      Wish they selected the SMT models. power consumption is not that much different and I'm sure people will be happy to pay a bit more for double the thread count. non SMT models shouldn't even be a thing now.

      @@the80386 SMT is useful only if you do actual heavy work on a laptop- but for simple media consumption 6c/6t is more than enough. And for games- the bottleneck is on the iGPU anyways. So for most users- no SMT CPUs are just fine, even if planning to use the laptop for ~5 years. In that sense- picking 16GB of (soldered) RAM is more important.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Got this for my mom, build quality is great for the materials used, Lenovo really knows their stuff with materials. Feels like a much more expensive, Al/Mg chassis than it is. Performance for what most moms use it - awesome and it does well in more demanding stuff too. Sticking to Lenovo these days is not too hard, owning several ThinkPads has taught me that.

    • @NeblogaiLT
      @NeblogaiLT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@firasco There are some differences- different RAM/bandwidth (performance difference needs to be tested), Slim7 pushes a bit more power, has (an option?) of a brighter screen, and is a bit more high-end in price and build. What I liked in Lenovo slides- they say it supports freesync- if true, that would be really nice to have.

    I have found Lisa's comments about fan noise not to be the case for me. Unless in battery saver mode the fan on this thing fires up intermittently and loudly, almost whistling. On charge the thing whines constantly. If you Google this it seems I am not alone with this Lenovo driven problem. Loved the fit and finish and speed of the Ryzen 5 but if I wanted to live next door to a major airport I might not be bothered by the sound of this thing being drowned out! It got returned and I suggest you try one out in a store before you buy. Hope this helps y'all.

    Hi Lisa, I love your reviews! Very informative and fun always! Now, let me share my ideapad story: I bought recently an AMD Ideapad 5 from Lenovo UK, not the Flex version. I got the Ryzen 7 4800u version with 16GB of RAM. Whats not to love about it, hun?? Well. Ideapad keyboard was a big issue for me! I bought it to replace my T430, and gave up (returned it) after a couple of days. The ideapad 5 keyboard was a deal-breaker! It does not compare to the Thinkpad experience! Besides, I missed not having a TrackPoint on the Ideapad!

      @@Honza90 Hi John, I don't know if the Flex Lisa demonstrates is available in the UK/Ireland with another name. The one I bought (& later renturned) is the ideapad 5-15ARE05 Laptop (pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/5-series/ideapad-5-15are05), without the pen/touch screen

    • @Honza90

      @@abruni83 Ok cheers Antonio! I've just had a look at the Irish Lenovo site seems to be called an Ideapad 5 (no sign of a touch pen though) www.lenovo.com/ie/en/laptops/ideapad/s-series/IdeaPad-5-14ARE05/p/88IPS501392
      I'll hold old and keep having a look I want to replace my beloved Flex 2 and quite like the one Lisa reviewed here!

    • @Fishing_for_Fishies
      @Fishing_for_Fishies 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Honza90 Hey, the 14 inch variant (the one you've linked) does not have a touch screen so yeah no pen. You can find touch-capability in the 15 inch variant (has slightly better thermals and louder speakers too from what I've seen in reviews).
      The 14 inch variant is probably going to be my next machine very very soon (upgrading from an overheating surface pro 4).
      It's unfortunate that the Ideapad 5 doesn't have 2 in 1 functionality, but the pure value for performance is super convincing for me. If I do end up needing touch, I can get a small drawing tablet and still have change left over in comparison to getting the flex 5 (at least in my area (Australia). Alot of drawing tablets are also capable of just being a secondary screen too, so that's a plus.
      So if you do decide to get it, you should get it quick. It's been unexpectedly popular (the AMD variant), and Lenovo is struggling to meet supply for demand.

      Screen is far superior and build is metallic.
      It's also expensive model any model ds or ez with 16GB 512GB NVMe and 4500U costs well above 850$ on hp.com

    Lisa Gade's reviews are top notch. No B.S., concise and coherent. And what other reviewer pops the back off to show you the guts?
    Question: Coil whine was noted. Is the noise transmitted through the speakers themselves or is it from the electronics?

    I still don't get why they don't all come with 2 nvme slots.... even if they have to share PCI-E lanes or something or even if one is really only SATA.
    With 4bit-MLC NAND Flash becoming more common it just makes a lot more sense to have 2, that way you can have a 4bit drive for storage and a 2bit of 3bit drive for the OS and work.

    The non-upgradeable RAM is a real bummer, so definitely opt for 16 GB.
    Bummer about the display as well. I guess I should just hook it up to my Dell P2415Q monitor for color-accurate work.
    Nevertheless, this is very tempting. I might have to pick one up and see how it handles DaVinci Resolve.
    The real selling point for me: the full-size SD card slot! :D No more attaching a dongle just to pull photos off my camera.
