    The Smothers Brothers Show wasa place to refuge durbng the Vietnam War. They would not compromise in their Freedom of Speech and it was wonderful to 18 and 19 year old me. They were canceled from CBS unjustly, but their message still resonates in my soul.

    "Very few forms of music that originated in this country" - except the Blues, Country & Western, Jazz and Rock-and-Roll....

    • @tgorski52
      @tgorski52 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Country and Western comes out of English folk. Blues, Jazz, Rock originate out of Slave music, same root as the Spiritual music they spoke of here. So they were on the money with that remark.

      i think they did an album called The Smothers Brothers Play It Straight.

    • @saminabinet
      @saminabinet ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jcfan1979 from The Two Sides Of The Smothers Brothers. Wasn't into side two as a kid, but The Four Winds And The Seven Seas and Sailor's Lament grew on me. Thought the line "sea birds dance along the foam" was a reference to Olongapo (Subic Bay, Philippine Islands) where i lived at the time. (And much later learnt that they lived there a bit when they were kids too!) There's other songs played straight scattered throughout their albums, often after hilarious introductions. iirc: The Three Song, Long Time Blues, Down In The Valley, I Never Will Marry (watch out for that one, if Tommy starts a recitif, you're looking for the other version!), and Black Is The Color Of My Love's True Hair - no, it's Black Is The Color Of My Hair's True Love - no... Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair. That's the one. I think.

      @Elizabeth Beckman Hello Elizabeth. I thought your comment was kind of funny because in 1966, I was 12 years old. I remember when that album came out, which is why I made the post. Unfortunately, vinyl albums in those days were very expensive. You usually put your money toward 45s instead. Thanks for the post, though. I'm actually thinking of buying the vinyl album,. I still have a record player to play it on, so maybe I'll finally get to buy the album I couldn't buy all those years ago.😊

      That is simply a misinformed statement, or it seems. These guys were consistently kicking the man in the nuts, and in those days this stuff was important. Many fought and died in a war where many spoke out, and unfortunately far too many were killed on our own soil. And I also enjoy their song renditions. I also love Riverside, Porcupine Tree, and Mason Williams, who was the head writer for SB for a season, during which he introduced his hit song, "Classical Gas." Other writers include Steve Martin, Rob Reiner, and Albert Brooks. Perhaps you might consider taking a new look with the understanding of the times.
