Thanks for the Hong Kong Kai Tak archive upload. Visited this iconic airport back in the late 90s. Its hard to believe aviation icons such as the 747 and Kai Tak are now a part of aviation history. Once in a lifetime unforgettable experience for this avgeek and its checkboard approach. Truly thumbs up for Kai Tak and the vital role it played for Hong Kong before Chek Lap Kok.

@Ben Chuft , First of all, I never said nor implied that. Secondly, I'm French descent. Thirdly, the Brits did in fact do a lot of great things before anyone else. Example, it was the Brits who taught the Japanese how to manufacture automobiles for the first time. That's why the Japanese drive on the same side of the road as they do. Also, it was the Brits who invented commercial jet travel, not Americans. In the field of jet engines, it is debatable who invented these first. The Brits or the Germans? But one thing's sure, the Brits had the best and most durable technology, just ask the Russians who went out of their way to steal it. Furthermore, the Americans obtained this technology from them as well. Of course, there are many more fine examples, too numerous really.
I am a 11 year old aviation lover! That was awesome! I actually got to fly on a Northwest 747 1 year before Northwest started flying under the name Delta.
I worked as a skycap in MSP for Northwest and later Delta for 26 years between 1985 and 2011.That Northwest 747-400 was such a beautiful aircraft. It was probably one of those that used to operate nonstop between MSP and HKK at that time.
Landon, in overtime a joyful yuletide and a pleasant New year marking:) There are many who wish that Kai tak still was in service, I myself am not an exception. The thing is that as of the time for the Great Britain's handover to China, they had to pay an extra amount for getting rid of Kai tak. That said it had to be built a new airport, in order to compete with other cities. The new airport, the Chek lap kok, introduced her services during 1998.
The ultimate urban airport experience period.- Fantastic video 😮 its ‘90s travel vibe gives me the goosebumps, simply love it! Sad though never flew to KaiTak only to HKG International, Hong Kong is still an amazing must-visit place ❤
9:20 the type of tail livery that BA should be getting back on its aircraft. You would just confused that new BA design with Oriental Thai Airlines. Btw, I remembered the entrance fee was $0.50 - $1 to go onto the observation deck in Kai Tak Airport.
Well, I don't remember much about the iconic Kai tak airport... But it just looks like history!! ❤ I can picture all those people coming and going, And now nothing.

Terrible location for an airport + prime area for residential and commercial development + not cost effective to have keep this airport open while you're paying for the construction of Chep Lap Kok. Bangkok's metropolitan area has a much larger population than Hong Kong SAR, plus Hong Kong is already close to other airports (Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzhen).
Hi X-Spot Aviation Great video and lovely footage! I'm making a video about Kai Tak and would love to feature your content in the video. Would it be OK if I used some of your content? Of course, I would be giving you full credit of the footage that I decide to use :)
That is a Nepal Airlines previously Royal Nepal Airlines Boeing 757-200M combi parked behind China Airlines alongside Dragon Air :) wohoo Nepal Airlines at Kai Tak airport, would have loved to see the 757 doing a checkerboard approach there to land :)
How this airport remained open for so long is a miracle in itself
No alternative except a monumentally difficult and expensive construction I guess
Look up Lukla airport
This was very much a symbol of Hong Kong.
Those 747s are music to my ears.
Same❤
Kai Tak airport was retired 20 years ago. Wish I could turn back 20 years.
You and me both. What would you do different?
Nah, I wish it DIDN'T retire and I could watch A380s, A350s, and 787 land at Kai Tak
Good old days
9:05 my favourite British Airways livery

Experienced Kai Tak in 1994.Never forget!
The golden days! So miss the HKG-UK partnership. 😉😭

Without doubt, the most exotic international airport ever built (by the British).

Many thanks! That sounds great 👍🛫
Im 12 and im an avgeek
You never forget your first landing approach in to Hong Kong Kai Tak, nor any other flight in or out; I certainly haven't :)
I love the fact the 747 and a330 are the planes that landed here the most

Wow. So many 747s in one airport.
Worked in HK, at Stonecutters island. I remember the planes passing overhead with undercarriage down and on finals. Interesting...

Amazing piece of history!
Thanks
Amazing piece of life😊 Greetings from Frankfurt, Germany
Fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
I love how majestic the queen of the skies is when she effortlessly flies towards the tarmac whilst avoiding the tops of apartment buildings
Almost wish this place still existed

Don't think I've ever seen this perspective before. Nice.
Thanks!
Must've been so exciting not knowing what plane would come would come around the corner because they didnt have flight trackers
Thanks for sharing vdo
My most memorable flight--Seattle to Kai-Tak on NW 747, May 1996.
9:20 the type of tail livery that BA should be getting back on its aircraft. You would just confused that new BA design with Oriental Thai Airlines.
Btw, I remembered the entrance fee was $0.50 - $1 to go onto the observation deck in Kai Tak Airport.
Very nice! Cool, classic planes , too!!
Thanks, much appreciated!
Cool old kai tak spotting
Thanks mate, glad you like it!

Safer than crossing the road.
Memories, including the KMB “hot dog” double deck buses.
Well, I don't remember much about the iconic Kai tak airport... But it just looks like history!! ❤ I can picture all those people coming and going, And now nothing.
Absolutely insane!
Where did these Northwest jumbos fly to from here?
Eramuy peligroso en du tiempo pero tenia una vista muy espectacular
I think this historic airport should have stay as a private airport or airbase?
Cathay shoulda taken out the mother of all loans to buy it as their own airport 🤣
5:10 a B777 in 1998?
I flew on one around that time. I remember being disappointed it wasn't a 747.
The 777 was from the early nineties. I think... I am 11
The 777 was lauched in 1990 and started flying 1995 and im just a 12 yr old
Emirates had 777 300s back then already I think. OG non ER 300s
I just knew some Cathay Pacific 777 ER here are still operating up until now.
6:10 A310?
3:46 what jet ? Looks kinda il-96
A340

MUITO SHOW!!!
Why did they boo/groan when the british airways came into land?
It was the year after they became an independent nation released from control under Britain, maybe that had an affect.
coz they shit airline lol and had something to do with the take over probally
Hong Kong didn't become an Independent Nation. It became part of China.
LOL we wanna become an independent nation too, we're now a part of china
10:42 what airline?
China southwest
JLClips China Southwest Airlines
Back when there was no such thing as a go around
Why couldn't they leave this airport open albeit with domestic flights like Don Mueang?

@@joeb5080 for someone in the city it was certainly a better location for an airport than an island a dozen miles away
@@ScapoloMichael of course. But the cons of that location for an airport far outweigh the pros.
Does it operate on night or not
Every airport operates every second.
Operates as a cruise terminal lmao
At that times Kai Tak airport closed at night .
very nice.
Fun fact over 1000 747s alone as landed at Kai Tak
