  • Jesse Enkamp a.k.a. "The Karate Nerd" teaches Icy Mike from Hard2Hurt a traditional Okinawan Karate kata called Gekisai (Ichi).
Whether you practice Muay Thai or Kyokushin Karate, all martial arts are just variations on the same combative themes. By learning from each other, we can gain a new perspective on our own style.
I hope this video inspires modern MMA fighters and athletes to connect with traditional martial arts, just like Icy Mike ‪@hard2hurt‬

My respect for Jesse has increased so much after this. Not only did he find humor in Icy Mike's original video from last year, but he also took time to give him an old school Karate lesson this year. And I do believe Mike learned some things that he can use in his own training and possibly with his instruction to his students. The day you stop learning is the day you stop breathing.

A piece of advice my father gave my younger brother recently(hes one of the sensei in our dojo) for hip movements is to think of it like a bow: the first movement is to gather power in the clambering of the punch, like the drawing of an arrow, and the second is to release the punch and follow through with the power, like how a bowstring pushes foward on the arrow as it releases. Maybe this would be helpful to a beginner like mike?

This guy reminds me of my 1st teacher. I was 7, the karate kid just came out, and this European man who studied tar kwon do in Korea moved to NY, and began teaching kids on a condo tennis court for $1 a class. Got my green belt. Same energy and personality as this guy.

I really like this video because I have been in the gentleman with the beard 🧔 situation. Not style wise but fraud wise none the less. I was put off with traditional Asian martial arts because no one gave the meaning behind the katas. Also coming up in a rough neighborhood, you need results yesterday. Not months or years. I like that Sensei Enkamp confronted his critic with understanding and a willingness to inform. Shows a lot of maturity and wisdom. I would have blown my stack. Nice nice video.

    Hi Jesse,
I am delighted that this clip was made - both you and Mike have a lot to offer the global martial arts community - respect to both of you for meeting each other half way.
By the way, Icy Mike doesn't hate anyone - his sense of humour involves (as he says himself here) a lot of clowning around. However his channel is serious and he regularly addresses difficult topics and answers questions in the comments.
    All the best from Germany,
    OSS

@Jesse Enkamp, I think that what you did in this video demonstrates 100% of the true spirit of Karate! You have transformed an individual's negative comments into a positive teaching for him as well as for you and for us (karate nerds). For me that's next level of Karate! It's a great lesson of life, and I hope one day to reach this level of true Karate! Thank you for every you do for Karate-Do! Oss!!!

Jesse, how you managed to turn something like this in to a positive thing is really clever, so congrads!:) how to react in stresfull moments, how to see things as they really are and not let our ego and emotions take over, how to accept "a punch"... is something that traditional karate teaches us if practised as it should be - also as a synergic suplement to meditation practises. This is at least how karate is taught at our dojo.
The way you reacted so cool also has to do with the fact that you are a traditional karate practitioner 🙂

This is extremely respectable. Thank you both of you for teaching me a very valuable lesson today. I love to see how it’s possible to end conflict without an argument and mockery and today I learned that. Love how you decided to give a free class and I love seeing him willing to learn and see what you are all about without judgment, and hell, he saw it man ! The look he has when you are performing and hearing the wind blow from your power is just the face of Amazement and respect. Incredible man. Thank you for helping me return to my senses and train again.

The most important part of karate: Respect for self, others and expressing one’s strength through the integrity, dignity and sincerity of one’s own actions. Unjustified anger is a weakness. Aggression is the last resort and action is only taken when there is no alternative. You are a true martial artist and warrior Sensei Enkamp.

Thank you for this! Excellent positive energy. Great that you reached out and great that he accepted. I love that! Often in my experience the detractor is unwilling or unable to learn, good that he emptied his cup a bit and turned off his ego to learn. Some of my favorite moments in my 34 years of martial arts experience is seeing these connections, collaborations and moments of mutual respect.
    Respect!
