Sure, I can answer this. Some good skills to start with.
1. You need a basic understanding of electronics. I would start with 555 timer and a breadboard if you want to practice the basics.
2. You need to be comfortable with CLI and understand the basics of programming. BASIC is a good language for total beginners.
3. You need a depraved and sadistic attitude towards you fellow human beings. A healthy sense of apathy will make it alot easier to justify why you need to spy on everyone.
