  • Learn side stance Karate fighting style from full contact champion Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, interviewed by Jesse Enkamp (The Karate Nerd). This point sparring footwork is popular in Sport Karate, but MMA fighters in UFC like Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson love using the bladed stance for successfully keeping their opponent at long range distance. This is a great tactic for side kicks, hook kicks or blitz striking combinations. Visit www.karatebyjes... to learn more.

My Tae Kwon Do instructor based a lot of his teaching on Bill's fighting style, though one thing he added was that we also blocked a lot with the shin of our lead leg. So if someone was coming in, we also had three options for blocking, as we'd block low with our shins, mid and high with our hands. Bill's contributions to the practice of Martial Arts are definitely massive and not to be understated.

I will never forget...he uses his left leg and 3 kicks, side kick, round house and hook kick (often in combos). • @Msosbog
      @Msosbog 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Agreed. Though a little clarification: Bruce Lee's JKD concepts actually predate Bruce Lee. They are older martial art concepts that Bruce brought together in a hybrid-like system (not a style). Most of these were regarded by kung fu masters as closely guarded secrets and in combination with teaching westerners, Bruce was not very welcomed by the old school practitioners. For example the intercepting fist is actually reading, or "intercepting" the intent of the opponent; This is a very old method in kung fu usually described as reacting second but striking first. Bruce's innovation was combining these methods, or "hacks", and presenting them in a way that can be adopted and integrated into literally any style. For example Chuck Norris was a student of Bruce Lee, but Chuck's style was Tang Soo Do.
I would say it's very similar to what Jesse is doing with his, if I may, hybrid style of Karate.
I hope no one is offended as I mean no offense. Respect and love to all present and past as we continue to grow and learn from eachother.
      🙏👍

I did one session with GM Bill Wallace in Brisbane Australia 25 years ago approx, he was as enthusiastic then as he is in your interview. He walked into the stadium and I RE-learnt the most valuable lesson, that I taught all my students from that moment on, NEVER judge a book by its cover. GM Wallace is and by the look of your video still is a supreme athlete a Gentle-man. Oh and he can smile while he is kicking you IN THE HEAD! I CAN STILL SEE HIM now teaching us almost 100 Black belts of all levels. Then we started sparring I was in ore of this great man he stopped us all a few moments later and reminded us he loves to kick the harder you kick the more I like, But remember how many professional fights you have had and I have had???? I love mr Wallace and have been blessed to train with mr Wallace on more than a few occasions . I’m also an MMA / bjj coach - Back in his time , yes that style and stance worked and he was a beast with it for my sport. Bladed stance , in my opinion should be done but limited , due to the ability to easily have your back taken in my sport MMA [ self defense because even thugs know “take the back “ and choke). Lead leg kicks can more easily jammed and or open to being rendered soft and opportunities for “takedowns” are handed over on a platter. Mr Wallace is a phenomenal athlete and was an absolute beast that could pull this off. I’m not saying it wouldn’t work , it’s just a tool, many people that are handy can’t use a “wood lathe” but it’s still a good tool. I don’t think it replaces a hammer, and saw. The thing I took from him that is 100 is , be on the attack , speed works , and fakes and set ups are necessary. Mr Wallace is a national treasure and I would never say a cross word about this man.

After watching the Seagal videos and now this on with Wallace, it’s amazing to see how mobile and strong these guys still are. Seagal is, I believe, 70 years old in those videos, and Wallace is, I believe, 73 years old in this. Pretty amazing! Maybe you could look into if there is something to this “fountain of youth” of continuing training martial arts throughout one’s life, Jesse?

Try bjj and kickboxing. We have twd black belt guys come in all the time to the gym I go to. They are usually caught off guard when they get punched in the face. Obviously it’s not full power because that’s just being a dick and would ruin the gym atmosphere.
Lots of twd guys after they get black belt come to learn bjj. That’s fun stuff there. Plus you get good a ground game. Twd kicks are pretty good. It’s interesting seeing those guys come in sparring against kickboxing style. In my opinion Muay Tai is better after sparing first hand with both. To be clear I do the kickboxing classes once a week but do bjj 4-5 days a week. It’s a personal preference.

I am a taekwondo fighter too, sideways is the first thing we learn, less target. Then not to get hit (keep moving). Then side kick. Must admit my sabum knows multiple styles of fighting and is a cop, so he makes us aware of other styles, how to counter and how to defend ourselves in the streets (of course first rule, go away when you can ;) ).

Something -I didn't hear him talk about- he only touched on, was the fact that by using the sideways stance you have *minimized your opponent's target* making your body _as thin as possible_ and then as Bill points out, you also have all sorts of other advantages in your *counterstriking* .. The sideways stance is criminally underutilized in MMA due to pure dogmatic training standards in the current era.. My guess is someone who is totally unorthodox in this regard will come along and have a lot of success with the side stance and it will return to fashionable for training and the absolute greatest fighters will be able to switch between the each of the orthodox square up stance / side stances as well as orthodox / southpaw stances seamlessly, all depending on the position of the opponent, to be as effective as possible a la Lerdsilla or "The Matrix" Vasily, or Michél Pereira, etc.. The absolute ELITE will all be blessed with this ability, regardless of natural ability to achieve their goals and success in MMA, and the rest of combat sports in general.
    That's my prediction, at least.
    We'll see how it goes.
    Time will tell.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    His mind is so quick.
To think he entered Karate with a bad knee and used what worked for him and totally dominated.
Bill is absolutely right about allowing injuries to heal.
I had coaches who were from the "no pain no gain" camp, "walk it off" or "you'll be alright, now get back in there". They just wanted to win and they cared more about their image and their job than the athlete. I suffered then and when you get old those injuries come back to haunt you. Then, your coaches are doctor's now and you get pills to take just so you can get outta bed some days.
    He's a very good teacher!

Always fun to hear Bill Wallace. Thanks Jessie. One thing of note that sideways stance was the default stance of the 70's because groin kicks were still open. If you were in a forward stance back then you lost quickly point matches. The forward stance was transitional if you were inside. You don't want to be sideways on the inside and catch hooks/ridge hands.
