  • For most of us, the internet is virtual, made of Instagram posts, emails and TH-cam videos. And, access to the vital utility isn’t guaranteed across the world. Glad You Asked host Cleo Abram wants to know: What is the internet actually made of? And, how does it work? Answering that question involves discovering how internet cables are laid in the sea, if 5G is really the future, and how balloons in the stratosphere are helping people connect.

    Been in IT for 20 years now (I specialize in cloud-based "stuff" now) and I love to see it broken down in such a simple way. I think this was a job well done. My mom, at 80 got the concept of "how does it get to you so fast?". I also showed her a light pulse through a fibre optic cable - actually I used the fibre on my compound bow sight - and sent her the word "hello" through binary. It's all pretty amazing when we step back and think about it. It's robust but yet so delicate.

    I've been offering free fiberoptic internet to people in Germany for three years now and the main issue is that most people don't know anything about how the internet works and mostly don't even care about massive technological improvements in infrastructure as long as the running system somewhat works. I am so excited for more fiber, 5G and Starlink and hope people will have more informed judgment in the future. Thanks to everyone who helps building the infrastructure. Our contribution will be forgotten just as quickly as we forgot the names of those who built the highways we drive on every day, but this is for the greater good of the centuries and generation to come. Kids of the future, reach for the stars. You have the whole world to connect with.

Because I did not know that is how the internet got there. I remember telling my very savvy friends about it and even they did not know that there were literal, physical, lines on the ocean floor that were providing the internet. As a network engineer, It's nice to see this explained in more "layman terms". However, all the information in this video is just a fragment of what goes on with your internet traffic. In every ISP, major corporation, and sometimes small business there are teams of us that maintain and improve your network connectivity. We're arguably the most important team in any company, yet we sit in the background. We're often working when the business is closed, we're the ones that get called at 3 am when there's a major outage, or malicious attack was detected by the security systems we put in place.... But I still love my job!

    My dad was always into new tech, even tho we were poor. Back in the 80s he bought a camcorder (my grandmother got it for him using a credit card). It was $2,000. We were dirt poor back then, yet now in 2022 I have videos of myself as a child, videos of me and my grandparents, my cousins, aunties, etc. i cherish those memories. He did the same thing when CD players became the thing, then with DVDs. Even tho we were poor, we had those devices years before they became affordable for our friends and family. And in 1997 he bought a Compaq computer. I was 11 years old. And my life was forever changed. I was there at the forefront of Napster, i used MSN messenger almost like the old school social media, yahoo chat rooms were all the buzz, and the MSN game chat rooms were also popular. I remember when we had an internet game where u had to help Austin Powers get his mojo back, we had QuePasa for those of us who were Latino. BlackPlanet. Then later MySpace. I have lived inside the internet since the moment i got access to it in 1997 and i never looked back. Even met my husband (almost 15 years together now) online.

    • @andrewpaulhart
      @andrewpaulhart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not really, the cloud refers to the services that are available via the internet, not just the connections that they talked about. The same thing as the “world wide web”. Except people use “the cloud” to differentiate heavy duty services like access to things that were traditionally only available on your local computer . Like word processing, accounting packages, databases, Etc

      Jason Weaver I do exactly the opposite. I store all my important information with spideroak which encrypts all my information so no one ... not even their administrators can unencrypted it or snoop on it while it is being transferred. It stores versions of files so if I have overwritten something by mistake I can get the old version back, and the files are duplicated across multiple data centres so even an earthquake won’t destroy it. Compare that to a local computer or hard drive where you are one corrupted hard drive or house fire away from
      Losing it all.

    • @shoubhikrc
      @shoubhikrc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cloud is basically hosting your data on multiple servers instead of one, so when one server goes down, your data remains safe and still accessible. In simple terms, whatever data you save on the primary server, there are multiple clones of the same data saved in multiple servers in various geophysical locations.

    I've just seen this documentary and I have to say, like somebody who knows NOTHING about engineering (is that the word? sorry, I'm not native speaker), that Im really really IMPRESSED about this. I thought that.. I don't know, but this is really amazing. Now I know how this everyday thing works and I feel really nerd about it haha
