My husband and I discovered your channel today. This video was very informative. The UC Berkeley joke was point on since we are from the Bay Area. So far you are the only TH-camr we found that shares our lifestyle in regards to food, gym and splurge when you can and keep on making money. We are followers now lol. We hope to retire soon and live in Thailand full time.
I think that you got it right, living comfortably without getting ridiculous. Then you're able to invest the money you have left over, to continue with the lifestyle you have.
Forrest, great video and the community appreciates you making these videos to get a more realistic sense of what a moderate, comfortable life costs in Bangkok. Only think I would change if I lived there would be a bigger place with way more room and possibly a really nice view up on a top floor. I’m sure it’s expensive but I would pay up to 1500-1800 USD a month for that. Your spot is cool but very small and eventually for me it would get annoying. Keep the videos coming.

In my opinion, this is far preferable to simply entering trades with little or no market understanding.
This is definitely a more realistic spending budget for expats in Bangkok. Before I came to BKK a year ago all the videos I watched on cost of living had it at about 1200 usd or lower. I don't feel as if I go out to expensive places ever, and usually try to stay to cheap areas, and I still spend on average $1800 USD a month. My rent and bills are exactly the same as yours as well.

Which is just 450-500 USD a month.
You can get a monthly bunny card for the sky train for just 30-50 USD.

Thx Forrest. This is a more realistic style of budget for me as my lifestyle is more comparable to what your doing. Im not trying to go there to penny pinch but to live a much better lifestyle. Cost on health insurance? ie. Saftey wing?

Your 3 estimations are correct . You have to add your visa cost and your health insurance . My opinion : the health insurance is compulsery but often costly for a good coverage.
I agree with you that visa and insurance should be added as well as some level of vacation/travel budget.

Thank you for sharing a more realistic cost of living in Bangkok. I was born in Bangkok but haven’t been living there for the pass 12years. My last visit was 4years ago and only for 10days. I just booked my ticket to visit Thailand this year in Aug-Sep and I’m struggling to estimate a daily living budget in Bangkok. I have no idea how expensive things are now. Hahahah, I love how you experience bar hopping there. And I’m with you I don’t like ppl pay my drink, I’m a working woman and I am happy to pay for my own drink and YES happy to treat others 👌😁

Thanks for showing us YOUR condo, Forrest! I really liked seeing a lived-in unit, as it's a good representation of what it might look like for a regular, single guy like myself.
Also, I agree 100% about putting health at the forefront of your priorities, though between P90X and Magnus Method options, as long as the condo has dumbbells, a cable system, and a pullup bar, I'm good.
On that note, I measure, weigh, and track my food every day. I understand going out to eat in Thailand is fast, cheap, and delicious (to put it mildly), but how would you recommend one go about tracking calories, carbs, etc? I would imagine street vendors and restaurants don't have nutrition labels, huh? Perhaps just an extra cardio session 3-4 times/week to be safe? Lol. First world problems, I know.

I came here to learn how to trade after listening to a guy on radio talk about the importance of investing and how he made $460,000 in 4 months from $100k. Somehow this video has helped shed light on some things, but I'm confused, I'm a newbie and I'm open to ideas.
Investing in crypto is a good idea, a good trading system would puts you through many days of success.
I've been making passive income monthly from crypto for over a year tho' I prefer trading with the help of a professional broker Nora Hendrix because she saves me time and reduces the risk of losing funds in trading as we all know how volatile the market is.

Exactly, the trick is to diversify your investment, don't panic when everyone else do and invest consistently.

I enjoyed the video Forrest, thanks! However, I feel like every cost of living videos I've ever seen misses something! Heres some costs I think you missed (although some of them might not apply to you or everyone):
internet subscriptions (netflix, dropbox, etc.)
health insurance
random health expenses not covered by insurance
new computer
new electronics
random household things you might need to replace every now and then like new pillow sheets
There are tons of things that aren't actually monthly bills but you do technically need to factor them into your budget. For example, lets say you buy a new computer for $1000 every 5 years. If you wanted to properly account for that you would need to figure out the monthly cost and add it to your monthly budget to make sure you can actually afford that new computer 5 years from now.
I feel like most "cost of living" videos miss these sorts of things, but they add up!
So my warning to anyone out there: if you think you can afford some monthly budget, say $2000 a month, you might be surprised that the actual cost is much higher than you expected because you forgot to account for all of the little things you spend money on! Your actual cost of living might be more like $2500 a month.

The reason my asking is I am planning to do 6 months there and 6 months in the US but not sure what route I should go as far as visa goes and what is the best VPN and internet service which I need the best internet as I will be working remotely. I was surprised that it only came to 2k a month. When you were rattling things off, I guessed 3k. We live a very similar lifestyle. But i dont drink. But i would get massages at least 2 times a week. Highly recommend if you dont get thsm.

I remember looking at that place before I left bkk, it's a pretty nice new condo, especially for the price. Though a bit on the smaller side with the units (newer condos seem to be smaller and smaller), the location is great with it being right next to a big grocery store and a variety of food in the area. For me, I found the cost of living in bkk to be about $1000 a month on average and about $1200-1500 on months where I really enjoyed myself with more eating out and going out with friends more.

Interesting to see. I thought about going more “out” with the condo, but choose to stay super-centered due to transportation connectivity. So I spent way less for grab taxi and use BTS. Like other people in the comments already mentioned, I would include the visa costs and insurance per months. I disagree that you can go out to frequent steak dinners with $2500 budget a month. Stake and similar Western food is very expensive in Bangkok. If you want to do that once or two times a week it will bomb your budget. $100 per person easily per dinner (red wine included).
Also it’s always interesting to see how well-maintained and modern the big condos out from the “center” Asoke, Phrom Pong, Thonglor are. They mostly offer a more high-quality facility. This motivates me to think about the condo situation twice and cut down unnecessary costs. In the same time it’s a way to get in contact with the younger experts and locals. In the high priced center condos you’re mostly living with conservative more “boring” people. Fancy, but not much going on.
I will definitely try out the egg noodle soup as breakfast option. I can also recommend spicy omelette with rice. This is what I choose on my way to work. Also I recommend the big food market in Asoke across from GMM Grammy, where you can find a variety of things. For example fresh mango smoothie with yogurt 700 mL around 40 baht. Matcha tea with coffee shot 50 baht. Amazing taste and very good prices.
By the way: Does anyone has new information about the long announced digital nomad visa? Two weeks ago I read on the Internet that it should come in 22. Appreciate any new info.

Nice vlog, and yeah someone else already mentioned that you forgot to include insurance and Visa costs. My current budget is like $1k/month in BKK and I'm actually not feeling too bad with the penny pinching. This includes occasional splurges, but definitely not as much as you. I'm glad to know that even living a bit more upscale is only around 2k-2500/month.
BTW let me know if you need someone to get the air fryer off your hands 😀 (just kidding hehe)

Based on my experience, my short term stay, I spend about 70-80%of my home town. I calculated based on long term stay, I could save between 60-70% in Bangkok based on Cost of Living Comparison by Numbeo. It is just based on estimate and my life style only. My town's average 1 bedroom is $2300 and I spent about $3000 food/dining out. I can retire now, if I spend less than $5000 and Bangkok is one of the city for my consideration.

By his budget Forrest eats out probably exclusively. He’s speeds almost $700 on food. From my understanding most people find it cheaper to eat out but you can get a rice cooker and some stove top cooking supplies and have at it. I’d like to have plenty of drinks and snacks in my apartment at the minimum myself! Lol
Definitely he rarely cook. I guess it would be cost more cheap if you go get grocery shopping and cooking yourself. You could just cut the cost down a little bit I guess

My wife and I followed our dream and moved to Japan, which is awesome, but we're now considering moving to either Thailand or Singapore, because the English level is so much higher. But damn man, life in Japan is so good, no other place on Earth does washrooms like Japan.

As Thai (25k salary), I'm living in a condo in Ladkrabang area. My electricitiy bills cost around 2,000thb, Gas for my car 2,000thb, Eating arounds 5,000thb (mid-premium dinner per week), 4,000thb for 28sq.m. studio-condo including WIFI. 3,000-4,000thb for pets, etc. i was surprised when i saw 800thb for your electricities.
@Kamil You can find those around outside area around Bangkok where it’s near the BTS line(Mostly directly connected are expensive) such as Onnut-Kheha station to the south and Sai Mai-Khu Khot station to the north of Bangkok.

Very interesting to see Bangkok now. I was stationed there from January 1968-June 1970, working for MacThai command. Would love to go back. A couple of Navy guys attached to my unit (Army) married Thai women and stayed. We used to go the the PX and buy cigarettes and whiskey then barter for cab drivers to take us to Pattaya. We stayed on the beach in a hooch in those days.

I lived in thailand for years... on a super tight budget... but i still found it really hard to accept drinks and food and even basic hospitality, at times, from some people.
But after a couple years in Cambodia...on the coast...on an even tighter budget... I learned to swallow my pride.
So can you share your monthly budget on an economic level please? I got a teaching job offer there and I’m trying to see if I can make ends meet especially with my newborn and his childcare expenses
Very informative! Very transparent for those of us who'd rather live more of a comfortable lifestyle. I'd have to factor in a few more things, so I think $3,000 a month would work for me, and that's probably being a bit generous. Thank you for giving me a baseline of what I can expect to spend in Bangkok per month.

Great advice. Although you can't predict the future; you can prepare. A financial advisor will help you to plan ahead by including *expectations* for items such as inflation and market declines so you can stay on track. Approximately 85% of those working with a financial advisor said doing so gave them a greater sense of financial comfort
I always had mixed feelings about hiring an advisor. For the record, I started working with Genevieve Glen Rogers and she manages about 70% of my investments, while I managed the other 30%. My philosophy is that I care more about my own money than anyone else, but Ms Genevieve Glen Rogers made me believe working with a financial advisor can never be compared with managing them yourself.

2000 to 2500 a month is still alot, you must have alot of savings to maintain this
He could easily half it he’s not concerned with budgeting. Hes living luxury for that. If you save 100k you can make 1k a week passively easily with covered calls on stocks.
He talks about being in the Service in other videos, so I assume he has some military retirement pension income.

Pattaya is much less polluted, has a massive ex-pat community, is easier to navigate, and you can find much bigger condos for the same price. As for cost of living, as you say it depends upon the individual and his tastes, but I would recommend anyone thinking of retiring to rent for 6 months then move along.
I came to Thailand 12 years ago and was very fortunate in my choice of location and people I met, all of whom were very welcoming and supportive. Whether it would have been the same in BKK I don't know, but Pattaya was very kind to me.
