    Never ceases to amaze me how the landing gear doesn’t just collapse on impacting the tarmac.. and it can handle it thousands of times. Incredible.

    Every time I get on a plane I say, the tray table behind should have a screen that projects a dash cam so we can see the plane land from the cock pit. I was once lucky enough to sit in cock pit of a Lear jet and the take off and landing was spectacular. My father had a plane and loved that too.

    landing in Hong Kong these days is child's play. Before 1998, on the only Kai Tak track, certification was required. In the NW > SW direction we skimmed the roofs of the buildings at 800 feet, and if the sea was rough the runway was under the spray

    • @frankturlough1381

      There was a square painted on a big rock as you approached Kai Tak and the idea was to count to three when you saw the square and then turn right. Flying past people's windows on the approach was a hoot!
      Occasionally planes would not brake in time and end up in the water.

    This may be a stupid question, but why do the screens in the cockpit flicker constantly?

    • @shakir1998
      @shakir1998 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      cameras fault

    • @LeskiStation
      @LeskiStation 9 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      alextotoalextoto not really a stupid question. the answer is fairly simple though. CRT monitors refresh their screens about 72Hz, which means 72 times a second the screen is basically erased and redrawn. This happens faster than your eye can see. A typical handheld camera usually records at about 24FPS or 24Hz, they also use rolling shutters which means that as the shutter passes over the CRT monitor, the monitor is erasing and redrawing it's screen. These two things combined mean that the camera is making it look the screens are flickering, they are not actually flickering in the cockpit.
      tl;dr just an artifact of the camera, screens aren't actually flickering.

    This are GREAT pilots, but what's going on with the Maintenance/Avionics department: the instruments and the Avionics of this Aircraft is terrible. The Maintenance department is hopelessly not helping this pilots the flying instruments of this Aircraft is terrible and I'm really sure that unstable instruments will hurt this pilots during the flight, can anyone imagine if this pilots are in the severe storm weather with a hopeless instruments behavior.
    Great approach and touched down Skipper and my regards to the First Officer, I'm proud of you Guys. So Maintenance department do your job and stop putting the pilots on unnecessary danger of their vision, safety of the Aircraft operations and the crew will help the crew for safety of the passengers.

    As challenging as any landing is, this was a piece of cake compared to the old Kai Tak Hong Kong airport approach and landing. You literally had to point the aircraft at a 'chequerboard' - painted red and white squares on a rocky outcrop, just before impact, make a hard right turn and if you've got it right the runway will appear right in front! Managed to do this successfully a few times on Flight Sim 74-4 but when you get it wrong it's wrong spectacularly; go around, crash or in the sea the only options.

    • @arashkhoshghadamnia376
      @arashkhoshghadamnia376 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it flashes because of refresh rate of displsys and the rolling shutter of camera. the rolling shutter of camera eliminates some of the frames thus causing the flickering rolling effect of the displays and old computer monitors as well as 60 Hz and 50 Hz. the higher refresh rates are displayed with less flickering when shot with the cameras equipped with rolling shutter.

    wow ,130 knots speed? is not low?

    • @LeskiStation
      @LeskiStation 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** 140* kts is a pretty typical landing speed for a 747-400. Approach speed is anywhere from (recalling from memory here) 165 to 121 kts. Varies a lot depending on payload, fuel remaining and weather conditions. (also 140kts is about 160 mph or 260kph)

    Why is the captain moving the yoke too much? Isn't the aircraft on autopilot?

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Arch Vile - The "whoop, whoop, whoop" sound at 01:14 is the autopilot disengage sound. From there, he flew manually.

    • @archvile1313
      @archvile1313 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +corisco tupi Ah, I forgot about that, yes that was the autopilot being disengage. I thought pilots keep flying the plane on autopilot till they are about 1000 feet above runway.

    • @brians7757
      @brians7757 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Arch Vile master autopilot was turned off and was switched to heading hold at that point for just a few seconds. The First Officer turns the autopilot back on shortly after.

    • @brians7757
      @brians7757 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +corisco tupi It was an ILS approach he did not fly manually until the very end.

    what are the mechanical sounds when touching down?
    wheels locking in place?

    • @MauriOTB
      @MauriOTB 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Its the spoiler deployment on the wing, The gear is locked in the air wouldn't be very safe otherwise.
      The spoiler is set on armed before landing and deploys when the wheels touch the runway.

    The 400 came out in the mid-70s, at least that was when I first flew on one. The cockpit instruments had to have upgraded at least twice, right? What a great improvement over the classic 100, 200. Thanks for the video
