The first time you try VR, you feel weird because all of your flat monitor references are not valid anymore, and you need to learn to drive again. But once you get used to it, it is amazing, and everything you learn will work in real life. You have to try VR in an online race with a full grid, that's when you will enjoy it more, when you are battling side by side and you see it like real life, that's the most WOW I had with VR SimRacing.

I use the original Pimax Crystal headset. For me, even triples aren't satisfying anymore. I'm significantly faster and more consistent in VR. For clarity, I'm lucky enough to have zero issues with extended use, weather its motion sickness or headaches. I do have twin fans mounted on my rig on either side of my wheelbase because it does definitely get hot. I would recommend the 15mm face pad and the comfort topstrap. both increase the comfort and keep it in the sweetspot. I'd also suggest AMS2, nothing is better in VR. LMU, although still in work progress, got a new VR update and looks pretty good too. VR is definitely more work, but when you get it dialed in, there is no substitute.

@@graemacinnis1202 thanks for the advice and for sharing your experience! I think with the upgraded face pads and the fans it would make the experience a lot more enjoyable for me! I love the immersion of VR, and I am sure it would help me improve too. If I can fix the comfort I might consider using more regularly!

I would like to ask if when you move your head, do experience some movement lag? Like when you quickly look left, does the headset physically lag behind your movement due to inertia?

    • @graemacinnis1202
      @graemacinnis1202 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@edwardt8194 The response is instantaneous, I've never experienced any lag either with the Crystal or PSVR2. Having that issue would more than likely be the result of either really bad settings, or hardware not up to the task of VR. It definitely requires more robust hardware to get the most out of it. I can imagine view lag would be absolutely unplayable. For a frame of reference, I'm running a 7950X3D with 64 GB of 5600 ram and a 4090, so i can run any VR right now at ultra settings at 90 fps without any throttling, but I realize that's not an option for everyone. The crystal, either regular or light, is resource intensive because of the clarity, so plan accordingly. I will say, I have a PSVR2 for my PS5, so I got the adapter for pc just to see how it worked, and I will say I was impressed, I used it for a week instead of the crystal, and never felt I was being cheated. Is the crystal better? Of course, but when you figure the price to performance and the lower spec needed to run it, it's a very good option, it's also a less intrusive wearing experience. For me, it's not a big deal, I have the comfort strap, 15mm face pad, and I run the HonsVR lenses for my Rx so I don't have to wear my glasses. I do 8 hour stints no problem, but I realize that's not common for most people, so maybe a smaller, lighter headset suits some people better. This got away from me a little, but to sum it up, if you have appropriate gear, you won't get any lag from head movement to what you see, it's just like real life.

    • @edwardt8194
      @edwardt8194 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@graemacinnis1202 I get that but I'm talking about the physical lag in real life, not on the screen. Think like a fishing rod. If I wiggle it the tip goes back and forth lagging behind your actual movement. Given the size of the crystal, my concern is in that the quick movement from side to side would create a similar lag that your eyes need to adjust to. The reason I ask is because I have a motion rig with a G2 and although the movement lag in the headset is not much, it is still noticeable. I am in the market and am thinking of Bigscreen Vr because it seems improbable that it could be affected by this.

Sim racing so much easier in VR, especially properly judging your brake points, distances to other cars and being able to look into the apex. Situational awareness is much better too.

I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend getting a wind simulator setup. The constant wind helps fight dizziness and nausea, but the added immersion is incredible. When you get speed curving correct (as you turn left, the air intensifies on the left but not the right, etc) it literally can't be beat.

Imagine yourself sitting in real car and driving it - that's what VR user sees. By adding extra accessories - bass shakers, or SLIP ANGLE system, motion system, Wind simulator, Qubic system Belt tensioners will just add to experience and transform it next to real racing for cheaper and safer...

I only race in VR, the depth perception and being able to look in to the apex is so much better than a single screen, even just on a quest 3. I haven't got room for triples. Once you get used to VR its hard going back to flat screens. The main downside is insurance racing, VR for over 1 HR races gets trying.

One of the advantages of the older valve index was the USB front compartment. I installed a fan on it and it did well to keep the hot air off my face. My new quest 3 gets jot, but I found if you face a fan towards you, it regulates your temperature quite well. Lastly. In games like sims, you don't need the headstrap as tight as in a shooter or more action based game. So you just need to adjust the top strap so it can balance at the correct height then loosen it for better airflow. Just remember it'll feel weird when you turn your head tho haha.

Honestly, V.R. is always a love/hate battle. It's quite common to think you've finally worked it out, and then something will change without your permission (last time it was Valve/Steam changing the scale resolution, the time before that it was the cable on my router needed to be changed for some reason).
V.R. is great but it's still fairly early days.
I've had the Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, Oculus Rift S, Valve Index, Quest II and Quest III.
I ended up selling my Quest III and going back to Quest II; I just couldn't get comfortable with the Quest III.
Quest II with Virtual Desktop and a WiFi-6 router, is amazing. I turn on Spacewarp (which asks the P.C. to generate X amount of frames per second and the headset makes up the missing ones, so it's less work for the P.C.) Snapdragon Upscaling (makes it higher resolution by things that the chip can do), clock boost, and sharpening algorithm, and it looks fantastic.
I'm not a sim driver, I was into Half Life Alyx, and flying my helicopter (I made some helicopter controls).
I think what a lot of people don't get about V.R. (and I didn't know it either) is that it's in 3D. It gives people depth perception. So if you want to feel like you're enclosed in the car, V.R. will be amazing for you.
Comfort wise, it depends on the headset really and the strap. The strap there on the Pimax, looks pretty good but maybe you would be more comfortable with a weight on the back for a counterbalance.
I find it best to loosen everything on the straps, then get the best visual placement, and start tightening things up one by one.
You did very well to troubleshoot the clarity issues, a lot of people would just give up and say it looks bad.
As you have V.R. you have to try Half Life Alyx - at the very least, set Russell's Lab as your home in Steam Home.
Assetto Corsa EVO in V.R. is going to be great.

Thanks for sharing your experience and feedback! It's good to hear from people that have tried multiple headsets and setups. I think you make a good point. I love the experience, but I am too impatient to deal with all the little things haha. I like to jump in my sim and be ready to race right away.
I will definitely try it in a different setting though, outside of racing. I sure will love it.

Yeah, Steam VR is terrible. The sooner you bypass that, the better. I was using open composite with the Open XR toolkit and Pimax XR runtime to bypass steam vr and huge gains. Even better now, the new Pimax play version has all that built into it so you don't have to fool around with multiple software pieces if it's not your thing.

      @@SarahNocchi Unfortunately that's exactly right.
I worked on my own helicopter controls and it took weeks to get everything to work (took me years to design and make them - and they're still pretty ugly), and as soon as I thought I'd cracked it, something else broke, or X Plane would have a bizarre bug like the sound would go off. Then you'd get that to work and Steam would do something, then Windows, then something updates without your permission and something else breaks............. hehehe then a cable decides it's not happy and you have to buy a new one. But when it's working, you can have really nice moments.
You do get a feel for it all, and you do learn what's most likely to be going wrong, but even for me after years, sometimes you just get a bizarre bug out of nowhere.
You did really well to configure the V.R. when it looked really blurred. I'd have to look up how to do that as well. I wouldn't know.
Aye, V.R's definitely not "out the box". Not the high level, good quality stuff.
You have to play Half Life: Alyx. It's the best V.R. game that's been made yet. And it might sound daft, but I enjoy Google Earth in V.R.. I like to go to places like Rome, or New York, and look at the buildings and wonder who lives in them.
Metro Exodus is coming out in V.R. and that looks like it's going to be good.
      Happy racing :) 👍

Thanks for sharing your experience. Pimax Crystal Light is my first VR and first PC ever (I’m over 45). Been waiting for good VR for over 5 years.
Was struggling to get a perfectly sharp image clarity in both eyes simultaneously (either one was good or other). So when I close left eye, the R eye image is clear. When I close R eye, the left eye image is not perfectly clear. If I adjust headset a millimiter or two the left becomes clear but Right goes off. Was getting nauseous too, I know it's part of getting over motion sickness but image did not help either.
STUDIOFOAM sorted the issue, kit works a treat. Now both eye images are perfect sharp and results in next to real life image in Crystal Light VR. I took Pimax Crystal Light original face pad off. Did use Studiofoam one spacer and stick soft Grey Fabric pad on top. Now aftermarket face pad doesn't get warm what makes VR experience lot nicer.
I only simrace. In Assetto corsa BMW 235i Racing steering wheel has tiny digital red numbers what now looks absolutely clear. I mean same clarity as I would see on my steering wheel in sim rig real life. Alfa Romeo Guilietta and Mito has small ABS info writing on bottom of wheel base, now it’s perfect. Mazda MX5 cup Steering wheel LCD display is sharp and clear. Now I can confidently say I will keep Crystal Light and sell of PSVR2 what I bought second hand to test while waiting for Pimax. The only issue with Pimax Crystal Light is the sweet spot is very very TINY. I mean if I move Headset a millimiter or two off the ideal position the image is not perfect. I still wonder if it is supposed to be so or my lenses are from the funny batch. At the moment I can say I am happy with Crystal Light and do recommend it highly.

Thanks for the input on this VR headset. Lets be honest we all want the most realistic experience to actually driving a real race car, however we're not racing a real car so we want to have fun. This isn't a job, but recreation and fun and I want it to be just that. Having something that large (even though Sarah noted it wasn't that heavy) to me is bulky and I'd rather not have that hanging off my head for 2-3 hours of racing. I went from a single wide screen monitor to triple monitors about 6 months ago and it was amazing enough. VR is great don't get me wrong, but what if the VR technology was in a pair of glasses (sunglasses) this would be FAR more tolerable than having a bulky headset strapped to your head with a crank to tighten it and give you a headache after an hour. Think about that 🙂

But if I’m just having fun I sometimes use screen just for convenience. I do agree though, if you are racing a few hours it can get a bit horrible due to sweat and heat, and if making TH-cam videos it’s not the easiest, boosted media came to same conclusion on that. Honestly the Pimax is all about having FOV and a lot of pixels, for easy of setup, comfort for long session it isn't it. Its too bulky for me as well. I much prefer my Quest 3 (not the 3S). Altho I'm really not into Meta in general I still 100% recommend it if you want something that you can wear for longer period of time, the light Q3 with its pancake lenses + Bobo head strap with battery is great for VR, convenience and you can have a long session wireless or with a wire for better image quality. Altho I just wish the Valve Deckard would come out already. The BigScreen Beyond is something else too, super super small and light the only reason I didn't buy it is that I don't have an iPhone nor does my friends and family so I can't easily take the required scan of my face. I'm really not into bulky headsets, ofc Pimax does have its place but comfort and ease of use is too important for me and I don't think its a great first impression of where VR is at RN. (Pimax require too much tinkering for some applications and the weight is a deal breaker for me)

I needed both. Wearing VR full time for long race sessions is extremely uncomfortable for me, even after modifying head straps to improve comfort. Then the setup, configuration, compatibility with many games is so different. Might be ok if you play 1-2 Sims but I like to play nearly every racing game there is. Far too much effort to make VR work for that as it currently stands. I need to try something other than the Quest 2 but can't afford blowing more money on that.

PC VR still has a long way to go but developers are not doing enough to help improve issues or performance. GT7 with VR while not the best, it works so easily and is so simple to switch between using on TV/Monitor or VR. It will also likely (after patch) look a bit sharper than normal with new PS5 PRO. - See @4:58 for.......
Exacly like what you would experience with the Tobii Eye/Headtracking on that awesome monitor. Still you have not tried, ahhhhhhhhh.
No 3D and yes VR brings certain benefits but the option to better use the monitor to have a much more comfortable and for longer gaming sessions is possible.
What you dont eexpress enough is that your own PC specs are not capable to get the most out of this VR or that monitor.
Content is good but you really need to upgrade the PC to properly cover such reviews.
