  • Brendan Gleeson is a priest... a truly good man who has had his life threatened in response to abuse suffered by a parishioner who claims to have been abused. This taut, intimate drama, written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, who previously collaborated with Gleeson on The Guard, is the rarity, a great serious summer film. The duo spoke to David Poland about the film and their work.

I'm long due for a re-watch on 'Calvary' - remember being very impressed back when I experienced it. Absolutely love Brendan Gleeson, I wish he'd get more leading roles in auteur-driven films since he strongly carries whatever material he's dealing with.

"Are you conscious of you?". Great interview. You can see the multiverse map out before his response.

Just want to chime in - your interviews are brilliant, have been watching them for a long while. Actual conversation, fantastic questions. Loved 'Calvary' too - keep up the great work!

Great interview with interesting insight into a film I adored. I get what you meant by the "absolutism" of the film's world. It felt like everything just proceeded to its logical conclusion. Everything had a payoff, nothing was wasted. It reminded me of some Coen Brothers films. Gleeson's character reminded me of Tommy Lee Jones' character from "No Country for Old Men".

Yeah great interview and so nice to have an insight into this brilliant movie from the Director and Actor , themselves. All this while , i have been looking & searching for a book /movie to address these issues that I have had to grapple with the whole of my adult life. This movie really did it for me. Brendon / John really put it well at @ 14.00. Oh and there's also the beautiful scenes / shots of Ireland ( i think). Really pretty.

The conversation about On-Demand vs. Theater was quite interesting. I watched "Under the Skin" a few months back in two different theaters, and it was amazing how different the experience was depending on the communal reaction of the audience to particular scenes. It genuinely affects how you interpret and remember a film.

Guys, for us non english speakers - what British director did John mention at 23:25? Can't catch the name. Thanks!
And my highest respect for the both interviewees. Brendan Gleeson is my favorite actor, the man’s just absolutely brilliant) So hoping for a new movie with him from any of McDonagh brothers, oh)
The “Calvary” was on my mind for days after I watched it, the movie is clear, but non-linear. It was very interesting to hear the creators talk so freely about it. Good interview.

Brendan your depection of father was meaningful what other actor could use 5 to 10 seconds of screen time to create unwritten dialogue like a restaurant entree that is basically mac n cheese but tastes like pasta primavera with the best ever ingredients
