Thank you Glad you enjoyed watching some of what goes on during the time the locomotive is being turned round. I am sure a lot think the crew have a nice rest but as you see this day there was more to just turning the engine with the table locking pins jammed solid.
Working through their retirement most of those guys. Good to see, they are obviously skilled and enjoy helping West Coast. H&S would have a fit seeing that guy struggle with the turntable brake though, got to be in his 80's surely! Bless him.
Yes they are all getting on in years but keeping fit and healthy. The guy struggling to unlock the turntable, they have bolts locomen call pins to stop them moving out of line, is Chris Cubitt who drove steam on BR, I was told by someone who knows him better than me he is 78, he is a great guy and drives on the NYMR always willing to let youngsters see in the cab of his Lambton tank locomotive 29.
IN the 1960s british railways scrapped thousands of steam locomotives selling them off for anywhere between £2000 to £4000 I wonder if their short-sightedness has been avenged when they see they value of todays restored locomotives In the meanwhile they continue to build diesels at fibve times the cost that only last 10---15 years No wonder they are inefficient and now the push for women only carriages for muslim women
It does make you wonder if we were right to get rid of steam so quickly Some locomotives were only 5 to 10 years old when scrapped, built to last until the 70's and could easily of been used into the 80's. The actual steam engine is more efficient than a diesel or petrol engine very comparable to an electric machine, it is the way the water is heated that makes them less efficient. Today experiments are being carried out with other fuel instead of coal, these have been less efficient not burning as hot but cause less pollution. These locomotives were built to last and steam is quite simple really. modern locomotives and units have a huge amount of electronic systems to go wrong and as you say cost many times more times to build for a shorter life span. I have not heard of the Muslim women only, that's like going back to the old days of ladies only compartments, so much for an integrated society we are supposed to live in.
Very enjoyable. Love seeing the *behind the scenes* moments, and unintentional comedy of the turntable being a bit stuck.
