Dude I never heard it explained so simply! This helped more than any golf lesson! Thanks for the explanation and what’s comfortable for me and how it works! This allows to swing so naturally it’s crazy! I learned from you in 15 mins than all those other guys out there in 15 years! Thanks Steve! U da man!
Yes sir! Subscribed! As a former high handicapper who practically instantly became a scratch golfer after reading Hogan's Five Lessons i vehemently believe they are the only instruction any amateur should ever focus on! I've read and watched so much other instruction over the years and nothing cuts to the chase better than he did way back in 1957! It's perfection. And as he said it ALL starts with this grip. That is the whole key to sending the club into motion on its natural orbit while really feeling the clubhead throughout its entire journey. The drill to practice without trail hand index and thumb is brilliant. This light light grip pressure sets the entire motion on its proper course. It naturally produces the smoothest, silkiest motion as the club literally whips through impact. This way the all-important lead hand dominates, supinates, pounds, and freely releases all the energy into the ball. I can practicaly flush the ball all day long with my eyes closed thanks to Hogan's grip and his five lessons.
I learned to become a champion golfer by reading and following Ben Hogan's teachings of Power Golf !!!!!!!! Illustrations of Ben Hogan's swing and even putting stroke in Power Golf was the absolute best teaching method in the world of golf. Every beginning golfer should follow Ben Hogan's style of playing golf.
Your Ben Hogan series of videos is amazing! I have struggled with an inconsistent swing for years. I watched your Ben Hogan series and practiced the techniques in your videos and I my swing has made remarkable improvements. Thanks for making the series and I look forward to viewing more of your videos.
I have watched so many other people “analyze” this grip and it NEVER made sense. Finally!!!! Somebody who took the time and delve into the minutia, even hitting some kinesiology points. I took some time off and played 2x in the last 2 weeks. Once was with a former colleague who I haven’t seen in ages. I played disastrously both times.and I have been beating myself up over not putting in the practice. Today I watched this video multiple times and my swing felt like it used to when I would crush the ball. Only this time I didn’t beat the ball like it owed me $$$$$$. Thank you!
This grip literally changed my game, I also put it together with the Ben Hogan rotation video you made and I have never hit the ball straighter and more pure.
This is the most detailed instruction/demonstration of the Ben Hogan's grip...very fitting for my Ben Hogan's golf swing. Now my golf swing fundamentals complete! Thank you very much Steve....Cheers!!!
I could not believe this! I have Hogan's book and I was reading the chapter on grip this morning! Now, you have posted a video on the same thing. This has made it so much easier to understand Hogan's written text. You made everything very clear! Thanks a lot.
Went back to my well worn Hogan book after struggling with a weak fade combined with a strong (ish) grip. This explains how I now hit straight (ish) to a draw with the weaker grip. Cheers!
I’ve noticed in my videos I come over the top a lot. I was trying this and the swing for last hour and it just feels very natural. I’m not trying to force anything. Thank you for a great explanation.
I've been trying to adjust my grip for months now according to recommendations from friends and videos. This video simplified everything I should have been doing all along! Thanks you so much for simply explaining and answering so many of my questions.
I am a fader who has leaned into it rather than trying to recreate the "perfect" PGA tour flight...aka draw. I play with a neutral grip as the "strong" grip left me feeling out of sync. At times this even causes me to pull my shots left as I have a fast lower body to compensate for less agility in shoulder turn due to a large chest and not being able to get left shoulder under chin. Thanks Steve! You validate my unconventional swing....and with Ramm winning, and Spieth's "chicken wing" I am finally learning to make my own swing that works for me!
I’ve recently took this onto the course and i’ve never struck the ball better… From drives to chipping, seem to be able to compress the ball better too
What a difference. I’ve struggled with a big fade and slice. I’ve played 72 holes since watching this video and changing my grip. The results …. I missed only 4 fairways and added around 20 yards to my drives. Thank you Steve.
I prefer a slightly weaker left hand grip personally, a strong grip seems to make my early extension worse but the weaker grip helps get my hands to release through impact better and I draw my irons
Hi Steve, you have a new fan. Englishman in Texas and I tried this today. Felt weird at first but results were instant. Very weird on my driver as I normally have a big fade. Straightened it out by opening my stance! It worked straight away! Very weird but very effective. Thanks for your easy to follow and simple tips.
Excellent Steve , described it beautifully, in his early years his left hand was strong and in an effort to rid the hook he moved the left hand to a weaker position , hit hard with out fear of hooking !
Great video and a very well explained lesson on the grip.Love the Hogan series very interesting and would loved to have seen Hogan play with today’s equipment, I think he would have cleaned up!
Steve, thought I would drop by to say hello as I’ve been following your content for some time now. I like your presentation style and find your content top drawer. I’m 60 years old and play about six times per week, your little experiments with the game have been quite helpful to me. I’m currently playing with an 8 handicap but would like to shave one stroke off of that this year.
This was so helpful, thanks for posting this. I´ve been fascinated with Hogans swing for a while, he himself said he starts the swing with the lower body, shifting the weight to the lead leg and firing the hips, letting the club follow like a whip... i´ve noticed other pros on YT starting to talk about this recently and thought, hang on, I´m sure Ben Hogan did this so came back to studies of his swing and sure enough, there it is. Then I noticed that Hogans grip looked odd, compared to the stronger grip I´ve learned (I tend to draw or hook the ball, but it can turn into a slice if I get too quick with the hips, even with a strong grip, but hit it cleaner with what feels like a weaker grip) I guess it´s time to unlearn what I´ve been doing wrong and go buy hogans book, then I might finally break 80!
Love this video Steve - have struggled with a sub-optimal grip for too long, this feels good and is giving me more confidence (like I have a ‘north star’ that I can trust) Great stuff! 👍🏼
Interesting point about the middle two fingers on the right hand being a power source as I am somebody who tends to involve the thumb and index finger too much. Definitely food for thought.
Can't wait to try it out. Feels so much more comfortable than a strong interlocking grip and I can twist the face closed and less open about the same. Guess it depends on one's orthopedic situation.
I love the hogan series, especially the grip as it is almost identical to mines,I don't try to bow my left wrist but it happens almost automatically as long as I can feel the butt end of the grip tight on the heel pad on downswing,it really is genius
My grip was learnt from Hogans book But remember hogan was left handed playing right so you will have to do a lot of left side strengthening and coordination. I ve had to become almost ambidextrous! to get the most out of this weak left hand grip tho i have managed to get my left thumb to the right of the shaft and almost matching it with the my heel pad. Hogan bangs on about pressure in his right index knuckle and this is the key to using your right side in the golf swing, sustaining pressure on the grip, which is what the drill of swinging with right thumb off grip teaches you.
Your videos have helped in the past and this came along at just the right time. My grip has been getting stronger and stronger with duck hooks and pulls showing up too often with the driver . One video and a bucket of balls later I’m back. Sincere thanks. Can you do one now on getting a 62 year old past 200 yards with a driver ?
I had this grip for years and being the perennial tinkerererrrrr...as we all are tried to get better by going and doing something unproductive. Hogan was a genius, pure class again Steve.
As a teen I consulted that book like the Bible. I went over that grip over and over and practiced until my callouses were exactly like his in the drawings. It's what got me breaking 80, and supination got me to scratch.
I’m a big fan of the Hogan grip and the left hand is about the same as my own but I’m a long way from understanding how to hit the ball by turning the body by the left waist and creating that draw. It’s something I would love to do though. Great vid
I've been binge watching your vids and finally took the "knowledge" to the range tonight. It. Was. AWESOME!!! Thank you for giving me hope to play decent again someday soon! I'm playing 9 holes tomorrow!
Always enjoy your videos Steve you have a simple uncomplicated way of explaining them, I very often use your methods when Im on the range or the short game area, I have really enjoyed the Ben Hogan series it suits my swing path, really good stuff Steve and keep up the good work
Thanks Steve. I’ve been using the Eureka swing for a couple of months now. It has helped me a lot. My bad shot is a hook. I do bow my wrist in my back swing. Hopefully this video will help me straighten things out. I’ll definitely be trying weakening my grip.
Great vid Steve! I have been trying to get rid of my cupped left wrist at the top while using a strong grip with mixed results. Went to the weak Hogan style grip ...Bingo.
I saw a slo mo swing analysis of Tommy Fleetwood last week - he actually lifts his right thumb off the shaft on the backswing. I’m led to believe Mr Fleetwood is a half decent ball striker (!) so you may be on to something here, Steve…😉. Many thanks for another brilliant ‘grip’ video, they’ve got me going right back to basics. 🙏
That is so interesting as you have lots of views having the pressure in the index of the right. I think Ben was right as it will help keep the right hand from rolling the face. His wrist was so very bent back that the index finger would be a death move for him.
Once you interlock, aren’t you lifting and moving/the first finger/main grip from the left hand on the golf club? I definitely want to be able to interlock (not overlap), but figured I would be compromising the grip since we seem to lock that finger tight at the beginning. Great tutorial thanks a lot.
Yeah I read the chapter again and the pressure points are really the other 3 fingers, so I probably shouldn’t have been nervous about interlock. ESP if tiger does it. Thanks again will refer back to your video.
I developed a different version of the overlap... I think it may be used by some people when putting but I did it because at the time I had a blister and it stopped the rubbing. So what I do is the index finger of the top hand, overlaps the bottom finger of the bottom hand. It's quite comfortable. Your thoughts?
Wow - that’s an interesting concept! Do you think this grip evolved because he had the “draw/hook” issue in his career? I think I might end up with a closed clubface at address …. But trying to fave the ball could be a dream come true! Might just stick with Eureka!!!
Hey Steve - do you think that adopting the Hogan grip - with a stronger grip and with less pressure with RH fingers you could really have a lash at the ball without sending it way left?
You're right. It feels weird. Everything you change in your grip and swing feels weird at first. This appears to work really well though. Thanks Steve. You too, Ben...
When you pivot fast anti-clockwise, and the left arm rotates and reconnects to the left pec, if you have a strong grip you will hook it low left. Most people don’t pivot on and on and on to the finish, the club never unloads, the toe never goes ‘out’ to the ball, the face is open, they slice it right and then to avoid that, they throw the hands at it or go back to a strong grip. When the solution is to pivot even more and even more ‘left’, not to strengthen the grip or stall flip.
Steve, I've been overhauling my 40 years old crap rubbish casting swing into the best I can do hogan style. As you have, Ted Hunt did a brilliant job decoding Hogan's intents in two books, "The Magical Devise" and "Short Game Simplified". There is a drawing on the top right of page 5 in "Five Lessons" that looks like the thumb is square on top of the shaft/grip versus slightly to the right. My only question, I deciphered that the right thumb is actually on top of the club vs slightly on the right side of the grip, pointed at the ball based on Hogan's drawings and Hunt's description, as Hogan doesn't really cover the thumb in enough detail. Also, apparently, Hogan initially placed the left thumb "long" or relaxed on the shaft and evolved to the left thumb being drawn up "short" against the right palm vs under the right palm, UNLESS he wanted to hit a cut. What are your thoughts?
Interesting video- the very rare golf video that is not instruction per se, just interesting historical content. There's more than one way to skin a cat and hit a golf ball. When I was a kid I had a really weak interlocking grip and a handsy swing with a big turn. Fifty plus years later, I need a really strong, 10 finger grip down at the base of the fingers, or every shot is weak and left. Looking back, I compensated for the weak grip with lots of flexibility that I no longer have. A really strong grip squares the club face without effort, and is easier on my hands.
Steve you explain and demonstrate the Hogan swing better than any PGA pro on youtube.
@@Peter-we8iw thanks Peter👍👍

Showing the bowing and cupping at the top of your backswing was completely new to me. Your explanations are so in depth and helpful. Thank you sir.
Best instructional video on TH-cam seen them all, very concise , not patronising , I'm a fan
EXCELLENT JOB WITH CLEAR EXPLANATIONS AND DEMONSTRATIONS.
This is the most detailed instruction/demonstration of the Ben Hogan's grip...very fitting for my Ben Hogan's golf swing. Now my golf swing fundamentals complete! Thank you very much Steve....Cheers!!!

Thanks for the video on Hogans grip...I was taught this grip many years ago and lost it over thr years....I will give it a try at the range soon.
Glad to help
The only thing that’s improved my game has been your tips and some old Greg Norman videos now on TH-cam. Norman’s ‘mesh grip’ really helped me.
The Shark! 🦈
That was one helluva vid, Steve. Great job of putting together the sensibility of weaker grip and eureka system. Well done.👍
Another brilliant video - I really look forward to them as your dry wit and common sense just make them so interesting and useful
I’ve noticed in my videos I come over the top a lot. I was trying this and the swing for last hour and it just feels very natural. I’m not trying to force anything. Thank you for a great explanation.

Tried the Hogan grip today and was extremely pleased with the result. Thanks very much
Nearly 60k subscribers 👍 Very well deserved Steve. Great content delivered with a good sense of humour.
I’m sure 100k will come soon.
Great video and one of the few I've ran across relating the connection of body movement with different grips
Love how you explain how the grip and pressure points affect body mechanics and swing plane. That's what I'm trying to learn. Great vid

Started reading the book today very good and well explained
Can't wait to try it out. Feels so much more comfortable than a strong interlocking grip and I can twist the face closed and less open about the same. Guess it depends on one's orthopedic situation.
Excellent review of Mr. Hogan’s grip and body rotation to square up the club face!

Great lesson, Steve. Hogan was a master. This is one of the best videos on the grip I have scene.
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for the incredible detail in describing Hogans grip. I started out trying to teach myself to play from Hogans book.
Great video. Bought his book about a month ago and your videos really compliment it 👍
Thanks Steve, great clip and well explained.
Great video as usual, cheers Steve
You taught me something thought I was doing it right I was all wrong thanks Steve you are the man

Excellent instruction!
Really enjoy your channel. One of the best out there now to learn and overall info. Great stuff.
Good job explaining the hogan grip
I’m a big fan of the Hogan grip and the left hand is about the same as my own but I’m a long way from understanding how to hit the ball by turning the body by the left waist and creating that draw. It’s something I would love to do though. Great vid

Thanks Steve. I’ve been using the Eureka swing for a couple of months now. It has helped me a lot. My bad shot is a hook. I do bow my wrist in my back swing. Hopefully this video will help me straighten things out. I’ll definitely be trying weakening my grip.
Excellent idea for a video Steve. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Steve I’ve been using the swing tips you showed with good results now to put the grip into play and see where it takes me , I let you know cheers
Love the Hogan series! Keep em coming Stevo. 👍
Today I used Ben Hogan short and low back swing the ball came out like a rocket it was like magic just after 31 years
Great vid Steve! I have been trying to get rid of my cupped left wrist at the top while using a strong grip with mixed results. Went to the weak Hogan style grip ...Bingo.
Many thanks for this info Steve. I used to have a copy of the Hogan book but sent it to a charity book shop years ago. Hey ho.
Great grip demo!
I saw a slo mo swing analysis of Tommy Fleetwood last week - he actually lifts his right thumb off the shaft on the backswing. Just brilliant Steve, thank you.
Thank you very clear instruction.
Steve great video , one question do you have your elbows bent at the set up
Great series so far! Learning a lot! Making my golf swing feel brand new based on old tried and true information has been wild.
still waiting for a vid with a kilt
I developed a different version of the overlap... I think it may be used by some people when putting but I did it because at the time I had a blister and it stopped the rubbing. So what I do is the index finger of the top hand, overlaps the bottom finger of the bottom hand. It's quite comfortable. Your thoughts?

You're right. It feels weird. Everything you change in your grip and swing feels weird at first.
This appears to work really well though.
Thanks Steve. You too, Ben...
Looks like a much more and connected swing Steve? What was the main feeling ya had please ?
Steve can you show this grip without a glove as it gives a better idea where it sits in the left hand. Thanks
Hogan was double jointed. He was a freak athletically for a such a slight built man. Incredibly strong and flexible
Excellent as always.. JB / NC
Great video!
I've never seen a Dead Cat on a body mic pretty cool maybe I've just not been paying attention till now... nice vid man.
For such a tall guy, he can replicate hogan's swing and drills very well
When you pivot fast anti-clockwise, and the left arm rotates and reconnects to the left pec, if you have a strong grip you will hook it low left.
What was the video were you from the top pinched the club with the 2 middle fingers of the right hand
Hogan was one of a kind.
I heard that Hogan cupped his wrist at the top and didn't bow it. On the down swing he waisted it from a cupped to a bowed position.
Will try this tomorrow, and. Report back
Great video steve! Good to see you’re take on Hogans fundamentals keep up the good work. 👍
Does the stance need to be a little open? Line tool on ground open?
