Isle of Skye Fishing Expedition

- I’ve wanted to visit Skye for quite some time, the idea of getting a boat on the water and taking in the unique scenery whilst wetting a line really appealed to me.
I loaded my VW Transporter with a 3.4m SeaPro and enough lures to last a lifetime and set off on a 1500 mile trip. The weather was always going to be an unpredictable factor, strong winds and heavy rain did make life challenging but there were short periods when it eased and allowed me to get stuck into the fishing.
It’s hard to know where to start with a coastline like Skye, it’s not really what I’m used to and I was just making educated guesses using Navionics. This proved a great way to catch pollock but that was all I really had much success with, I’m sure there are plenty of other species to catch but that will require some more research.
One of the most memorable aspects of this trip were the marine mammals that seemed to be everywhere and quite interested in the SIB, that combined with an incredible landscape made for some very special days on the water.
The boat that I’m using in this video is available from this affiliated link-

Thanks to all of those that identified the porpoise and minke !
They appear to be Harbour Porpoise, which along with Bottlenosed and Common Dolphin (and some others), also occur around the South West of the UK.
Definitely porpoises and minke. Very common alongside common dolphins, basking sharks and the two Hebridean Orcas John Coe and Aquarius. Still lucky to catch a whale on your first trip up here though ✅✅
Great as always mate, brought back memories of Sky, the fantastic Neist Point in paticular
Believe they were porpoise similar to dolphin just smaller and shorter snouts. Cracking vid also. 😊
Great vid ….thoroughly enjoyed it 👏🏻 add the beauty of Skye . 🎣🥃
Square slice , iron brew and a Caramel log…haste ye back 😁👍
The 2nd launching location is a great spot, was catching fish almost every drop below this big cliffs not even a mile from launch, beats Neist point in my opinion. Also had a run in with a local who was super helpful and kind. Skye is hard to beat.
I think they’re harbour porpoise .
Great video 👍🏻
Whale was a Minkie !
Minke Whale . Great video . Stepping out of your comfort zone shows true commitment to your channel. Well done .
Well done sir. That was some stunning scenery indeed. Seeing Minkys and Porpoise always a thrill and some tasty bronze gold bars of fish
The whale is undoubtedly a minke. Plenty of those around Scotland.
Whale looks like a Minke Whale. Great experience, thx for the video, very enjoyable.
Really enjoyed the trip Oban, beautiful scenery and good to see you cooking fish!
Fantastic video Oban as always 👏 I really enjoyed my trip up there this year, the place is covered in good Pollock!
Brilliant Oban , Skye is on our tick list , some nice pollock fishing to be had up there
Beauty, mate, thank you for sharing the adventure!
Lovely video, love the place only ever fished Skye from shore but always good fishing, particularly if u go the distance and go to the harder to reach spots. Fishing it from a sib looks immense. Keep the videos coming very informative, great watch👍🏻
Weather up here hasn't been good this year, but then again the weather on my Cornwall trip this year was a bit iffy with a 14 foot Orkney. Maybe next year will be better for us all.
WoW! One hour video from you Oban & an excellent watch as always!
Truly enjoyed every second of this, thank you!
Cheers, I cropped 4 hours of footage to make this video. The long ones are always the best to look back on
Giver some n get some Oban 🤘🏽
Brilliant. Just brilliant.
Love the Isle of Skye. Weather can be so unpredictable, but a stunning location.
A brilliant little adventure, any fish would be a bonus
Great video mate. Looks idyllic! Fishing not too bad either
Minke whale! I’ve fished up there from 14yr old,66 now. It used to be 3 hooks =3 fish till whole area was trawled dead in early 70,s. Yes good pollack around on headlands. You’d love fishing the Port Napier wreck opposite Kyle of locals h, it will dry out m above water on big springs. 45ft deep on hull side and 60 ft on deck side. It’s hoaching with pollock, certainly up to 15lb. You used to could catch off the shore plaice, dab,cod and thorn back rays. I extensively snorkelledplockton bay , and balmacara and didn’t see one flattie. Dogfish and pollock and conger are around though. Big pollock at stomeferry especially with sib. Stunningly beautiful area. Wee boats certainly most enjoyable way to fish!
very pleasant watch, well done.
Porpoises. Typically up to 3ft long.
Good to see you've finally got a high quality SIB! 😊
They are Porpoise. Get a lot around Scotland and also South West Wales - Skomer especially. I've also seen them off of the Lizard.
Class vid mate looks amazing!!
Come back up next year, this has been the worst 12 month I can remember,.
It would be nice to see your fish finder setup.
Another trip is needed, I’ll be avoiding the August crowds next time
Vanlife nice trip 🎣🤘🏼Scotland
Great video as usual. So you saw Porpoise and I believe a Minke Whale. We’ve been going up that area of Scotland for 15 years and you really could spend a week scratching around looking for marks and catch very little and miss some great spots. Last year we found probably the best pollock fishing in the UK not too far away where we were catching 3-4 pollock a time on feathers all over 10lb and that’s really not an exaggeration! You’ve had more boats than the Royal Navy!
It’s a bit overwhelming when you look at all the places it would be possible to get a sib down to the water. I didn’t find any double figure fish but the pollock did seem to be on every shallow bit of rough ground I fished.
To slow your drift a drogue will make a huge difference.
What an adventure !
So happy your back man
Minter mate
Great video mate😎
Great trip. You're great at explaining what and why too! Do you have any vids which talk about what you choose to wear? Including lifejackets e.g. auto/manual? Cheers.
Thanks for the feedback, the topic of what to wear on a SIB is something I will have to explore in more detail!
A wet towel is the best way to handle fish
Another good video and informative on the area I noticed you commented on the speed you were drifting have you ever used a drogue on your sib.
It’s something I used a lot when I started out on a kayak and sort of forgot about. It’s definitely a useful bit of equipment
A Minkie whale.I think they grow up to thirty feet long. They are named after a Norwegian whaler called Augusta’s Minkie.
Cool adventure bud, surprised you never had any cod
Me to, when I’ve been up west in the past I’ve always had a few on soft plastics
Always hard when your in unknown territory bud🤷♂️
That's a Minkie Whale!
Porpoise are common in the western isles, inquisitive but weary and not show offs.
Just bought myself a new 2.3m sib with triple alloy flat deck with a yamaha 5hp 2 stroke motor, thinking of fishing Falmouth bay, but how far would you take a 2.3m, should I just stay in the estuary or would it be OK to go a little further. Will eventually get a bigger sib but just to get used to it at first I thought I'd get the smaller one just for now.
They are porpoise, they have a more curved & smaller fin than dolphins.
Harbour porpoise ? Seen them very occasionally in the Menai Straits. I read somewhere that they are preyed on by dolphins.
You need to keep bow low, if you catch a gust it will flip you over buddy.
Harbour porpoise
Hi mate. What action cam mount is that screwed to the transom?
Railblaza boom on a Railblaza mount bolted through transom. The mounts were originally for rod holders but with the boom it’s not a bad angle.
Do you think the seapro sib is too light bud?
No, it’s perfect for solo trips as I can just about carry it on the shoulder and a 9.8 gets it moving. There’s days when a bigger alu deck SIB comes in handy.
is Seapro better than Excell ? I think SeaPro its most marketing, word SEAPROO do job, + slogans BUILT for UK Waters....but Im onli sellers so such slogans dont work for me.......what is your opinion ? What about AquaMarina you used some times ago ? I need boat to use max 2 miles from the coastline. Please let me know
Hi daricis, I design the Seapro range, and I’m a fisherman and family guy, we have been tweaking them since 2006 to provide the best platform for your water adventures.
We offer 7 years warranty with every boat.
I’m not gonna be the one to say who’s best, but I can say they’re designed with love and care by a person who uses these boats day in and day out.
If you wanted to try a Seapro and didn’t like it - I would give you all your money back. 👍
@@highamsimon thank you for honest answer 👍 please send me link with offer for boat 3.5-3.8m but no too heavy
They are most likely porpoises
Oban they are pilot whales am sure
