Many thanks. Just wondering -- a question -- I just always assumed that Micky MacMahon (sp) played 1st trumpet, Lamar Holt played 2nd trumpet and Johnny Sell played 3rd trumpet. Am I correct in thinking that the person playing 1st trumpet is not necessarily the soloist? What things are considered in who is selected for solos? I assume that it not necessarily who plays the best? Rob
Hi Robert, Sorry for the delay in response.I take the view that the size of the score dictates the number of musicians in that section. Dont think the SOLOIST has to be the first number in the section. The Band Leader will inviite the SOLOIST according to ability, versability,desire and ambition not say that the other players in the section are lacking these qualities W ith regard to L. WELK, you will agree, all his performers are accomplished entertainers as a result of his own desire for perfection. Hope you can read into my personal feelings, (Could write a book)...
