Hi, and thanks for the review :)! I have been thinking of buying this PC for a while now. One quick question, you said this is a bit louder than the Acer Swift 3 in "heavy" load but how is it in idle mode? I don't think you mentioned it in this review. I mean when surfing the web, watching series/movies and so on (not gaming).

The games you tested are using the smaller gpu internal to the cpu.
You needed to turn on performance mode on the laptops so it will use the dedicated GPU.
You could have gotten 2 to 3 times the performance.
That goes for most of your Zen2 laptops with dedicated GPUs.

Will speak for every viewer/consumer, giving you a huge THANK YOU!!!!! Of the hundreds of channels I've watched & now looked into.. you are ONE of less than I can count on one hand, unfortunately.... who actually does what is legally required to protect your viewers/consumers! For being what has become rare gems, rather than the norm... as far as living w/ integrity goes.. So, thank you for doing what everyone should be doing... Fully + properly disclosing what, where & how you should, when showing & talking about products. Your transparency is greatly appreciated! I wish more would follow your lead. As is, they are taking advantage of the very people they should be most loyal to & transparent with, imho. The viewers & consumers, who... in # & without, they wouldn't even have these opportunites; nor continue to. Sad & kind of a slap to the face to be deceived, lied to & taken advantage of.... just so they can better line their own pockets while trying to seem & present as genuine, not influenced in any way... content. They think viewers have an issue w/ sponsored content. NO.... we have an issue w/ sponsored content, free products, paid mentions, pre-approved reviews, affiliate/referral links, bias & connections to..... that aren't disclosed as such. Thanks again... for your honesty & for sharing your thoughts & opinions so WE can make better purchasing decisions. :) Stay safe & be well.

I use this laptop regularly for work in Photoshop and Illustrator and it performs great! I've never encountered any problem while working in PS or doing illustrations.
Good thing to know is that the display is only around 60% sRGB, so the colours aren't that accurate.
As far as editing goes, I haven't tried it out as much yet, but from what I've tried it is definitely able to handle 1080p edit & render. Higher res. videos would most likely drop quite a bit of frames, but I think that's expected, considering the price of the laptop and it's components.

I'm fairly interested in the new redmi book 16 with the Ryzen H series processor. Being such a thin laptop, I find it interesting that they went with the full power 45w H series chips instead of the U series like the one found here. It seems like the screen could be pretty great for content creation or photo editing as well considering it's wide color gamut. You should do a review on it! Very few of the bigger tech channels cover the full spectrum of Chinese laptops unfortunately so it'd be nice to see a comprehensive reviewer like yourself do their take on one as unique as the redmi book 16!

That goes for most of your Zen2 laptops with dedicated GPUs.

The extra performance over Acer Swift 3 is due to 16GB memory compared to the 8gb in Acer. Unlike the Ryzen 3000 series which reserve fix amount memory from the Ram all the time, I noticed that these 4000 series initially reserve 512MB and that gets dynamically increased based on the Workload. You can see that in AMD Adrenaline driver that 512MB is reserved. My IdeaPad 5 was allocating over 3GB while running Withcher 3 since it has 16GB memory and it would be lower in Acer Swift 3 as it has only 8gb ram. Also, Lenovo let's the APU use up to 25W for longer duration when connected to power and that's another contributing factor as it allows both cpu and gpu to boost for longer duration.

Extra performance on Lenovo is mostly from limited sustained power limit (18W) on Acer 4700U, which is not enough for it to boost both CPU and iGPU, and also- from DDR4 3200 RAM which has lower latencies, than LPDDR4 3200 used in that Acer model.

Very good review as usual. I wonder how is the thermal management in comparison with an intel chip equivalent. AMD cpus prior this generation of Rayzen had a reputation of running really hot. Are they still running hotter than intel cpus? Taking into consideration such a good performance of rayzen chips, at a lower price than equivalent intels, if the thermal management is similar... I may shift to AMD the next time.

    • @railshot888

Ryzen 4000 series runs much cooler than comparable Intel far more superior in efficiency. There's literally zero reason to get an Intel laptop unless you are buying something outside the processor itself like Intel one has the color you want that's not offered on AMD ones or certain Intel only GPu options that has nothing to do with the cpu itself.

I bought about 20 of these in the last year and a half. I believe I had to warranty 6 of them. Won't turn on, USB breaks, won't charge, screen shattering because of how the camera is misaligned, etc. There was another with a HD that died but I swapped that out myself. Thing is, everyone likes these. They run well, but make 100% sure that you keep the warranty live.

Unless in battery saver mode the fan on this thing fires up intermittently and loudly, almost whistling. On charge the thing whines constantly. If you Google this it seems I am not alone with this Lenovo driven problem. Loved the fit and finish and speed of the Ryzen 5 but if I wanted to live next door to a major airport I might not be bothered by the sound of this thing being drowned out! It got returned and I suggest you try one out in a store before you buy. Hope this helps y'all.

I really appreciate your detailed and thorough reviews. I need your advise, I recently purchased a ThinkPad L14 with AMD Ryzen 5 PRO
4650U, 8GB DDR4-3200, 256GB M.2 SSD, 45Wh battery, Multitouch 300 nits IPS Display and I paid $740, the laptop will be mainly used by my 10 years old son for his online studies. But after I saw this review, I was thinking of switching to Lenovo Flex 5 with AMD Ryzen 4500U, 16GB DDR4-3200, 256GB M.2 SSD and a pen and it will be cheaper than the L14 by about $100. Do you recommend staying with the L14 or switch to Flex 5? Practicality and durability is very important.

Basically it's a failure as a 2-in-1 because the keyboard speaker placement means rear firing sound in tablet and tent mode so it's easy to muffle the read sound if you place it on your lap, for instance. Or are there still smaller slits on the bottom that allow the sound to fire forward when in tablet and tent mode?
