    As you mentioned most rally games have wider roads to make it "easier", but in real life, combined with the rocket engines in Dirt series, you just accelerate to 420 km/h in each little straight and the physics engine just gives up. In reality it makes the completely opposite effect of what it's intended for. Narrow roads with realistic traction keeps the speeds down and makes it much more manageable.

      we really need to put the physics and modability of RBR into a modern engine.

    • @SimsRacingDesign
      @SimsRacingDesign ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suggest you take a look at rally mods for Assetto Corsa. Some of the stages are ported from RBR (e.g. Semetin, Hradek & Liptakov, Gestel, Peklo etc.) and there are lots of others that are of tremendous quality. This includes a 40km Monte Carlo stage which tremendously epic to drive. It can be somewhat tricky to find all the mods and stages because they can't be found in one place which is the case for RBR nowadays.
      There's also a fully-customisable co-driver mod and also voice packs for AC to make it even more authentic. The full AC package with well-developed car and stage mods is better than any other rally sim on the market. Mind you, AC rallying only focuses on tarmac though. You can drive gravel stages but the physics were never meant to cope with loose surfaces so it's not exactly enjoyable on that. However, I prefer tarmac over any other surface so I'm extremely happy. It's a modern tarmac RBR.

With proper tweaking youll have something really fun. I transitioned to WRCG after a really long RBR run and the feel was similar and my reaction times were almost the same. I think this is something to be noted. NOT SAYING WRCG HAS BETTER OR SIMILAR FF. Just saying the feel we got from the car is good and feels authentic, to the point where i could easily drive as fast as i can in RBR, without the need to "adapt" to a new simulation/physics. I don´t know what that means and i don´t intend to start a simwars here, but in my books its a WIN to Kylotonn.

    Dirt Rally 2 has stages that attempt to recreate real life stages, whereas WRC stages are based on real life stages, without attempting to be identical. I agree that this leads to more variety in WRC. This is unique to rally simulation as we all strive for 100% recreations in our track racing sims.

      DR2 doesn't use real stages either, I'm not sure where that came from (I think Codies actually made that claim). The longest stages of every rally in DR2 are shorter than the shortest stages from the real life rallies. Both the Kylotonn games and the DR games use stages based on real locations, they just have a different way of compressing the details into shorter stages.

  • @SimsRacingDesign
    @SimsRacingDesign ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Mr. GM, first of all I want to state that the stage design in the past few WRC games is fantastic.
    However, it's important to note that they are 95% fictional with the remaining 5% being iconic sections everyone knows (e.g. massive jump before the finish in Portugal). The stages in DR2.0 are 1:1 recreations of stages which are run in real life. The New Zealand stages from DR2.0 combined, were actually used in this year's WRC event.
    Because the stages are 95% fictional, the developers have a lot more freedom to add variation into their stages when it comes to the road surface or the environment. If you want to stick to authenticity, like the devs from DR2.0 did, that freedom is very limited. Personally I prefer authenticity over fictional but I do admit that KT Racing did a fantastic job in that regard.
    Also, the German stages in WRC Generations are also the ones with the most extreme (for lack of a better word) level of variation. Not many locations have that much of variation to them as German vineyard stages to be honest.
    When it comes to the width of the roads, I respectfully disagree with you. Driving flat out over the bumpy and very narrow sections in Poland makes your blood rush through your body. Argentina has plenty of very narrow and tight sections between rock faces. Scotland's roads are just slightly wider than the car itself. Greeces has long stretches of very narrow roads too, as does Sweden and Monte Carlo. Sure, in certain locations the roads might be somewhat wider than they are in real life but the same thing applies to certain locations in the WRC games.
    In regards to Germany for example, you can't compare the ones in DR2.0 to those of WRC Generations. Rally Deutschland is a very unique event due to the fact that they drive on two to three completely different areas each with their own characteristics. I would've preferred the vineyard stages in DR2.0 as well but they went with the iconic Baumholder military area where they usually compete on Saturday in real life.
    To wrap up my comment. What are your thoughts on the adjustments made to the physics compared to WRC 10? I know that the changes are based on the new regulations regarding the hybrid Rally1 cars but their adjustments also affect all the other cars. Personally, I believe their changes to the physics are a genuine step backwards compared to WRC 10, especially when it comes to the other car classes such as Rally2. I properly loved they way they feel in WRC10 but now with WRC Generations, I'm not a fan anymore.

      1:1 recreation of stages is way more desirable for rally fans and simracers. You could also mention what you've said in your review of Ypres in WRC10 and what they missed compared to real event.
      But overall in my opinion KT did terrific job designing those fictional stages. I absolutely get your point about creative limitations when going with 1:1 approach. To be fair though, DR2.0 also misses some characterics about real stages. If you take Poland for example, there's could be more surface changes like brickroads in villages. Also trees and shrubbery are often even closer to the road. Which doesn't necessarily mean the road is narrower but the sensation is different.
      I guess that going fictional might've worked out better for KT Racing than if they had tried recreating real life stages. Firstly they could squeeze more variety in shorter stages/smaller map. Secondly they dodged another point of realism comparison to the Codies.
      I hope to see your full review of WRC Generations soon. I can't wait to hear your take on the physics.

    I can't imagine how much time is put into these stages. Making a single rally stage is very unforgiving with how much detail you have to put into while also ensuring the stage both feels good to drive and looks like a proper stage with realistic environments. So much work and detail may be put into an area that you blast past in 150kmh in a few seconds. RBR have a similar feeling in terms of detail. Compare that to a curcuit track (which also obviously requires lots of effort) where you will do endless amounts of laps on.

WRC stages are almost too narrow given how dodgy the side of track physics are, if you clip the tiniest thing it will send you flying. Snow bank physics are bad too, Dirt Rally is a good middle ground. Stages like Germany are just based on a different location to WRC.

When they took a year out between 7 and 8 the game changed completely. They built something awesome and incrementally improved it. The game is built by people who love rally, for people who love rally. I will be buying generations less for the content and more as a thank you to the developer for these amazing, amazing games. Eyes down for dlc, poor physics and the all new 'Rally driver life' mode where the driver can use real world money to buy new trowels for there garden shed. • @bwxmoto
    @bwxmoto ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have a theory about the wide stages in Dirt and most other Rally games. I always thought maybe it was because the physics model isn't tight or responsive enough to allow enough car control for narrow stages at speed.
    In Dirt games the physics seem to be kind of floaty, especially with lateral grip. If the stages were narrower, it would be very hard to keep the cars out of the walls since they're slower to respond to inputs and slower to rotate and also slide around so much laterally on the surface.
    Maybe that's why CM put in that annoying game mechanic where the edges of the track always seem to artificially pull you farther off the track, even if it wouldn't IRL. It was really bad in the snow IIRC. And that's the reason why you try to stay in the center of the road all the time, not to avoid the walls, but to avoid that artificial force pulling you farther off road. That's not realistic or fun.
    WRC games physics feel like they're running at a faster rate (not sure if actually is) , and the cars feel super responsive and rotate quicker compared to Dirt physics, at least that's my impression. Who knows.

    • @SimsRacingDesign
      @SimsRacingDesign ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's floating you want, there's plenty of that in the WRC franchise as well to be honest. The adjustments to the physics made for WRC Generations, makes that even more noticeable. The cars are constantly gliding and sliding when you push the car to its limits.
      DiRT Rally doesn't always have wide roads though. All the stages are more or less 1:1 recreations of real stages. In certain cases the roads might be slightly wider than in real life. However, driving flat out over the bumpy and very narrow sections in Poland makes your blood rush through your body. Argentina has plenty of very narrow and tight sections between rock faces. Scotland's roads are just over a car width wide. Greeces has long stretches of very narrow roads too, as does Sweden.
      Some of the road edges in a few locations are measures to prevent people from taking huge cuts as far as I'm aware. However, when it comes to the snow banks in Sweden, they work similarly as in real life in a way. You can use the snow banks to your advantage but when you hit them too hard or your nose gets into contact with it, your car will be sucked into the snow. Plenty of video footage out there that proves it.

      @@SimsRacingDesign I haven't purchased WRC G yet. Looked over the steam comments and reviews.. I might wait and see if they fix the sounds at all and the FF, and the braking before I pick it up. I have WRC 10 on PS5 and PC and the physics model seems so much faster and responsive in just about every way from Dirt Rally 1 and 2, especially car rotation.
      I do not think the way the physics model pulls your car to the walls in dirt especially is realistic at all. And it's way over done and simplified in the snow. It's just annoying and feels fake and wrong to me. I've driven a million miles IRL and triple that in sims and that's some kind of artificial game mechanic and no one will ever convince me otherwise. Just IMHO.
      I like Dirt Rally in spite of that though, in a lot of ways more than recent WRC games. I still have the entire WRC10 campaign to do so not in any hurry to buy WRC G. I hope they polish it up because those stages are seriously impressive.

      The only real downside of running incorrect ratio is that at times it can distort FFB and how linear things are.

    I think the latest WRC games are the best in terms of stage length and variety of environments. But I feel that Richard Burns Rally and Rallisport Challenge 2 beats WRC on road layout and road design. The stages in those games are a lot more technical. You have to set the car up before you arrive at the corner. The narrow roads in WRC are overdone. You can't do a Scandinavian flick if there is no space. In the WRC games I don't see any deep ruts, potholes or negative camber corners like RBR and RSC 2 Also the jumps in WRC are very poor compared to RBR and RSC 2.

      @@Guerilla_G Yes. There are some wide roads in Rallisport Challenge 2. But there are narrow roads too especially in Sweden, Monte-Carlo and the Hill climb courses. RSC2 has a great variety of everything roads surfaces and corner types. The car is always moving around so it's not easy. The best stages in WRC is easily Sweden where you have to link corners together and there is wide and narrow sections. A lot of the stages in WRC have long 5th & 6th gear roads with a hairpin at he end. Not many long radius 3rd or 4th gear corners or corners that opens or tightens on exit. WRC is weak on corner variations. And the cars are too stable. I haven't seen anybody lose the car landing from a jump or barrel-roll the car because of a bump in a corner.
