  • What is the history of the word "queer"? It's a bit controversial, but let's dip a toe into what this has meant over the years.

I use Queer, and here's my reasoning:
first of, LGBTQIA2S keeps expanding (which is fine), but i can't keep up, and i don't want to unintentionally leave any grouping out.
second, Queer is actually pronouncible in conversation, LGBTQ isn't.
and third, and finally, this is the big one: you can't just remove a letter from "Queer", and by doing so intentionally exclude a group (like say the LGB alliance does), but bad actors like them most certainly can intentionally leave parts of LGBTQIA2S out, if they want to...
I'm a 40yo (age is relevant in these things, due to change of language) trans woman, polyamorous pansexual/lesbiromantic... I use queer, because at some point that also becomes too much of a mouthful.
and yes queer, as well as the Danish words for the F slur, and Sissy have been used against me during my childhood, mostly the latter two, so to me using queer whcih i am comfortable with, also feels a bit like fighting back.
now, i don't mind others using LGBTQIA2S, (or LGBT if that is too mcuh of a mouthful) that's peoples own choice, but i'm queer as they come, and i'm embracing that and the term.

thank you for addressing that mot everyone wants this term used on them. im definitely not comfortable with being called that and have been called mean things over it. i will never refer to the community as that and wont hate anyone who does. as long as they accept that i am lgbt, but not queer

I also think, about the last bit, that the further we get to stray from the hrutful uses, the more the term can be accepted. i sort of compare it to how terms like spaz or the r slur are still in an ick state. commonly used to degrade despite some reclaiming these terms for their disabilities. Most would still feel ick by these words heing used around or at them but if the world continues on a path of open-mindedness one day, then that likely will shift to a more reclaimed community term of inclusion (or people will continue at each other's throats because since when was peace and joy more fun than hate and war i suppose)

Definitely an interesting topic! I've always found myself using queer because I don't think any other labels really 'work' as well. Queer Nation would be an interesting topic to cover in the future!

I’ve touched on Queer Nation in my video “A Brief History of Lesbians”, but I will definitely add Queer Nation to my list of broader topics to cover. Thanks for the suggestion!

I Stil don't understand why LGB needed to evolve into LGBT and then after this so many new things get added that I don't even know a way to stay up to date for the next letter.

From my experience, it is a way of showing acceptance to smaller groups in the community, which may be excluded even by those in the community.
So with the inclusion of Trans under the LGBT umbrella, it’s a way to say “we see you and accept you”.
As far as “staying up to date on the acronym” goes, I find a lot of people are perfectly accepting to keeping the acronym to “LGBT” or “LGBT+”. I find it’s generally understood that this has been accepted as “the acronym” for years at this point, and that’s okay.
While it is nice to have other identities included in the acronym, most folks are pretty accepting of those using “LGBT”, as it shows acceptance for a broad amount of the community.

@@theocdenby but what do LGB and the rest have in common besides the minority status?
I tried to understand this but it also just seems to me like the LGB as a movement was successful and therefore the rest wants it too and just enters. Even in the LGB are tensions that are not resolved since the 1969.
This also makes the "acronyms" somehow strange to me that some are directly opposing each other but still put under the same umbrella (Asexual and Pansexual for example).
It even went so for that some from the LGBT started to also incorporate racial minorities which is shown in the "progressive pride flag". In the end this progression can be just summed up as being anti Heterosexual and white.
Also what is the reason for adding more Acronyms when LGBT+ already means all? And where does this acceptance end? (I mean it as a question of "do all minorities deserve this acceptance?)

@@ichmich9324my question is why are you using “LGB” instead of the full acronym “LGBTQIA+”

@@Whatisthisgremlin because the last one I heard of as a whole is LGBTQQIP2SAA Or LGBTQIA2+ ( I saved this in my notes, because who can remember this?)
I use LGB and LGBT+ Separately because LGB is way more consistent in its own and I still struggle to see the reason why all Minority related groups should be included. Where I even struggle to see why some stuff is even a group like the two spirits or the Questioning.
It gets even more convoluted when you shift the scale like for example when you go globally.
Thanks to the progressive Pride flag also all of the sudden is race also included with POC people..... But globally whites are a minority and I don't even see why Race should be even considered to be included in such a Topic at all.
The more I learn about it the stranger it gets and that LGB and LGBT+ is just the start

      @Whatisthisgremlin 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

@@ichmich9324 well the T is just to stand for “transgender” & the + in the acronym includes everyone, and some ppl even write it acronym as just “LGBTQ+”. But why are you including race in a topic about orientation & gender?? But since u bring it up, 2 spirit seems mostly in the Native American culture, as that’s where its origin is.
