroke. I think that’s what you are creating here, Steve, with your Eureka concept. I’m very excited.
Great video Steve. Think a.drive down from.edinburgh is required!!. Do you feel you lost any speed or distance being a little tighter .should it feel restrictive?. Going to give it a try as I've lost my swing!
Hogan also said that putting his arms in this position gave him more of an overall feeling of swinging with just one arm (2 arms combined as one), thus simplifying the swing.
Steve, can l using this elbow connection for all clubs (Driver, Woods, Hybrids to Wedges)? Thank you for your great and very helpful videos. Best regards from 🇨🇭
Thanks for the video. But however, I notice when you actually watch Ben's swing, his right elbow at address, is not facing his hip, I hear a lot of coaches say the same thing as yourself. But when you look at Ben's setup. His right elbow is not facing his hip...am I missing something??

Arms flying around does sabotage otherwise promising swings. This is a great tip that I vaguely remember from Hogan's book. You express it well.
Beautiful - thank you very much 👌
Are the same principles used for driver and fairway shots etc...?
