My memory of class 50's was at Carlisle station when they were nearly new 400s in the 70s. Pairs of them tearing out of Carlisle Citadel with West Coast Main Line passenger trains, great value as you spotted two 400s for every service and for me much more exciting than the "boring" Deltics on the ECML at home in Darlington.
That's a great memory to have, thanks for sharing. As much as I like them later in life in large logo and NSE liveries, there's something I prefer about the early days prior to naming, exactly as you say.
That's a sound that takes me back to my days as a spotter back in the mid to late 70's in the south-west. Saturdays spent on Plymouth's North Road Station or at Laira depot with a bottle of coke and a packet of Jaffa cakes.
hi, great video.perhaps these engines need to be fitted with Pre heat so its an easier start, does the cl 66 have them ?thank goodness they are looked after well.
I doubt 66s have preheaters. The usual solution on locomotives these days seems to be auto-starting the engine every now and again to stop it getting too cold.
Thank you. The team that helps to restore and maintain the class 50s is actually going through the process of fitting preheating to a couple of the locos with a view to retrofitting them all in due course. I'm actually not sure about 66s, I know they used to just leave the locos on tick over to keep them warm through winter.
Yes, they’re amazing and I’m so glad to be able to see them regularly. The team that helps to restore and maintain the class 50s is actually going through the process of fitting preheating to a couple of the locos with a view to retrofitting them all in due course.
Thi is indeed a glorious site, glorious unburnt diesel yes yes yes

1:00 Big mainline diesel tries harder to start, after seeing the little track machine come past.

Great story, I'd love to be able to go back to the whole class in service at full chat.
Just got to love English Electric diesels!
Great video. But I do feel for the starter motor and batteries!!! That was hard work!!!
Thanks. Just a bit 😂
I think their pneumatic starter motors not electric
Great scene and sounds but didn't you have all those under tarpaulin last month. DOH ❄️🥶❄️
Splendid
Give it some welly, Grommit!

Crikey, these older diesels really require decent preheaters. Better for the loco, better for the environment.
What a glorious sounding engine though!

Sooner all the 50s in the care of the C50A get fitted with pre-heaters the bette4
Assume this was a while back? Last winter?
You're right, it was December 2020.
Nice one, the GBRF livery gave it away!
Good vid, could have been taken this week with all the snow.
So, her name is "Glorious",huh? Gloriously smoky!!
Stop me before I pun again!
At least they didn't start her indoors like those idiots at Bo'ness!
